I thought this was very harsh

What do you do though?

Suggest some wording that would allow that that then doesn't just move the argument 100mm back or forward.

Not having a go here just wondering how you could word it because 10mm is as good as 1m.

Now that all of Matchday 2 is completed, here's the full "scenarios" (solely looking at first and second) from UEFA:

Group A

23 June: Switzerland (4) vs Germany (6), Scotland (1) vs Hungary (0)

Germany are through to the round of 16 and confirmed in the top two. They will win the group if they avoid defeat against Switzerland.

Switzerland will be through to the round of 16 if they avoid defeat against Germany or Scotland fail to beat Hungary. If Switzerland lose and Scotland win they will be split on overall goal difference, then overall goals scored, then disciplinary points, then European Qualifiers rankings. Switzerland will win the group if they beat Germany.

Scotland will be through to the round of 16 in second place if they beat Hungary and Switzerland lose to Germany, provided Scotland finish ahead of Switzerland in the criteria described above. Scotland will be unable to reach the round of 16 if they lose.

Hungary cannot finish in the top two and will be unable to reach the round of 16 if they do not beat Scotland.

Group B

24 June: Albania (1) vs Spain (6), Croatia (1) vs Italy (3)

Spain are through to the round of 16 as group winners.

Italy will be through to the round of 16 as group runners-up if they avoid defeat against Croatia. Italy will be unable to reach the round of 16 if they lose and Albania beat Spain.

Albania will be through to the round of 16 as group runners-up if they beat Spain and Croatia beat Italy providing Albania finish ahead of Croatia on overall goal difference or then overall goals scored, or then disciplinary points or then European Qualifiers rankings. Albania will be unable to reach the round of 16 if they lose, or if they draw and Croatia beat Italy.

Croatia will be through to the round of 16 as group runners-up if they beat Italy and Albania do not beat Spain (if Albania also win, Croatia and Albania will be split for second and third place by the above criteria). Croatia will be unable to reach the round of 16 if they lose, or if they draw and Albania avoid defeat.

Group C

25 June: England (4) vs Slovenia (2), Denmark (2) vs Serbia (1)

England will be through to the round of 16 if they avoid defeat against Slovenia or Denmark do not beat Serbia. England will win the group if they beat Slovenia or England draw and Denmark do not win. If England draw and Denmark win they will be split for first and second place on overall goal difference, then overall goals scored, then disciplinary points, then European Qualifiers rankings. England cannot finish lower than third.

Denmark will be through to the round of 16 if they beat Serbia. If Denmark and Slovenia both draw, they will be split for second and third place by the criteria described above, similarly first and second place if Denmark and Slovenia both win (or Denmark and England, if Denmark win and England draw), or third and fourth place if Denmark and Slovenia both lose. Denmark will be unable to reach the round of 16 if they lose and Slovenia avoid defeat.

Slovenia will be through to the round of 16 if they beat England. Slovenia will win the group if they win and Denmark do not. If Slovenia and Denmark both win, they will be split for first and second place by the criteria described above, similarly second and third place if they both draw, or third and fourth place if they both lose, or Slovenia and Serbia for third or fourth place if Slovenia lose and Serbia draw.

Serbia will be through to the round of 16 if they beat Denmark and Slovenia do not beat England (if Serbia and Slovenia win, Serbia will be third behind England on head-to-head record). If Serbia draw and Slovenia lose they will be split for third and fourth place by the criteria described above. Serbia will be unable to reach the round of 16 if they lose, or if they draw and Slovenia avoid defeat.

Group D

25 June: Netherlands (4) vs Austria (3), France (4) vs Poland (0)

Netherlands will be through to the round of 16 (in the top two) if they avoid defeat against Austria. Netherlands will win the group if they win and France do not, or if Netherlands draw and France lose. Netherlands will finish second if they draw and France win. If Netherlands and France both win or both draw, they will be split for first place on overall goal difference, then overall goals scored, then disciplinary points, then European Qualifiers rankings. Similarly if Netherlands and France both lose, they will be split for second and third place by the same criteria.

France will be through to the round of 16 (in the top two) if they avoid defeat against Poland or if Austria do not beat Netherlands. France will win the group if they win and Netherlands do not. If France and Netherlands both win or both draw they will be split for first and second place by the above criteria, similarly for second and third place if they both lose.

Austria will be through to the round of 16 (in the top two) if they beat Netherlands. Austria will win the group if they win and France do not. If Austria draw and France lose, Austria will finish third behind France on head-to-head record.

Poland are unable to reach the round of 16 and will finish fourth.

Group E

26 June: Slovakia (3) vs Romania (3), Ukraine (3) vs Belgium (3)

Romania will be through to the round of 16, in the top two, if they avoid defeat by Slovakia. Romania will win the group if they win and Belgium do not beat Ukraine. If both games are drawn, Romania would finish first if Belgium have not scored more goals in their draw. Romania will be unable to reach the round of 16 if they lose and Ukraine avoid defeat.

