A lot of people have ago at the media and its coverage of football well the WWC has had a lot of positive articles this includes from News Corp, SEN, ABC and other outlets. 

The TV ratings are high and the stadium attendance is also very impressive. 

It is good to see the media getting on board - if you are going to call them out when they are having ago at us when you need to praise them when they are supporting us. 

Ill add this the Matildas hit 4.8m viewers against Nigeria - the AFL Grand Final gets around 3m Viewers - DO NOT TELL ME FOOTBALL IS NOT POPULAR IN AUSTRALIA

Need to learn it might be  worth trying to win the MSM over opposed to constently being at battle with them....might be the only way to win the war 

Seven tries to bury football every chance they get  - if it's men playing. They tend to fall in line with their bogan audience and treat the womens game better. It fits with their overall world view that AFL is for real men and sockah is for girls.

The ratings don't lie here in that there is definitely a lot of potential in the womens game. Surely on the back of this, there can be enough suits that could value the ALW high enough to give a decent deal. Something that lifts their salary floor from the 3-400k they're on at the moment and turn them professional (or closer to it).

The round of 16 clash win over Denmark is officially the number one rated program of the year, averaging an audience of 3.56 million viewers across Seven and streaming service, 7Plus.

That number would be even higher when Optus Sport viewing figures and live sites are taken into account.

To compare that to other sporting showpieces in Australia, last year’s AFL grand final had an average audience of 3.186 million, the NRL decider brought in 2.756 million viewers and game II of this year’s State of Origin series, the highest rating of the three, averaged 3.178 million.

The next target in the Matildas’ sights could be the 3.6 million mark set by Ash Barty’s Australian Open final win over Danielle Collins last year.

And who knows, if they keep winning, the 2003 Rugby World Cup final, or the 2005 Australian Open men’s final (Lleyton Hewitt vs. Marat Safin), could be under threat.

The ratings against France should be a step up again. And if we get through that, a semi final against England would be an even bigger step up again.

It is officially the most watched TV event of the year and had a higher viewership than every State of Origin match & last year's AFL Grand Final

Seven spends hundreds of millions per year to the AFL to get a high rating AFL grand final. 

They got it from us almost for free.

For what it's worth the German public broadcaster lowballed from the 10M FIFA wanted when their own budget is 8.4bn in mandatory licence fees. Broadcasters who went cheap have an egg on their face. Yet, Optus have apparently (their podcast upload of broadcast is good) set a new benchmark in quality tournament coverage so kudos to that.

I believe the UK has some law that England needs to be on public TV but I'm not entirely sure.

It functions similarly to the anti siphon list that Australia had which was to protect FTA from pay television. Funnily enough, the old NSL wasn't on it - this is the loophole Seven used to help kill the league by buying the rights then starting a media blackout and pay TV couldn't get a look in because Sevenhad exclusive rights. It later came out when Stokes sued the AFL/NRL and half of Australia over the failure of C7 that they expected the AFL to return the good will gesture of killing sockah off. Fun ride that was back in the day. Not sure if the anti siphon list still is a thing, I've lived o/s for almost 10 years now.

In UK. FIFA world cups men and women, Euros and the FA cup are the most protected football events but I think pay TV is allowed to simulcast (or maybe delayed, not sure). After that, there is less protection for FTA, but I think the list of tournaments bats pretty deep and there is in some way at least a priority for FTA coverage. Worth noting that club football has no protections as far as I know (besides FA cup final)

Are the ratings big in Germany even with them out of the tournament? Surely there isnt huge interest given the time of the matches as well.

Those numbers are taking the piss. The only legitimate boost to the economy comes from international tourists, and there are only a few thousand of those. Even if they each spend $10k in Australia, that's a few tens of millions for the whole tournament. Nothing to sneeze at but certainly not in the billions.

Interstate tourists shouldn't count because it's just robbing Peter to pay Paul. And locals obviously don't count because if they didn't spend the money on the WWC, they would just spend it on something else.

Robbing Peter to pay Paul? Sort of. You're buying a plane ticket, getting accommodation, food and drinks, merch etc. Stuff you wouldn't do if you stayed home.

So it may not be as high as what they're saying but it'd be significant.

They always make it sound like it's the consumer pumping the money in, but in reality those figures are mostly made up of business facing products & services.

Buying plane tickets etc. doesn't suddenly make you richer. If you didn't spend your money on that you would probably do it on something else, or invest it or whatever.

From a national perspective, the only genuine economic boost is from international tourists (plus players, officials, etc.) who came here for the WWC, and who otherwise wouldn't have come to Australia. Everything else is money that would have been in the economy anyway.

From a state perspective, it might be good for NSW if fans came from Victoria to watch a match, but then it's correspondingly bad for Victoria. And since there are matches all over the country, it's pretty much a wash.

. The money would not necessarily be in the economy. The money from a tournament from people travelling interstate goes directly to the pocket of local businesses. 

Pretty much this. I drove down to Sydney last Monday night, got on the piss, got dinner, watched the game, had more beers, late night kebab, uber and stayed the night in accommodation. Got up in the morning and had breakfast, filled the car up and drove 500k back home.

Would not have spent a cent if I'd have stayed at home watching Have You Been Paying Attention.

We don't owe them anything. They have spent much of their time giving Football a bad name and trying every possible thing to damage the game. They are just jumping on board because they are trying to make some money. There is no shift in their views, but rather a realisation that people are invested and they see financial potential.

Socceroos and Matildas TV rights have surely become significantly more valuable now than they were in 2021.. 

interesting point, it would be more valuable but at the sametime the value is based on what providers are 'willing to pay' 

I dont mind the current 'set-up' with Paramount and 10 but for the future of the game the FA should try get Optus to the table 

the AL NEEDS the EPL  ideally to boost viewership and spark interest from the large amount of Fans who follow the EPL 

The Pandemonium of 'hosting' and achieving at a world cup wont last last forever sadly but the interest in the Top European leagues and the UCL will always be there.....it is a boost that the AL needs from fans tuning in to see the domestic league as part of their subscription  

there are a lot of EPL fans who dont watch the AL in Australia but probably would if they had access to it 

Optus seems largely uninterested in local football outside of World Cups but maybe the Matildas success will change their attitude. Problem is, the FA rights come up first, and if they end up on Optus then we'll have split broadcasters between the ALM/ALW and national sides/Australia Cup.

A-League rights won't come up till 2027, and unless there is a major turnaround they will probably be significantly devalued. They might end up going to Optus for production costs plus some kind of revenue sharing agreement.
