If Gustafson thinks playing long ball football for 70 minutes will work then he's out he's depth, the amount of times they could not progress the ball into midfield was ridiculous.

By the way what has Ernie Merrick done since he's the disruptor?

You are right, unfortunately, you could have said it 20 years and still be right.

Women's football is a developing sport where everyone began with a clean slate to create the football culture they wanted.  Indeed certain nations have enjoyed a 10 year head-start over others  We're one of them, and yet we still chose to select and develop the same type of player we always have where as the Europeans and even Asians started later and now are going past us.  Why did this happen?

Its because this is who we are as a football nation. The men are the same. Our football culture will NOT change.

The Matilda's remind me of the story of the Emperor's New Clothes. They have been built up by the media, particularly the non football media and sold to the public as this world class combination but in reality are just a very ordinary mob with a coach who is out of his depth.Missing their best striker is difficult to overcome but their tactical naivety and defensive frailties were exposed by a determined Nigerian side.

Chidiac should be in the starting line up for the Canada game-she looked our best player in her her cameo appearance. Also we should not forget that Gorry's tackle which received a yellow could easily have been a red so apart from being reduced to ten women last night she would not have been available for the next game.

Gielnik was injured, more so than Simon.
it was Siemsen, Crummer as possibles, both terrible.
mcnamara did not make the reserves.

imo, it’s crazy that heymann has been left out for so long, top aussie goal scorer this past season and very quick.

Ayres was another that could have been considered. In fantastic scoring form.

We do have a tall striker….Gielnik…oh wait she wasn’t picked!!
I’ll just pick 2 injured players and use a tall central defender if we get in a situation where we need a tall target in the middle.
oh shit it worked…sorry Tony but we lost!

I think many of us were questioning Gustavson’s tactical ability some time back but today we saw that question answered.
Everyone I have spoken to and on this forum too was asking.
Is he gonna change something? Subs? Plan B?

Kennedy may have scored after going up front, but remember it was from a corner where she would have been anyway even if she was still playing at the back. So moving her up front and pumping high balls to her actually achieved bugger all.

Reminds me of our youth sides. Lots of strange lobs into the box that Cahill would struggle to do something with, yet we don't have anyone that seemed aerially dominant

The long ball should be banned from the curriculum because it happens at all levels with Australian teams it seems lol.

Chids was great when she came on. Inexcusable that Tony didn’t make a single proactive change until past the 80 min mark.

Being at the game, I haven’t seen any replays or highlights. But my take was that Nigeria only scored from our mistakes.

Carpenter woefully out of position for their first, allowing their winger acres of space. Admittedly she made up ground, but ultimately wasn’t able to stop the cross from going on.

Second goal was a mistake from Arnold. Should’ve dealt with the initial shot.

Third goal was just fucked.

Other comments have summed it up well. High and long aimless balls into the box. No cohesion at all going forward.

I called it two years ago, but everyone was in on the Tony love fest.

That was fucking abysmal and such a shit show. First sub came with 10 minutes to go and the tactics never once changed. No plan B

If we somehow scrape through to the next round (I doubt it very much), his tenure has been nothing short of catastrophic.

I was at the game and the big thing that I noticed (again) was how poor the first touch of practically all the Australian players is. FFS, they were all terrible, with the possible exception of Cooney-Cross. It was painful to watch. No wonder they can't build up an attack any other way than put it wide and pump in a high ball, their poor first touch means that it takes them 2-3 seconds to get the ball under control, and by then if they are in the attacking third the defenders are all over them.

Passing accuracy (or rather inaccuracy) was nearly as bad, so many times a pass made under no pressure, even short passes, were 2 metres off target.

And van Egmond as a second striker??? Give me strength. The only good thing about her playing higher is that when she lost the ball we still had a lot of players behind her, compared to when she plays in midfield and loses the ball.

Gustavsson, what a clown. Waits until 10 minutes from time to make the first sub, even though by then we had been 3-1 down for 15 minutes, and his change is to put on a central defender so he can throw another central defender up front. Then he waits another five minutes before putting on a technical player who may have been able to open up the defence, but by then there is only 5 minutes plus stoppage time to go. He has no fucking idea.

