I've recently paid $10 and $20 for a ticket for A L games.

Good value.

What does Australian football do well?

Acquires the target
Waits patiently for a shot
Holds the gun nice and steady
Nice and easy on the trigger
Gently, gently, don't snatch at it. aaand
Blows its own fucking toes off

If you are looking for what we do exceptionally well, as in top ten nations in the world i would say the follpwong

1) average a league crowds are much higher than transfermarkt values would predict. We are actually quite an outlier, tho not as much as the mĺs. I am prepping a post with some data on this. Globally crowd sizes track transfermarkt value closely
2) our national team elo is and has been way higher than you would predict from the number of players getting regular big 5 game time. If you looked at our results you would predict that we have consistently had 6 to 10 players in the big 5 rather than 0 to 2 over the last decade
3) our coaching may not be top ten but i think we might be one of the few coubtries outside europe and south america to produce a coach in the epl?
4) matildas tend to be in the top 10, the a leagues women in probably in the top 10 and probably top ten in crowds and cash. Would need to check
5) we have more bucket men than any other country in the world

As usual I disagree with you Robbo (not on purpose I swear:) )

I dont think we have enough self interest in the game... It should be all about the club, above everything else... That would form the sort of rivalry every other country around the world thrives on... When you have people who are "fans of the sport in general but I dont have a team I follow" it sort of kills any chance of building any real connection.... at least in my opinion.

We just see things differently, while I don't disagree about passionate club fans like you are football fans, there are also fans of football.
While I love Sydney FC with passion, I also appreciate good football when played against us.
If Socceroos ever played Portugal, I would want Jedinak to smash Ronaldo, but I would be able to appreciate how good the Portuguese side & wished we could play like them.
I have mates like you (STH Melb fan), really strong Liverpool fans, Liverpool over everything, local football, England, English players, they can't appreciate a player like Bellingham, because he choose not to play for them, they are so blind one eye. They only see the bad calls that goes against them, never see the bad ones go for them, Liverpool only team with injuries, Liverpool only team playing young players.
See the difference they are club fans & blinded & they miss so much, whereas I'm a football fan, when I was in Russia watching Socceroos playing France, my wife asked why I was taking photos of all the French players, I said because they were some of the best players in the world.

hahaha your mate sounds a pretty ordinary Greek Liverpool fan to me. HAHAHAHAAHAH  I know exactly the type.

I too appreciate beautiful play and players and, although Im not a huge Belljngham fan, its not because he didnt sign in Anfield, I just prefer a differnt type of player... At the moment, outside of Liverpool players, I like Saka, Oedegard, sometimes Martinelli, Foden, Ake, Isak and Almiron from Newcastle ... et c etc etc... I too am a fan of foootball, but what I think we lack here is the "religiousness" of the game they have overseas... Portugal as much as any other place, where the club is the club is the club .... and thats all that counts...  Thats what drives thousands of fans to go and watch EVERY week, not just old farts like you and I admiring players... do you get what I mean?

This is not stating you are wrong. we just different.
If for example the NST is a success & takes over & is the top tier of football & we are getting 30-40K a game & producing Socceroos at the highest levels, I would be willing to see that even if that meant SFC was discarded.
I want football to succeed in this country more than my club. But that just me.
That's why my sole interest in PL (apart from watching best teams in the world & Liverpool are in top 3 in world IMO) is Ange, I like to see Aussies succeed despite seeing my team Derby wallowing.

Yeah but that is implying that just because I want my club to succeed I dont want Australian football to, that it is somehow mutually exclusive... I dont agree with that.

Its admirable that you will watch the NST if it "takes over" the Aleague but I guess you wont pick a club to support nor attend is that right? If thats the case you and I are EXCACTLY doing the same thing...

I also think we have some of the most loyal fans with all we go through, that applies to a league and nsl fans
Unfortunately the fans take it out on the players complaining about the roos and arnie as well as ange before him when they really are doing remarkably well with the cattle available (also the players are doing well too given their abilities)

The reality is, if the fa split from the a leagues like the crawford report sugggested from year 1 we have 2 divisions with p and r by now and we woukd have produced much better players

Not sure you can judge that here mate... Loyalty is tested in the good times AND the bad.

