100000% astute observation Mid... Ive asked you this before too,

"WHAT DO WE SEE AS SUCCESS?"

Thats the 64 billion dollar question.

A couple of givens, first a strong player base with decent development models, second quality national teams preforming well in major tournaments..

AS to the middle bit i.e. away from park Football leading to national selection is the clusterfuck ...

What gets in the way of many discussions in this area is the dismissal of any idea or comment that does not fit with the particular group or ideals a person or a group have.

IMO a classic example is, we are the number four code behind Cricket, AFL & NRL and in NSW & QLD rugby union also draws fans... further these codes are entrenched extremely well connected to government & business with large traditional fan bases and plenty of media support. However use this as an example to tread carefully is often met with outrage as being unimportant and comments like we are not unique... there are many other examples...

IMO success would be setting a plan in place to reach a certain goal, for me 36 teams across two divisions, playing mid February  to early December, with no salary cap, and internal transfer fees.... to this I would add each team would need to be a community team representing a number of their local area clubs.... after achieving this goal new goals could be set.... the plan would be result based rather than time based, so if achieved in five years or twenty years as long as steady and measurable progress was being made...

Love this post by a guy on a different site...sorta puts many of my thoughts in a single paragraph...

Australian football just doesn’t know what kind of sporting mentality they want to adopt, they’re caught in their own AFL/NRL way or the American Franchise way or the European Football meritocracy way and this is reflected in their fanbase, look at the comments on this website for evidence. Until they sort out this dichotomy of what football in Australia should be, then I fear you’ll be having these kinds of debates about governance, rather than what’s happening on the pitch.

yep and as MSC mentions What Do We SEE As Success ????

We are FOOTBALL no ?.
About time and long overdue we show and do what/who our CODE really is ?!
NOT AFL/NRL/Franchise's - its JJ's time to set the path what FOOTBALL IS in Australia, FA your the Governance, stop playing politics and treading lightly to cover your backs and the threats from the resisters.
Set the directive for the game below APL, they run their own course the rest of the eco system needs to finally get the course and vision of unity as hard as it will be but it needs the start, first big leap forward, the balls of a leader/CEO.
Its gonna hurt and be a rough ride but the game, the countless people involved/Clubs will move with the current I have no doubt about it.

I'm dreaming as always Guus as well :)

Plus, if CL comes to be the con to the founding NST Clubs, say NO.
Forget it, wait another bloody decade :(

If the NST league gets the green light, I wouldn't be surprised if we still see a CL but for the 3rd tier (what would be 8/9 NPL feds). Whether it's one or two teams from each, or maybe a number of slots via ranking/coefficients in groups, the idea would be for the best NPL clubs to connect and improve standards to get closer and ready for NST entry. Could even be used for promotion to NST when that becomes available. The group format would be shorter and cheaper and can run during their season.

And what I'd like to see for NST and A-League is a league cup, groups then knockout format. Having 16 teams from each league would be perfect, ends up 8 groups of 4.

I'm dreaming again, aren't I?

You are mate, but is a good dream :)

Have they ever stated WTF a CL model is? I mean if its juts a re-hash of the old NPL Australian finals series then no need for financial guarantees, club licensing agreements and the like, its first past the post gets to compete in an end of season comp....

Thanks jc, yeah I believe AAFC has been granted observer status now, not sure if they have a legitimate vote yet.

No idea what observer status is

Takes minimum 4 years to get to Voting status

Perth will be back at the start of the Queue this Novembers AGM.  Not sure about Newcastle

Not to my knowledge.
If it's just a cup comp with the foundation members, then that's kinda dumb and doesn't make much sense.
If it's a cup comp with the top level NPL winners, then if it was to run this year then Preston Lions would miss out as they are not a top level NPL team.
If it's the latter, then does all the work/money the foundation clubs have put in just get binned?

EXACTLY.. SMFC would be the ONLY NST foundation club that would play in it this year :P

He's too busy trying to flog his Ange Postecoglou book, while spending the better part of the last 5-6 years slagging off the club he is writing about... (I assume he makes some mention of the first 30 odd years of Anges life in a biography?  I would never buy anything produced by that fraud).

In a way I dont blame him selling out, the APl gives him access to the message they want to push ut out so he can't be seen to bite the hand that feeds him ... We all saw what happened to old mate Janakan and his fake slavic ex NSL financial wizard... hahahahahahahah

Not sure how it works with the new members. I'm guessing they would need to expand the voting pool.

My concern is that this is too far down the road to turn back but out of desperation all we agree to some sort of champions league model so they can say something has been produced.

If we dont get a proper league it needs to be binned.

Have they ever stated WTF a CL model is? I mean if its juts a re-hash of the old NPL Australian finals series then no need for financial guarantees, club licensing agreements and the like, its first past the post gets to compete in an end of season comp....

Correct me if I'm wrong mono, but he is referring to the AAFC being a qualifying member on the pathway to provisional member. (They might be a provisional member now, and the site hasn't been updated)

From the Football Australia website:
Football Australia also has the following qualifying and provisional members who are on the path to becoming a full member:
Qualifying Members

  1. Association of Australian Football Clubs Ltd
  2. Newcastle Jets Football Club Pty Limited
Provisional Members
  1. Football Coaches Australia Incorporated
  2. WMG Football Club Ltd t/a Western United FC
  3. MSW No.1 Pty Limited t/a Macarthur FC

yes agree we need more football media out there but he's only looking out for one league and debunks what could or more so should happen for the game.
Journo's and the few lacking regards to our code should at least be more open and show support for anything to advance our game/systems.

we also don't know what is happening in the board room. Joe Lewis' article cited apl needing cash as an issue and the CL model was floated after APIA had wobbles and the APL distribution was cut. Diplomatic advocacy, apathy, soft sabotage are all equally likely in my eyes with our lack of info

Yep, this is better than what we expected. Nick has publicly stated the Championship model is not what the 8 clubs signed up for. There seems to be an alignment on the direction (hopefully h&a) just need to do more work to get the $$$ to stack up… easy for us to take pot shots from afar without knowing the details however my reading of the play is that everyone is invested to make it nst h&a work, just need corporate backing or more teams….

we also don't know what is happening in the board room. Joe Lewis' article cited apl needing cash as an issue and the CL model was floated after APIA had wobbles and the APL distribution was cut. Diplomatic advocacy, apathy, soft sabotage are all equally likely in my eyes with our lack of info

nick galatas and this maybe be almost devoid of info, but they do seem happy which is information. If it was "champions league or nothing" or "no budging on entry requirements" I doubt we get statements like this

Vince R making fun of how they sound like chat gtp, but a league has been pretty similar.