Belgium will be through to the round of 16, in the top two, if they avoid defeat by Ukraine. Belgium will win the group if they win and Slovakia do not beat Romania, or if both games are drawn and Belgium score more goals in their draw than Romania. Belgium will be unable to reach the round of 16 if they lose and Romania avoid defeat.

Slovakia will be through to the round of 16, in the top two, if they beat Romania. Slovakia will finish third if they draw. Slovakia will finish first if they win and Ukraine do not beat Belgium. Slovakia will be unable to reach the round of 16 if they lose and Belgium avoid defeat.

Ukraine will be through to the round of 16, in the top two, if they beat Belgium. Ukraine will finish first if they win and Romania do not beat Slovakia. Ukraine will finish third if they draw and the other game is not drawn. Ukraine will be unable to reach the round of 16 if they lose and Romania avoid defeat, or if both games are drawn.

Group F

26 June: Georgia (1) vs Portugal (6), Czechia (1) vs Türkiye (3)

Portugal are through to the round of 16 as group winners.

Türkiye will be through to the round of 16, as group runners-up, if they avoid defeat against Czechia. Türkiye will be unable to reach the round of 16 if they lose and Georgia beat Portugal.

Czechia will be through to the round of 16, as group runners-up, if they beat Türkiye and Georgia do not beat Portugal. If Czechia and Georgia both win, they will be split for second and third place on overall goal difference, then overall goals scored, then disciplinary points, then European Qualifiers rankings. Czechia will finish third if they draw and Georgia do not win. Czechia will be unable to reach the round of 16 if they lose.

Georgia will be through to the round of 16, as group runners-up, if they beat Portugal and Czechia beat Türkiye, provided Georgia finish ahead of Czechia on the criteria described above. Georgia will be unable to reach the round of 16 if they lose, or if they draw and Czechia avoid defeat.

Based off current standings, here is the knockout stage for the Round of 16. Only Spain and Portugal are locked into these positions at the moment.
1B v 3E - Spain v Slovakia
1A v 2C - Germany v Denmark
1F v 3C - Portugal v Slovenia
2D v 2E - France v Belgium
1E v 3B - Romania v Albania
1D v 2F - Netherlands v Turkey

So going through possible third places group by group:

Group A: If Scotland v Hungary ends in a draw, neither team can progress to the knockouts in 3rd place, leaving Group A out. A result either way may see them qualify (depending on other results.

Group B: Spain is guaranteed top, and is most likely to defeat Albania. In that instance, Albania will be knocked out, unless Czechia AND Georgia BOTH lose their final match. In the event that happens, quite a lot will hinge on the Italy v Croatia match. A defeat for Croatia condemns them to fourth, whereas a draw will see them jump Albania into third (but also be ranked as 4th/6 - as things stand), so would be in the same waiting game for Czechia and Georgia's results. A win for Croatia would see them jump into second spot, with Italy now occupying third place in the group (possibly progressing).

Group C: Denmark v Serbia will be the main deciding game. The general prediction is that England will defeat Slovenia (leaving England to top the group, with Slovenia most likely missing out on 2 points and a negative goal difference - unless Croatia, Albania AND Scotland all lose their final match, while they await for Czechia AND Georgia to both lose for their benefit).

Group D: This group has the least to play for, as Poland are eliminated as they cannot finish 3rd in their group, and with the top 3 already on 3 pts with a positive goal difference, very likely this group qualifies. However all 3 spots are open here. One would assume a Netherlands and France victory here, meaning whoever tops the group would be the team that wins by the most goals (and if it's the same amount, it will be Netherlands due to more goals scored). This would leave Austria in third.

Group E: Wide-open group that I'm not going to speculate on, other than the third place team in this group SHOULD qualify for the knockouts. The only speculation I will say is - Ukraine MUST win, as a draw against Belgium will only be enough to secure third place IF Slovakia v Romania ends in a result either way (and they'll have negative goal difference too).

Group F: The other 5 third placed teams will be eagerly watching this group, as them progressing hinges a lot on Portugal and Turkey defeating Georgia and Czechia respectively. If this happens, this will be the other group not to qualify. Portugal is guaranteed top though, so Czechia v Turkey is the match to watch. Czechia MUST win to progress (although they can advance with a draw, provided Georgia, Scotland, Albania AND Croatia all LOSE their final match).

My predictions? I'm quite certain Group A and F miss out as things currently stand. Group B and F are almost interchangeable, but will await results over the next two nights as things will almost be set in stone then. I think I'm going to put the results of the last time each nation played eachother in the the ultra.zone predictor and share the results of each group for the lulz.

