Kidna worrying honestly, though it could be much ado about nothing. He's still eligible to switch to Peru and England. Here's hoping its just a coincidence or just something innocent, and not sourness about missing the Asian Cup

He hasn't liked any Socceroo post on Instagram since August, when he was only a train on squad member for the England/ New Zealand friendlies and didn't get on the field. He wasn't selected for the squad against Mexico & obviously missed out on the WCQs & Asian Cup. Hasn't played for us since the game against Argentina in June. Please tell me that Arnie hasn't fucked this one up, like he did with Volpato!!!! We actually need both of these frign players

I think it's nothing or coincidence. The "and now for Peru" comment he liked was over a month ago before he wasn't selected and he liked it because it was his friend posting it. I can't explain the deleted posts but their were very few and it might be just privatised because of the constant comments from Peruvians wanting him to play. He is active on twitter just as much as still has all his Socceroos posts still up and his dad continuous likes anything to do with Alex and the Roos.

I just don't like seeing these posts going around on twitter with such little evidence, the irony is, it's an easy way to deter the play. Twitter user overreacts > Australian's misdirect their anger and start abusing player > Player doesn't want to play for us anymore.

I also have to assume that Arnie asked both Ale and Alex about this what they'd rather do, and I think their clubs would've done the same. I'd really hope Arnie didn't just speak to the clubs about them possibly playing with the Olyroos instead of Arnie telling the players themselves first.

And @SoccerooFan he did like a Socceroos post on twitter in October.

The realisation we've risked losing Robertson and Circati on a hope to have them for an Olympic tournament instead of locking in them in for senior duty forever, in hindsight, is a bit scary.

I know Circati is pretty keen but watch Italy linger if he moves to a new big club or gets promoted.

It's a pretty serious oversight. On form and ability both deserved to make the Asian Cup squad, arguably more minutes in the recent Roos games, and it's understandable they'd be aggrieved about their exclusion. Especially since they've been umming and aaahing about who to represent, perhaps Arnie has overestimated their attachment to Australia.

A lot of us laughed at Boyle when he claimed he had a chance to play for us but look at him now. Souttar is a top footballer so these two genuinely want to play and that's important.

I hope this is all just a big nothing and we're reading too much into it. Cap both adequately by June.

We lost lamgarek as well for a silly reason so I don't think there's anything wrong with questioning this as we know Australian football loves to shoot themselves in the foot

I can understand his frustration. Robertson and Circati are the future, both appear to have a high ceiling that could see them playing EPL and Serie A some day, but Arnie prefers plodders like Deng, Atkinson and even no name Yazbek. How many times do Deng and Atkinson need to trip over their feet and gift goals to the opposition before Arnie realises they are hopeless? That’s the difference between Arnie and Ange, Ange will build a team for the future whereas Arnie is focussed on winning the next game and improving his win/loss percentage.

Tend to agree with this.

One  or two players who don't really want to pull the Socceroo shirt on isn't a worry.

Ned Zelic quit the Socceroos prematurely after having a hissy fit in the early 2000s. Most of his Socceroo teammates didn't like him much -  thought he was arrogant. Not great for team spirit and cohesion.

Haven't really had a good look at Robertson to have an opinion. Although has looked classy  against Ecuador. His disadvantage is that there a lot of  potential Socceroos from a new generation who have better technique than any previous generation. Robertson has hot competition.

This is the wrong way to think about it. Players often have multiple allegiances, wanting to play for another country doesn’t infer they don’t want to play for Australia. If they aren’t getting picked for one nation, and opens the door for another nation to swoop in. That doesn’t mean they don’t want to play for Australia, it does mean they want to play international football and will play for the country that provides them that opportunity.

He plays as an 8 - box to box, but has the technical ability to play as a 10. He's been the best player for Portsmouth this season, so would equate to being in the top 5 players in League 1 - at the age of 20. It's been reported that Everton are interested & tracking his progress. Obviously a completely different player than Irvine, but this kid SHOULD be our long term #8 for the Socceroos, with O'Neill at #6 & Volpato at #10.

In the end, don't project negativity on these players when none of this is concrete, we just got into the new year, lets not start creating narratives when nobody has made any decisions. Just watch them at their clubs and support them. Simple.

I don't think Arnie managed this very well either - he made a big song and dance about him, his Dad & grandfather in March and then he got bigger all opportunity after that - he should've at least got some game time in England as he's based there!!

That’s the difference between Arnie and Ange, Ange will build a team for the future whereas Arnie is focussed on winning the next game and improving his win/loss percentage.

Just watching Atkinson play against Argentina on a replay, and ( hope are you reading this, Lurker) he has improved his defensive capabilities quite a lot from playing in one of the toughest physical body on body contact leagues in the world. He tackled and dispossessed his Argentinian left wing opponent on a number of occasions. It wasn't De Maria, he  mainly played on the right.

