Im with jc on this one.... Summer is for the beach NOT roasting in the stands watching overheated players crawl around in the midday sun.

come on MSC whats with your fellow SMH supporter.....
Summer ?
As he would know it didn't work back in the NSL days as well.
SUMMER is NOT for FOOTBALL - we're all brought up WINTER is FOOTBALL season.
Saying National comps should be aligned, is a good point but we're not linked in any shape of form but for playing the same game.

Hasn't it been ready for a while? I thought it was ready to go, just a club or two were still deciding on entering.
What do you mean it's comical no one knows about pro/rel? I also thought that was pretty clear there isn't pro/rel until the comp is mature.
I wouldn't worry about it kicking off in March instead of October, it won't matter until pro/rel comes along.

Pro/rel for the npl competitions. Clubs need to know if clubs are going to be leaving the local system.

Yeah those 90s days where pretty decent but crowds started tapering off for other issues... It wasn't Summer, Its just my preference... Football is winter sport and I enjoy watching it then.... Looks like FA is hellbent on winter too, so it doesn't make sens for thousands of clubs to play in Winter and a handful to be Summer.

Someone did an analysis and found that crowds dropped 30 percent in winter but passes per game went up 10 percent. So u are trading quality for commercial viability

There is also the health and safety issues related with the Summer. A-Leagues have a very high rate of soft tissue injuries due to the heat drying out all of the pitches.
It's also important to remember that it's not just about match day. This is a full-time professional job. That means that they are training nearly every day in the Summer heat.
Then there is the issue of the rain. In Winter you don't get those torrential downpours that you get in the warmer months. Thunderstorms are also far less likely in the Winter, so games aren't delayed or postponed. Winter gives the option of playing games in the afternoon, can't do that in the Summer.
The arguments for a Summer comp are pretty much non-existent. People often say crowds will be smaller, but there is zero evidence to suggest that because we have never had a professional league played in the Winter. Comparing the NSL to the AL or future NST is a flawed comparison as there are just too many differences across the board.

But they can compare nsl with nsl since it changed from summer to winter which seems at least to provide some evidence

You've made an assumption there that more passes = better quality.

Spain were passing 800 to 1000 passes a game in years gone by.

In this tournament it's way less than that and they're in the final.

Agreed, tho i think when comparing summer to winter thr change in passes doesnt reflect a change in tactics, but speed of play as the weather is cooler which would mean a jump in quality. Whereas spains change in passes reflects a change in tactics rather than quality

Southmelb as above
Sure was good for a while but it fell and times have changed since way back then.
AL with all the $$$ and exposure has struggled as well.
Sydney Brizzo people for starters summer just isn’t our game more and more - people do a lot more in their day now especially summer.
Even Melb enjoys great summers days.
Adelaide gets sticking hot as well.
Winter is our time play

I think there a few holes and assumptions in there mate. They don’t play during the day in summer anymore, and if it’s hot at night they have drinks breaks like in other places of the world. I watch a bit of Northern Territory football, they are a "no-fuss" inspiration for playing in hot and humid conditions. Training in the heat of the day is an interesting point, I’d like to know how they go about that, surely they wouldn’t be allowed outdoors over a certain temp.

On the weather, we’re a huge continent, you can’t paint places for winter or summer climates. There are various climates. Some cities have dry winters, and some have wind and hail. Some have dry summers, and some have wind and floods. You say winter gives the option of afternoon games, to me that's the preference and night is the option, but it's not really an option when some don’t want to play at night anyway… just today the Panthers posted about avoiding the “chilly winter nights”. There’s no “one” solution, unfortunately. What’s best for some might not be best for the majority.

Saying there’s “zero evidence” that crowds will be smaller in winter is an interesting statement. There definitely is verified data to suggest otherwise. Not even comparing ALM to NSL, as Grazor said, the data is there for NSL winter vs NSL summer. The data is clear and acknowledged in various reports. Sorry, had to clear that up.

Pro/rel for the npl competitions. Clubs need to know if clubs are going to be leaving the local system.

Ah gotcha. Apparently some clubs already know. Team Tas said they’re good as done. Caroline Springs too. I think it’s just the cone of silence that’s making people think it won’t go ahead, but the silence/confidentiality was all part of the plan. We know it all soon enough, I guess. Gotta be soon!

That is only evidence for the NSL and cannot be applied to a different league in a different era for a different generation. I also said there has never been a 'professional' league played in Winter. The NSL was never fully professional.

Dry or wet Winters is not the point I was making. The point is about the extremes that effect professional games. Torrential rain and thunderstorms cause delays and cancellations every year in the Aleague. Torrential rain and thunderstorms are very rare in the Winter. Also this discussion is about the NST, which as of right now will be a NSW/VIC comp. Big maybes on the other states, but maybe Adelaide, maybe Hobart, maybe Brisbane/GC/SC. Australia is a big place but those places aren't that far apart. In those cities Winter has far less extremes than the Summer.

I can only think of one or two cancelled ALM matches in recent years. I could name at least half a dozen from this winter in NSW alone! Let's move on hey.

Is that because of the synthetic pitches up there?  Its pretty rare down here in VIC for matches to be washed out.
Cancelled because of crowd violence sure, but not weather :)

Hehe. My whole life Sydney has been synonymous with rain, and it certainly hasn't let up this year. It really sucks that player numbers are rising and we already had nowhere to put them, now the pitches are bogged in, it's a real blow. A stack of comments on this article:

Looking at the averages in Sydney it seems rain is pretty shit from Jan through to Jun. With Feb and June being consistently the highest, and everything in between those months being not much better. It's then typically dryer from Jul to Dec. In other words, there is probably no truly ideal period to have a full league in Sydney, but if the majority was played in the 3rd and 4th quarters, that would seem to be better than 1st and 2nd quarters.

Last I checked most NPL clubs are on synthetic but the palace.
NST Clubs in the ring to date synthetic.
Most Prem1 Club games synthetic.
Sadly local AA down the system mostly grass and one of the worst season in memory the amount of rain, even with good drainage the amount of rain drainage can’t cope.
Mind you many more local clubs are working on getting synthetic rallying local council, sponsers and fund raising.
