Matildas were comprehensively outplayed today, more so than in the England game. Sweden are a quality team.

Respect and hats off to the Matilda's. TonyG I've found hard, especially his lack of rotation and lack of attacking ideas. Great result for the team and the nation, hope this is just the beginning

1. Matildas looked more dangerous without Kerr. With this same line up in semi & 3rd place they wouldn't get out of the group.
2. Set pieces has been very poor. Dunno if the players no ability or bad coaching in training. Catley, Cooney Cross and Hunt are all awful.
3. I thought for a second that the Matildas are Asian cuz they look much smaller than the Swedish.
4. Judging by the first touch and ability to win one on one situation. Only Fowler, Kerr, Foord are at this level.

+xJust shows Matildas were lucky to make it this far, far better teams than them in this world cup. We have a few highly talented individuals but compared with England and Sweden we play a very naive brand of football. It’s not much more than cross it into the box and “get it to Sam”. We have no enforcers or players who can slow the play. The last two games were like watching a hardened professional team vs a talented u21 all-stars team.

Lack of versatility and bringing forward new players is insanely frustrating. Staj deserved to be here.

Sweden definitely the better team. The Matildas overachieved by reaching the semis but it was helluva ride and showed many people why football, especially at world cup level,is so big in other countries.Kerr,Foord,Fowler,Cooney-Cross ,Arnold and Hunt the standout players and Raso also shone in patches.
I could not see anything wrong with the penalty decision-Hunt certainly clipped the opponent's heel though not intentionally but did bring her down
Hopefully Federal and State pollies put more funding towards football, rather then lumping it in with "women's sport" ,otherwise the parasitic AFLW and NRLW will somehow get the benefit.

If all we can get for development is a share of $ 200 million then we can forget ever competing at the top level.

+xIf all we can get for development is a share of $ 200 million then we can forget ever competing at the top level. The English coach,Wiegman, while praising our team also said where now for Australian football ,hinting that much more money needed to be spent and if the majority of that $200 millions is allocated to other sports our sport will again be pushed into the background. From conversations I have had with non football people and articles I have read the Matildas' efforts have been seen as a great boost for women's sport. On one level that is good with more female participation in sporting activities possibly resulting but on another level it might mean that football is only one of many activities benefiting from that increased participation and funding.

It's unfortunate the players aren't on the transfermarkt website which is a good one to track progress. Fowler's City situation is still concerning. https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/sep/24/project-2023-a-five-point-plan-for-boosting-womens-football-in-englandWSL expansion fairly sure within the next year or so. So much talent out there and you'll have other leagues offering world cup player deals too. The good news is there is more football available. Some teams still getting belted but I think it'll balance out.

How can the $200m be allocated or applied for? Who decides or bids to receive funding?

In 2019: Australian rules football has been promised more than $131 million in funding from either the Coalition or Labor party during this campaign, double that of football, its nearest rival which has been promised $66m . Netball has been promised $50m with $16m pledged to cricket by both major parties.
In 2023: 200m under the guise of women's sport. Going to have to squeeze every penny.

The last two games proved how out of depth Tony is.
To lose poorly against England, in which our players showed clear fatigue, and then go in with the exact same lineup if poor poor game management.
His subs were also obvious. Van Egmond and Vine on and then maybe Chids. Surprised he did 4 today. First time he showed something different. You can't afford to be so one dimensional, not at this level.
We played better without Kerr, and whilst she's a quality player, we need to stop making our tactic, "play it Kerr and hope". Tony basically picked the best 11 players in each position, put them on the field and said, "now do something". He did not have a plan on how to utilise the players or picking the best 11 for the tactics.
The girls definitely did us proud. They have inspired a nation and girls all over the country aspire to be them. We need a quality coach who will get the best out of the Matildas and nurture a next generation or we risk going the route of the men. From world challengers and beaters to struggling against 2nd and 3rd tier sides.

+xOk Refs out there, how is that not advantage played? I'm assuming you're talking about the penalty? There’s no set time limit for how long you can play advantage for before bringing it back. It was pretty soon thereafter, so regardless what anyone thinks about the actual penalty decision, pretty much standard to give the penalty. Especially, considering that VAR was the once calling the penalty (on-field decision was no foul originally), again quite common and standard to call it back.

Bruce Mcaveney on the Women's World Cup He continued: “(The World Cup has) changed all our lives. There will be more investment, there’s no question. There’ll be more investment in the game. We know that. “It’s also given a lot of young women and men that vision that only football can create a stage like we’ve seen. As great as the other sports (are that) we have in Australia – no one loves AFL more than me – there’s only the World game that can create such a stage.

Kudos to the girls, despite the flaws that has been mentioned and I agree on top of TG’s lacking it’s been a great ride for football for us at a time when our top game is so so lacking. We needed this injection not just for women’s football but for all, hope the FA make the most of it this time looking ahead. Been fun fellas I’ve Enjoyed all the discussions and activity amongst us.

+xIt’s best we all forget it nothings going to change. Back to the ‘ footy ‘. We are an insular nation and that’s how we always will be. Dont think that’s everyone mate. I give a rats about NRL or AFL, I’m sure many do but for those of us that play, coach, support the real football we will endeavour to maintain the excitement that this has created especially with the younger kids. There are many new converts whose eyes have been open in our contest against the world.

TG in his response re V Egg. my response would be hey mate how long have you had to instil and coach the relationships between the players ??
Any one could see how fatigued the girls were against England and then TG puts out the same v Sweden…???????
When at last he subbed on a few fresh players, It was all so so far to to late…and Sweden didn’t score any more.
Imagine all the training and sacrifice those girls have done to get so few minutes and for Wheeler and Luik to get nothing!!!
It’s apparent to me that TG mismanaged the concept of tournament football. Next coach please.

Our best two games were against Canada and Denmark when we played a false 9 without Kerr. Such a ride. Fourth at a World Cup.