Atkinson was always good going forwards, but if he can play as well as he did against World Champs Argentina ( at the 55 min mark ATM), there is no tougher opposition in world football. Although Atkinson  had  to deal with Mbappe in the last World Cup.

Have't seen Yazbek yet, so I don't  know much about him. I think he might be in the Bos cohort.

Arnie thinks the Bos cohort has led to the first cohort having received about 10 years of the NC program in development. He thinks his generation have skill like no other previous generation in Aus history.

I've been very impressed with Hollman in the AL as a DM for Macarthur.  A decent  ball winner and a terrific technician on the ball, with good vision.

The likes of Circati,  Robertson and Volpato aren't so good they will walk into England or Italian national sides. England has 75 players playing UEFA Big Five league football. Italy has 79. That is a lot of competition.  Anyone  overlooking the Socceroos  to play for them is risking never being called up, as opposed to regular qualifying comp football, plus Asian and World Cups.

Unless one plays for the Big Six clubs ( Spurs, the Mans, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea) in England or the Big Three ( Milans. Juventus) in Italy, players are not that likely to be called up for their national teams.

Peru - well they didn't qualify for a WC anyway.

A big part of a cohesive team unit is identifying as part of  that team. Souttar and Boyle weren't selected by Scotland, yet have turned out to be handy Socceroos. It might surprise a few reading this, but  neither make my Socceroo starting eleven ATM - unless we play against very tall teams.

Have to admit I was very, very impressed with Circati for his Socceroo debut. Good tackler and comfortable on the ball, using both sides of the body well. Again he is another from  the Bos cohort. I agree, I would have selected him for  the Asian Cup instead of Deng. Although Arnie loves Souttar for his leadership and aerial prowess, I prefer a CB combo of Rowles and Circati.

Irvine and Metcalfe are hard working midfielders, excellent when the other team has the ball, good ball winners, both terrific athletes with good endurance, and in Irvine's case, he has terrific game sense. However, neither are the midfield technicians we need to play a possession game in tight spaces through the midfield against good teams.

From what I've seen of Robertson, although very limited, he has that ability. However, so do Hrustic ( a quality technician, but lacks game sense and vision, and sufficient  ball winning capacity ), O'Neill, Baccus, Hollman, and possibly a  whole lot of  new, younger midfielders I don't know ( haven't seen Yazbek yet).

As soon as Robertson and Circati walked through the door into the camp, Arnie said he knew that were at a different level technically and are for the future. Robertson wasn't even playing until March and still got opportunities against Ecuador and Argentina. It's just a taster to let them know that we want them and to show them the culture because they will be pivotal players in this cycle and beyond. Robertson and Circati not coming to every camp and staying at their clubs and has been some of the best decisions they've made. Circati missing the NZ friendlies in Sept 2022 when he knew he was on the rise at his club has elevated him to a starting spot and skies the limit now. Similarly with Robertson since he joined Portsmouth has not been with the Roos and has really set himself up nicely for the immediate future. Minutes in Europe at this age for these guys is way more important than a 5 minute cameo off the bench for a random friendly. We will reap the rewards in the future when these players are very good starters at bigger clubs in top 5 leagues.

I also can't wait for the chance for these guys to potentially play the U23 Asian Cup and for us to put on a show of force in Asia. Though I must admit, I think both will probably still miss it which I'm not against it because it's a pivotal point in both of their promotion battles.

Anyways, it's been confirmed that this whole instagram post thing has been overblown.

You can only assume Peru have come knocking because he would never get a look in at England. I agree losing him would be annoying, but he has played half a season of League 1 so far. I don't think he should be displacing Irvine just yet (even if he becomes a better player).

I would also assume Arnie has had discussions with him re his reasons for leaving him out. If he disagreed and had a hissy fit, then maybe he is better off out of the squad.

Ned Zelic quit the Socceroos prematurely after having a hissy fit in the early 2000s. Most of his Socceroo teammates didn't like him much -  thought he was arrogant. Not great for team spirit and cohesion.

This was more to do with paying his own way to play in those games.. now the other blokes did sure... but I dont think people should be forced to pay for their international commitments themselves.

Maybe this is a new tactic for Arnie after seeing Kuol and Arzani break through into socceroos but not really push on... maybe he feels they were brought in too early? He basically had to pick Kuol for WC or Australia would of murdered him.

Maybe this is a new tactic for Arnie after seeing Kuol and Arzani break through into socceroos but not really push on... maybe he feels they were brought in too early? He basically had to pick Kuol for WC or Australia would of murdered him.

Kuol was brought in as a late game impact player e.g Bolter. He's getting some minutes at Volendam in the Eredivisie but realistically Kuol currently has a low floor and average ceiling. He really needs to work on his body and strength, it's his biggest weakness right now. Gets pushed around by defenders. I knew Kuol joining the NT was way too early but I would've done the same thing, but he won't feature consistently for the NT for another 2-4 years in my opinion. Work on his body and ability and hopefully by about 23 years old he will be ready.
