+x+x+xInvariably there'll be a lot of media pride but also bickering and editorials about it actually winning anything. The issue is the Asian Cup is still so minimal and it all goes very cold from here. I've just had a realisation. The jumping up and down on the footpath when we won the bid at the start of Covid. It's all done now. All the work and hope. Semi vs England out and 3 late opportunities to level are probably a bit more than I'd anticipated. im shattered we lost but 'come on' man this was probably one of the best things if not the best thing to happen to football in this country - [bar maybe 05 qualification] i dont remember there being such a buzz about the game then right now i know we lost tonight but we 'could of' got knocked out in the group stages the fact we made it this far hopefully will mean the fucken dick heads in government Albo and co ACTUALLY put some money into the sport to build infrastructure instead of throwing billions of AFL and NRL all the fucken time No other sport can do this. We need to step forward as a country and start to show our ambition. get to get the wankers in Parliament to support the game want to see a few billion thrown at grass roots infrastructure for boys and girls

If Boubacar Kamara can play EPL then so could any of the golden gen. Absolute fraud of a player. Anyway a lot of pundits have said the gap in class is bigger this season so there are a number of shabby players. Sometimes the EPL gets pegged back with what is done on the pitch but there's a lot of magic too.

+x+x+x+x+x+x+xLet me guess...if The Lionesses lose, the narrative in England will be "international football sucks and the Women's EPL is the superior competition..." Just like they spin every 4 years when England inevitably fail to live up to the hype. Just think, WHEN we beat them and win the final we will have the same amount of stars on our jerseys as the "home of football". hahahahahahahahahahaahahahahah So “ WHEN “ will that be ? Were you holding that post the whole time wanking yourself for this moment No, just reminding big mouths to do their talking AFTER the game. Righto mate, wash your hands when you're done You need a cuddle ? Yes

+x+xIs Renard a potential for Matildas? NO!! I'm sick of Euro coaches failing to comprehend The Australian Spirit! We should be throwing $$$ at Montemurro. Yes ok I agree. There was definitely a capping of spirit. I think our local coaches just get it so much more and we have capable ones.

Must say that however disappointed I am at the result and to some extent how it happened through defensive errors, I have to say I'm proud of what the Matildas achieved in this tournament. And even with tonight's game, a bit of luck and we could have gone through, because even though England looked better throughout, Australia had 4 good chances to score (two headers to Kerr, Kerr's volley, Vine shot) and if one of them goes in the game would obviously have been different.

+xHow the fuck does Carpenter play for a Champions League winning club in France. She has always lacked that last bit of skill, and runs around aimlessly like the proverbial headless chook. Can't cross a ball to save her life. Her first touch is horrible. Even excluding the defensive cockup that a 10 year old would be ashamed of (I counted three missed swipes at the ball after her atrocious decision to let the ball run on), she has been poor all tournament. Is she more the athlete type? Going to happen unless we get developing that our athlete type players just won't be taken by big clubs anymore.

Don't mind losing to England but couldn't get that Carpenter's mistake out of my head. Right from the Ireland game I knew she was the liability but didn't expect would be this bad.

+x+x+x+x+xCooney-Cross & Fowler are the future of Aus women's football. They are the archetype we need to start producing over and over again. if we have a full season league with full time professionals and money to buy some coaches for the elite level we can really go to the next level Should get some decent prize money out of this tournament There's going to come a point, just like it did with the men's, where Australian players may struggle to get into top-flight Euro football as the game grown internationally. We really need a strong and well-financed local competition. It cannot be half-arsed! yeah there is a narrow window now to really petition for grass roots funding and build momentum for a professional league before the womans game explodes in the men's game during the mid 90s the average wage was just 70,000 pounds. Of course the long established nsl could export players good enough to play at that level, it was barely a step up. Now we really struggle. I reckon more than half of our golden generation struggle to make the epl today Peak Kewell, Emerton, Cahill & V-Bomber. Not the rest. Yeah iv always thought they were the ones, to match them to current EPL players id say they are these: Leeds Kewell - Son/Salah level Emerton - Clyne/Digne level Cahill - Mitrovic/Delli Alli level Viduka - Firmino/Jesus level

Well now Tony you can rotate all you like against your home nation. Our CM needed to be refreshed. Surely we've got two more who can come on for big performances?

Fuuuuuuuck.
Got our asses handed to us, regardless of the fouls and the ref.
There will be lots of talk about Tony’s fuckups (rightfully so) and Kerr’s misses, but Vine needed to bury that shot, not shoot straight at the keeper hoping for a spill.
I think we really suffered from lack of rotation after ET with France. Fowler and Foord were cooked tonight. Cooney-Cross just played her way into the Women’s Premier League.
Someone need to take a professional foul for the team on the last goal, as soon as they broke away.

First England goal was criminal. Raso trotting and not racing in to pressure the passer. Two defenders can't block the pass. The worst is Gorry, Fowler and CC standing in a triangle around the scorer.

+xCrazy that there was only a three day break Considering there was six day breaks in the group stage Squad rotation in World Cups is important, the short breaks and extra time in knockout rounds makes it tough. That loss to Nigeria really hurt, we could have rested the entire starting 11 against Canada had we won that match.