Can someone explain how Raso is a winger? Competitive, fit, fiery, but an end product worse than the Leckie/Kruse combo for the Roos. Seriously, after watching her for a number of years, she has ZERO end product.

This is part of the whole problem of Aussie football, if your fast, energetic etc you are good!!…don’t worry about technical ability!!

She is not the only one…Carpenter is the same,…rip tear bust…and others. Passing is ordinary and crosses rarely achieve anything.
and Van Eggy…oh my god, embarrassing if that’s the best we have for a “10.

Some of the younger players are technically better…but don’t get much time…and must be thinking “Am I worse than these???

Next game, Grant, Nevin, Wheeler, Chids etc

of course the captains line was insane but that is the 'passion' this game has - RAW emotion - Foster was a respect Sports journalist for the national broadcaster and he was scream utter rage nonsense after we got pants....he represented exactly how we were all feeling.... it ws amazing but the pain of losing at the time probably no one appreciated it.

I was screaming similar non-sense after that match too it is why football is such a popular sport the passion and fine lines between winning and losing, qualifying and just missing out make the game the most 'dramatic' in the world and plays with your emotions - the channel 7 mob dont really seem to care....i just saw a photo of Sam Kerr on the sidelines with tears in her eyes, need more of that times 100 in football and less smiles 'we're all friends here' bullshit

Champions win, they generally are arrogant brash and rude but they fukn win and it seems Australian football doesnt understand that

I missed the old Fozzie he would have let it rip.

Foster's passion is fine yet the captain's pane was a bit of an odd kneejerk reaction. I was livid with how we played that Germany game.

I'm glad I didn't watch the 7 broadcast.

one of the best and worst nights in football i can remember

it was funny - but we just got pumped 4-nil by Germany and i was a teenager trying to hold back the tears

Old Pim Verbeek God rest his soul - the football was terrible but he was awfully unlucky in the 2nd match

at least Fozz has some bloody passion the amount of smiling and positivity these hippies had post game makes me sick - the fact someone didnt throw a chair threw the window of the gabba is a disgrace

Most of the people at the Gabba tnte are theatre goers. I rewatched the Germany game a number of years later and early on, up to the red card, we weren’t doing too badly.

Then you come back to these fucking muppets all smiling

'channel 7' - does not 'get football' - it feels like there treating it like AFL in which no one cares as long as you 'try' mentality becuz there is always another season.....you'll get another draft and the saalry cap will ensure some level of 'fairness' over the long run - football isnt like that the WC come around once every 4 years it is special every international tournament is a single bad result is often fatal the drama is amped up to 11/10

if Foster was there he would be calling for a team of captains to over throw the manager..... or Ned Zelic screaming there is not enough 'individual Brilliance' ......Les would talk about how the squad needs to come together...

fuck me i miss SBS and the world game better then these wankers smiling after we just got humiliated - im fukn raging the should be too

I think the problems are deeper than that. It was long crosses all game. Canada has one of the best defences in the world. It won't cut it. It blows my mind we have no attacking options in the squad. We brought in 2 injured players (Butt, Simon) and a 38yo mother figure who is now injured (Luik). It means we're subbing on a CB in the 78' to make things happen. Insane. Hooe against hope Kerr and Simon get up.

the squad looks incredibly toothless - they remind me of the Denmark side the Socceroos played in Qatar - they got 'stars' but the are toothless and the synergy of the squad is worse then the sum of the parts.... got to look at the coach clearly had no 'plan b'

It is unlucky Kerr is injured but there is no excuse for that 'kind' of defending

We brought in 2 injured players (Butt, Simon) and a 38yo mother figure who is now injured (Luik). It means we're subbing on a CB in the 78' to make things happen. Insane. Hooe against hope Kerr and Simon get up.

It’s beat Canada or we become a laughing stock.
imagine if Phillipines win vs Norway and go through..

honestly speaking hope Phillipines get a result for Staj what happened to him was criminal bloke was a 'great manager' with élite mentality - he forged this squad into something to be proud of winning the Asian cup- oppose to the humiliation we have tonight and the bottle job we had at the Olympics

i do hope we beat Canada but im not holding my breath Canada are a good side better then Nigeria and Ireland - hopefully we have Kerr back but im not holding my breath

these Kangaroos can play football -