When we have clubs relegated to the third tier and retaining their numbers and loyalty then perhaps we can compare with the rest of the world.

As it stands the APL clubs know, without a shadow of a doubt, their fan base would disappear overnight of they where ever tested in the crucible of sporting endeavour.

It happened to the NSL clubs, who 20 years later are struggling to survive... in this we are unique, definitely NOT loyal.

How many countries have a dozen fully professional teams that didn't exist 20 years ago?
Given how little media coverage we get, that the A League still exists is a positive, and it's pulliing in new fans each year.

The AL must have peaked in crowds just before the Lowy World Cup push.  I think the AL received pretty good coverage in the wider media then. The AL coverage    seems much less in the broader media, which is a negative.

The standard one pitch has improved, which is  a positive.

I think there might be more  promising young players aged 20 and under than previous AL eras, which  is  a positive.

Another positive is  Aus being a part of the Asian  Confederation. It has provided plenty of tough games.  Also, Asian football may be improving relative to the rest of the world. This helps Aus, despite more tough  matches. This makes it harder to qualify for big tournaments, but if we qualify Aus is battle hardened.

I think we can produce good atmosphere's in games.. Uruguay 05, AC Final 2015.

We just stamp out active support instantly.... see the RBB. If we made a-league games proper events with active support allowed. More people would go.

Its chicken and egg scenario mate... Young blokes want the type of active support that families and mums wont ever want.... APL wants a sanitised half way house in between which isnt achievable (unless they start with the MLS chansawing logs garbage and Star wars rounds)

Whats Australian football does well is alienate the wrong people.

Who mentioned "ultras"? thats just what the esshays here see on youtube videos and want to emulate... Fact is support differs all around the world, but the one thing Eastern Europe, Germany, Italy, Spain, England, Scotland, Africa, South America, Middle East and most of Asian leagues have in common is that the crowd that rocks up, sings the songs, burns the flares or smoke bombs or whatever and drinks the beers is predominately male and 20s-50s.. Definitely NOT family friendly....

And they are the fans who spend that bit extra on another drink or pie or souva (etc.), so the clubs should be wanting them to turn up, not the mum's and dad's who can't afford the extras.

Australian football complains about Australian football really well.

I don’t see it’s any different for any other country’s supporters.
Its passion in many varied ways more than anything else.
Everyone wants their NT to lift and play above themselves.
Club level you live and breath it weekly.

robbos there is always one eyed supporters as we well know as explained about your mates - in my own playing group there is 3 of them still carrying on about United’s treble class of 92 yadda yadda and boast their league titles - any other club doesn’t match up.
How they are their loss - can’t even give a LFC player credit.
Your mates having an issue with Bellingham is ridiculous.
We were never in the ball game - media beat up.
As for me I luv LFC but sure admire opposing players how can’t you not admire a top player from whoever they play for but that’s me.
Even admire cr7 career as much as I can’t stand his persona whereas Messi is the complete package on the pitch and off.

Anyway viva Oz football I’m dieing for a proper league and NST will take over my NPL attention onwards in the hope more youth development moves forward and Clubs with history grow again they thoroughly deserve.

MCG what do we as a game do well ?
Shoot ourselves in both feet more than anything else sadly.
Cant leverage enough having the largest Jnr participation.
Cant have all our Feds aligned.
Cant unite us.
A real shame for its all there to put the pieces together.

Australian football does a good job and sanitising the sport in line with the other sporting codes and not embracing any point of difference.

What Australian football does better than anywhere else nepotism!
Look how many of the past Socceroo's have kids getting opportunities in professional teams. Mark my words, none of them will turn out to be any good whatsoever.

One thing Aussie football nails is fostering a tight-knit community. Whether you're playing, spectating, or even just chatting about it, there's this undeniable sense of camaraderie that's hard to find elsewhere.

The new coaching system is very good in Australia, given Aus is a distant outpost in world football.

I'm not sure how many coaches here coached  pre 2008 and attended  coaching courses? Then moved into the newer coaching practices? There has been a revolution in coaching.

Credit to Rob  Baan and Han Berger for setting  up a national system. It has value added to national team performance - given football is a lower priority sport, with Aus media dominated by other sports at senior level, we aren't doing too badly.