Semi final's is a great achievement, I would have taken that given we were on the verge of being eliminated in the group stages if we couldn't beat a poor Canada team which we did win.
I think the luck didnt go on our side, we had plenty of it against France in the penalty shootout so sometimes these can even itself out but im very proud of this team. The lack of squad rotation didnt help and we really missed Kennedy at the back who was a corner stone of the back 4.
They have changed this country particularly for football and for women's sport, the key is govt. and big business to get on board so the legacy of this tournament can be confirmed rather than waste this opportunity due to politics especially from egg ball whom dont have the same pulling power football brings on the world stage into Australia.
In terms of the game Sam Kerr scored a belter and had a chance to equalise but I think it paupered over the cracks of an average performance especially in possession we played too many long balls but also we made some bad mistakes defending which you cant do at this level especially Carpenter who was responsible for 2 of the 3 goals that were conceded. The first goal she didnt clear her lines and the second goal was below average defending which we shouldn't ever conceded after failing to cover the defender from the long ball from but this lessons to be learned for future tournaments.
For context this is our first ever semi final at a senior World Cup mens or women's, and first time in the final 4 at any World Cup since the Joeys made the final way back in 1999! Hopefully we can use this experience starting at the Olympics next year and aim for a medal. But overall its been an remarkable achievement to make this far given our population and overall GDP, whilst we have an ever growing football culture and I have a feeling the growth of football we get bigger with more boys and especially girls will play this game so its important the infrastructure along with the coaching and education into the game is improved on.
I think I will look back on this tournament as a potential game changer to the sport, like we seen previously to what the 2006 World Cup did to the sport too but I think it will be even bigger.

Just got back to where I'm staying after the game. More to say later but will say this before I sack out. Shambolic defending for all 3 goals. Particularly the second and 3rd. FFS.

+x+xLooking at our 3 late opportunities. Geez that is gutting. Kerr misses some getable chances. Her offside chance was uncharacteristically weak too. Must struggle with the pressure of international football compared to club football? Surely it is much more likely she lacked that extra match sharpness she needed because she was returning from a calf injury than any mental issue. Her goal was brilliant.

+x+xThat was terrible from our defence. Carpenter was all over the place. Those 3 goals were easily avoidable, but we were just not on our game. The defence looked lethargic and at all sorts. Got to wonder if the fact they never had any rest caught up to them. Tony will stay on, but he has some major questions to answer. Needing goals and throwing on a tall player for the obvious long ball is not a tactic. Also having a player of Chidiacs quality on the bench and using her for about 10 minutes all tournament is unacceptable. I know we can look at this and say its a great result to make the last four, but the reality is that it could have been better. We should have been better in that game. England were made to look much better than they have been all tournament. We were lethargic because Tony rotated the squad very poorly. You've highlighted many reasons why Tony does not need to stay on! He does not need to stay on and personally I would want Montemurro, however I don't see Montemurro leaving Juve. The FA will keep tony because he got us further than we've ever been, especially as we were on the verge of being knocked out, and he brought good vibes. The decision to keep him will not be a decision of the head, but one full of emotion.

+xThe pain the pain of it all It was amazing ride following this team the past month though yep and thats the main focus about it all. Was brilliant better than I ever expected and kudos to the girls giving their all. No use pointing fingers here and there as much as we all like to. We're in the play off for the Bronze (a very welcome Thanks game for fans), still way better than those knocked out in the Grp stages. Been great all the press the last month Thanks to their results you couldn't have picked this pre WWC. Proud the nation got behind it - all I hope for ahead is the FA acknowledge the efforts and improve their exposure for all to see - we have 2 good NT Football teams that deserve seeing their results are made to good use down to grass roots, get your shit together FA and State Feds.

So woke us this morning reflecting on the shit second goal but I've found myself more annoyed at the third. I mean what the fuck are you doing when the person covering the widest player goes to the ball when there 3 other defenders inside. They should have been sliding across, screaming at each other and sorted it out way earlier. Just baffling. I wonder if that would have happened had Kennedy been playing. What are the odds of having one of the best backs, by the numbers, getting sick on the day of the semi. Having said that what a wonderful ride we've been on. This whole month has shown why football is the best game in the world. Nothing beats it for drama, joy and despair. And we're in despair this morning. Good comments by a lot of the girls post match to fund the game. Good on them. #fundthegame

Despite being unhappy about Tony G’s game plan for years, to reach the semis at a World Cup is a great achievement by the Matildas.
I’ve had a long, hard look at Tony G’s background. He was appointed by a panel of:
Johnston - CEO Football Aus
Rene Nagarotto - FA Board Member and businessperson.
Former national team players, Marco Bresc, Sarah Walsh and Amy Duggan.
Current Football Aus Tech Dir - Trevor Morgan.
For Tony G
Pros
- Former pro of 10 years
- Former US National team Ass Coach in two tenures
- Took a Swedish club side to UEFA Champ League final in 2014 (massive achievement)
- Trained teacher
Cons
- Has no experience whatsoever in Aus National Curriculum or the 4 UEFA powerhouses we’ve based our national direction in. Underage Aus teams have been steeped in different training ground methods of Proactive football to Tony G’s game plan.
Reaching 3rd or 4th in a WC is a monumental achievement though.
