+xIt   seems   inconceivable    to   me    that    all   clubs    were   not   informed  and/or   consulted   before   the     decision   was   made . Yet   none   spoke    out   in   the  media ,   until    after   the  announcement    and   after  it   all   hit   the   fan ? Its very "Frank Lowian" eh Paulie?

Also reading he will take the APL to court.   OHHHH better dump those Melbourne Victory shares lads..... The "mainstream mafioso" is taking head office to court.... hahahahahahahahah

+xhttps://melbournevictory.com.au/news/anthony-di-pietro-and-caroline-carnegie-address-apls-grand-final-decisionANTHONY DI PIETRO AND CAROLINE CARNEGIE ADDRESS APL’S GRAND FINAL DECISIONMelbourne Victory Football Club wishes to advise that on Monday, Chairman Anthony Di Pietro officially tendered his resignation as a Director of the Australian Professional Leagues with immediate effect. Di Pietro said he could no longer maintain his role as an APL Director and be able to freely advocate on behalf of Melbourne Victory. “It has become clear that in order for me to act in the best interests of Melbourne Victory and football in Victoria, I needed to resign as a board member of APL,” Di Pietro said. “My resignation was ultimately driven by the decision announced yesterday, that sees the next three Grand Finals being hosted in Sydney. “While I know first-hand the decision by APL was made with a view to growing the game and creating financial sustainability for the League, the fan and member sentiment has been overwhelming and I cannot support maintaining a decision which is not in the best interests of the loyal Melbourne Victory faithful and football. “As such, together with Caroline, we have urged APL to pause this plan and consider an alternative that supports the growth and stability of the League while also allowing both the Men’s and Women’s A-League Grand Finals to continue to be played in the city of the highest ranked qualifier.” Managing Director, Caroline Carnegie said we must work together to grow and unite football. “It is natural in this game for there to be tension between the competition regulator and Clubs on certain matters, and in such cases like this one, we will always stand with our members and fans, who are the lifeblood of our Club,” Carnegie said. “While the Chairman and I understand that the League has a need to challenge the status quo and drive funding into the sport, we must also prioritise outcomes that unite and bring football fans together. “We have a unique opportunity to capitalise on the growth of the game following the successful Socceroos campaign, and in the lead into the Women’s World Cup in Australia next year, and to do that we need the professional game to flourish, with fans at the core of our thinking. “Ultimately the Club must continue to work with the League on growing football in a progressive, sustainable and aligned manner and the Chairman and I will continue to urge the APL to revisit this deal and advocate an outcome that in this case delivers for our fans and the entire Victory family.” TLDR --- I signed off on this because APL need the money but due to the fan backlash I have resigned from APL board (Still making sure MV board is financial recipient of APL profits). Must make sure the value of the MV license is not affected in any way .....

+x+x+xIt’s gonna be a wild week   Its not already? It’s gonna get worse. I’m pretty fatigued with football. Between this, Qatar getting the World Cup/super league/champions league changes and World Cup expanding I’m thinking I might be better off following the hockey    Dont worry yourself too much about it my dude.... Par for the course in Australian soccer... Just get up for the ARG v CRO game tomorrow and FRA v MRC the day after.. watch the final on the weekend and then have a rest until the real season starts in Feb 2023 :)

+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+xWhat did Stephen Lowy say? 'Be careful what you wish for.' Damn right. I can't think of one decision from the APL that has benefited football other than themselves. But I guess, you know.........anything is better than Lowy. I guess the main benefit is the independence of the fa. A second division and eventual p and r is only possible with an independent fa We need to stop kidding ourselves. The APL will never EVER agree to P & R. They just won't. It ain't happening ever. The APL might try to resist it but they have no standing in FA.  They are a commercial and operational entity. The clubs, however, are members of FA and have the right to challenge the decision to implement P/R if/when the Board makes it. If I recall correctly the APL has the right to manage all professional leagues attached to FA and if/when the NSD became fully professional it would move under its umbrella.  If I am correct then this would be the appropriate time to introduce P/R. Yes the FA has final say but good luck with that when the APL dig their heels in. Give me one good reason the APL would think getting related is a good idea? (The APL not us.). We know why it would be good  Forget it, it's over. Having P/R would give the ALM more viewers/attendees with clubs in the relegation zone getting more interest as they struggle to survive and also more viewers from the clubs in the promotion zone in the NSD as they look to see what they might be involved in. No APL club will risk their $15 million license fee on possible relegation. None. You used to be cool.  You've changed, man. Against my better judgement and despite my gut feeling I always held out hope that what is good for the game would triumph over self interest. I was wrong.