EDIT: Those results would be:

Group A
Switzerland 3-3 Germany
Scotland 1-0 Hungary

Group B
Albania 1-2 Spain
Croatia 1-1 Italy

Group C
England 1-0 Slovenia
Denmark 3-0 Serbia

Group D
Netherlands 2-0 Austria
France 3-1 Poland

Group E
Slovakia 1-1 Romania
Ukraine v Belgium (FIRST MEETING)

Group F
Georgia 0-2 Portugal
Czechia 1-2 Turkey

These results would knock Group B and F out (as any result with Ukraine v Belgium and these results will still have Group E qualify), and leave the following fixtures (I will assume a Belgium 1-0 victory in this instance)

Spain v Slovakia
Germany v Denmark
Portugal v Scotland
France v Romania
Belgium v Slovenia
Netherlands v Turkey
England v Austria
Switzerland v Italy

Like your summaries NCB !

Those possible or say likely fixtures not hard picking winners there on current results.
Pretty much winners on the left but for the last 2 I’m going the Austrians and Italia !

MCG is agree those VAR offsides are damn harsh as.
I know as the official Muz says 10mm  could be 1M.
IMO a +/- 1/2 meter how it’s worded provides that bit of the old benefit of the doubt kind of outcome using the tech.

Yep, winners will go through in either first or second regardless, but who finishes where will depend on the combination of the two teams winning (due to being head to head)

If Slovakia and Ukraine win, Ukraine top the group, Slovakia second, Belgium third, Romania fourth
If Slovakia and Belgium win, Slovakia top the group, Belgium second, Romania third, Ukraine fourth
If Romania and Belgium win, Belgium top the group, Romania second, Ukraine third, Slovakia fourth
If Romania and Ukraine win, Romania top the group, Ukraine second, Slovakia third, Belgium fourth
If Romania v Slovakia ends in a draw, with Belgium v Ukraine ending in a result, Romania will finish second, with Slovakia third. The winner of Belgium v Ukraine in first, and the loser eliminated in fourth.
If Belgium v Ukraine ends in a draw, with Romania v Slovakia ending in a result, Belgium will finish second, with Ukraine third. The winner of Romania v Slovakia in first, and the loser eliminated in fourth.
If all games end in a draw, the table remains as is - unless the Belgium v Ukraine game ends with the teams scoring one more goal over the other game (eg, 2-2 and 1-1) - then in that instance, Romania and Belgium will decide first and second in disciplinary points, and if that is tied, then Belgium will progress in first place due to higher ranking in qualifying. If the Belgium v Ukraine game ends with 2+ goals higher in a draw for both (eg, 3-3 and 1-1), then Belgium will progress in first place, with Romania in second, Slovakia in third, and Ukraine eliminated in fourth.

I think I've covered all scenarios there.

Yes he has been making comments similar part of the season, I like he’s ol skool in many ways and offside has become a tech anvil of unseen millimetres.
I agree no one would be the wiser and accepted they are goals and onside by a fraction.
You got accept the ref and lines eyes or coms when in question.
Football doesn’t need this tech scrutiny on offside.

No one 'reasonable' would be, yes.
Unfortunately, this has become scrutinised to the nth degree by the media and by fans on social media in this age of technology, and they want 156% accuracy on these decisions. As long it goes the way of their team.

The scrutiny and outrage on this is very much a 'reap what you sow' moment to me for all those influential people in football who would lambast referees for the smallest of things that didn't go their way

If only coaches had the balls to drop their striker to reserve grade for hitting the post when missing the last minute winner in a 3-3 draw, despite scoring a hat-trick in the same game.

With some of these tight offside calls it makes me think why Arsene Wenger wants to change the offside rule to make it easier for the attacker.

Couple of years back I was at a pub quiz and one of the all time football questions came up. Imagine the screen flicking over and you've got everyone's favourite walking habit maradonna up there. Everyone in the room is thinking hand of god. Table next to mine with the resident poms are biting their lips. But the ecstasy of a "question that everyone can answer" turns to dismay when the slide ends with: "name the goal keeper!"

I keep thinking of that moment with the VAR and how the next generation will not-live their lives and what their stumper of a pub quiz will be like

"this is a photo of the 2040 world cup final. it was quite an agreeable occasion where nobody was disappointed. the match was decided after offside was ruled by the VAR. on the 15th pass, it was determined that the attacking player has a little hair sticking out of his foreskin which put him off side. name the fucking legend in the VAR room"

Scotland with a much more focused display so far. I'd say it's got to do with Hungary not beigg as good as the first two opponents. More space afforded. Similar to Australia Tunisia battle.

Scotland hearts broken at death by Hungary goal. Scotland with dome half chances but nothing in the end. Hungary not much better but have sorted 3 points to give themselves hope.

Very cruel ending

The passion they have for the game and the scenes of all of the stadium belted out flower of scotland...
I do hope better times are ahead for them

Could list a million things wrong with Scotland line ups. Felt Cooper could've been a solid traditional right full back to keep attacks at bay. Adams was so bad. Ralston actually gave it a go tonight but was way off pace. McGregor is the most slow witted footballer I've seen.

My point proven.

Agree grazor Scots bring an aura, 90+10 omg.

Johnsz yep Ralston really put in.
i actually wonder how Adam’s is a epl striker.
Once again Scot’s lack any goals from their front men same occurred last euro for them.
