Socceroos scored 3 from 7 shots. Let’s hope we can retain that. I am concerned about how many chances we offer other teams, need to minimise, the midfield needs to work smarter. Our inability to retain possession is the most frustrating. I cannot see Argentina bothering to cross the way Denmark did, easy stuff for our central defence. Their short passing and clinical finishing requires us to work hard and close the space then we hope they get frustrated and we counter. Cannot do what the Poles did and just concede the game to them. 

Just waiting for the worldwide media to erupt when they see the Grey Wiggle in goal during penalties.

I keep thinking 0-5, though that’s probably just paranoia. Surely they’ll be satisfied with 3 and take the foot off. I try to fantasise about Australia win but I just can’t see any way.  

With 2006 and the quality of the players we had then and the way we played against Italy, the Italy loss was seen as a tragedy, a what-if moment. A moment of trauma that angers and haunts us to this day. 

The history between Argentina (Sth American football) and Australia is amazing and some of the local newspapers are really embracing the history. 

Clarin wrote a great article about the history of Arg V Aus by recapping the '93 playoffs, 1988 4-1 friendly win with that Yankos free-kick, quotes from Paul Wade etc. Really great stuff.

We have a really low percentage of getting a win but I would relish the experience of playing in a second round match which we haven't done since 2006 with the GG and so hope it inspires the next generation to take the mantle and take us into the next level because we are quite their yet compared to more establish football powerhouses like Argentina.
Plus we will be so tired, the lack of options of the bench is a problem so if we have to throw in youth like Kuol and Tilio who are the future at least they can get some valuable experience going into 2026 but we don't have the depth compared to Argentina.

So I think this is where our journey will end sadly :(

Argentina play well on the ground but we've not been cracked through the middle on the ground just yet. I hope we attack and suffocate Argentina as this will hopefully extend their lines for some wayward passes to go out. A bit of rotation is needed purely on fitness grounds.

Like to see Baccus start along side maestro Mooy, as the two no.6's, with Irvine further up the pitch. Irvine He was impressive further up with his pressing in the second half during the Denmark match. McGree and Hrustic as options in the second half for this one.

The way Degenek has been in camp is absolutely exemplary. He's been really firing up the team and performed near perfectly on the pitch. Total redemption for the Asian Cup error.

I've got this bad feeling that Argentina is going to slaughter the Socceroos (I hope I'm wrong), but win lose or draw, the Socceroos have exceeded all expectations.

The Socceroos weren't even expected to qualify for the World Cup, but they did against the odds, and even after the miracle win against Peru, the Socceroos were not expected to score a goal, or win a game, but they have won 2 in a row against strong opposition (Tunisia and Denmark), and both with clean sheets. It was great how the Socceroos recovered after the France loss, to me that shows  that the Socceroos have character and maturity, and they know how to handle pressure.

I just think Messi and the powerhouse that is Argentina will be too strong for Australia, the only thing that could stuff up the Argentinians is if they take Australia too lightly/or they lose their cool if things don't go their way. In past Argentina v Germany WC games where the Germans won most of the time, the Germans were very good at getting underneath the Argentinians skin, but the Socceroos are no Germany.

If we lose, I hope the Socceroos make Argentina sweat for their win.

I doubt many would have predicted Socceroos going this far after reaping just 6 points from their last 7 matches in AFC qualifying and finishing a solitary point above Oman to reach AFC playoff against UAE - which they only won with an 84th minute goal. I thought they were no good things to get past UAE, let alone Peru. I've got to hand it to this squad for resilience. Amazing.

Our defence is stable, and confident, anyone bringing up the last 6 months doesn't recognise the main change in the last five games (our CBs), we can hold, we just need to score.