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/dec/13/anthony-di-pietro-quits-as-apl-director-over-controversial-a-leagues-finals-deal-with-nswWestern United, who won their first ALM championship at AAMI Park in Melbourne last season, slammed the decision on Tuesday. “We do not support the A-League Men’s, A-League Women’s or the E-League grand finals being played in Sydney for the next three seasons,” United said in a statement. “Our club isn’t represented on the APL board, and we weren’t consulted on the decision announced yesterday. “While we are grateful to Destination NSW for wanting to support football financially and the APL’s efforts to increase its commercial revenue, the reaction of our fans over the last 24 hours speaks volumes. “Western United is a young club that is being built for the football fans in the west of Melbourne and Victoria. We strongly believe that they are entitled to attend a grand final in their home state should we be successful in earning the right to do so.”

It will not bother Apl/FA if the GF is half full if Glory ever got in there again. They will not budge, seriously.

I still don't get why the A-league has a Grandfinal. It's not Rugby league. In all the other big leagues the winner is the team with the most points at season end. Only FA Cup,German Pokal etc have a knock out phase that ends up being with semi finals and Final. But not regular league games. Why not have this for the Australia Cup instead of the A league?

Short season-finals extends the season 2. The season is not decided until the last game- compare with the big leagues where realistically its the same 2 and once every decade perhaps 4 that can win it.  Look at Germany Bayern 9 wins out of last 10 years. Boring and predictable. 3. Finals are played with higher intensity- exciting to watch 4. Australians like it-part of Australian culture and fans vote with their feet. No reason why we should copy Europe, where most title races exclude 90% of the teams..

If no money has been paid to date I wonder aloud how difficult to rescind the contract

DT made a big fuss when APl started that APL would be fan focused .... seems 99% of fans don't want this... lets see DT react

+x+x+xTo play devil's advocate and put on my marketing hat for a second. The reason people are mad is partly because something has been taken away from them, but also the bullshit approach the APL took of 'making a tradition'. It's dishonest and the fans can see right through it. If they had taken a different approach and said something along the lines of "Hey, the last few years have taken a toll and we need money. We have this deal which will be unpopular but will get us X dollars. After the 3 years we will guarantee the system will return to being highest ranked gets to host the GF, we assure you this is a temporary situation.". People would have still been mad, but the blowback would have been tempered and possibly more manageable. Far less damage would have been done. Don't get me wrong, I still would have been angry and disappointed, but it wouldn't feel like they were taking the piss. I think the worst part is consulting with the various fan focus groups before hand…  hearing overwhelming feedback that the move is fucked… and then deciding to ignore the fans and proceed with said fucked move.. and then publicly gloating about how you consulted with the fans… I find it very difficult to believe that people internal at the APL didn't see this coming. Someone must have said this is a bad idea. I'm guessing numerous times. I also can't imagine any so-called fan groups saying this would be a good idea. This whole thing reeks of one person steamrolling their plan through regardless of what all the people around them are saying. But I thought only Frank Lowy steam rolled his plans? LOL

+xI still don't get why the A-league has a Grandfinal. It's not Rugby league. In all the other big leagues the winner is the team with the most points at season end. Only FA Cup,German Pokal etc have a knock out phase that ends up being with semi finals and Final. But not regular league games. Why not have this for the Australia Cup instead of the A league? Q: I still don't get why the A-league has a Grandfinal. A: Because its commercial sane. Without finals the A league would die a fast death because clubs would be eliminated from contention 1/3 through the season and have fans no motive to give their hard earned dollar towards watching dead rubbers for the rest of the season. Q: It's not Rugby league. A: That is correct. But finals is not strictly a RL concept. In fact most sports have finals. Even in many countries with strong football heritage, such as Uruguay and Colombia, finals are an important tradition in their respective leagues. Q: In all the other big leagues the winner is the team with the most points at season end. A: Its a dumb comparison because those leagues are vying for prestigious European places or trying to avoid relegation. Also those clubs are sustained by many years of tradition and dedicated hardcore fanbases who will pay their match ticket regardless of the context, unlike fickle A league supporters who went AWOL during covid.

How Townsend and the APL have handled this from the beginning has been breathtakingly bad. Open and honest communication goes a long way. I don't think the APL had the goodwill to burn on this. While they were seen as a different direction to the FA and were given some leeway by fans to get things right, there are still plenty of things like Paramount+ that are not where they should be.

Could this actually signal the end of the A league?
APL refuses to reverse decision... Active supporter groups respond by boycotting fixtures... APL digs in heel... Zero atmosphere results in virtually empty stadiums and paltry TV ratings... APL panics, tears up contract with Destination NSW, taken to court for breach of contract... Too little too late, only a modest recovery, clubs continue to hemorrhage costs.. Broadcasters, advertisers and sponsors cancel their agreements, clubs cant afford to sue.. A league folds..

Come on Muz. Who wouldn’t want a festival of football? We could have an all stars match where the teams are dressed as Marvel and DC characters. What about ‘The Masked Footballer’ or Dancing with the Players’? They might even bring back the adult male Bindi Irwin and dancing Aussie Animals. What’s not to like. While the rest of the world knows football is all about passionate supporters, Danny Boy and the APL think it’s all about marketing gimmicks.  On the upside, this decision might convince me to go to the next roar ‘home’ game …. just to be part of a walkout.
