+xSo the acls start about 1 month before our season? So if you play finals and acl you have an 8 month season which is ok Except ACLE is the most lucrative comp we have and we're starting behind the 8-ball during our pre-season. You can pretty much put a pencil through being able to run out the first three matches.

it took 8 games last year for ccm to get back to where they were. Can they have a bunch of friendlies?

It's crazy to think in this day of age the season doesn't start sooner, it just puts the clubs competing in Asia behind the 8-ball whilst the other teams in Asia are in season and fully fit ready to go.
The Mariners would need to go on a deep Aus. Cup just to maintain a good level of fitness to go against the some of the best in Asia.
So much for a 'football focused' league when the actions from the APL don't seem to reflect it.

+xit took 8 games last year for ccm to get back to where they were. Can they have a bunch of friendlies? Last year they were knocked out of the Australia Cup on penalties by Sydney FC. This season they start pre-season next Monday - 44 days after the Grand Final. They have lost Balard, Barcellos, Hall, Kasalovic, Reec, Torres and Vukovic since then and only signed Mauragis. However they still have at this stage 11 of the Grand Final match day squad (including 8 starters and the two goal scoring subs) so if they can strengthen the squad and have a few friendlies before the first Australia Cup game in just over a month they should be ok. The real test will come on August 16th when they find out who they play in the early rounds of the ACLE. They need to avoid the J1 and K1 teams in the first couple of games or things will get real ugly real quickly

Yeah it's not great. Mariners have Heidelberg straight up. If they win that then they have no matches for another three weeks. Not helpful. With their squad changes, I'm not holding my breath on a RD16 win. But if they do win, it's another two and a half weeks off. Not helpful. The third Cup match is three or four days before their ACLE match, so the players will either be knackered against fit opposition or rested from the Cup, which would mean no match for three weeks, again. Neither helpful. Same as above, the second ACLE match is three to four days after an unlikely Cup match. Not helpful. Then it's Cup final> two weeks off > Round 1 > three days prep for Asia again. Not helpful. I'm fine with the three day breaks, that's par for the course in continental football. But every year I keep saying we should be kicking off the league during AFL bye week pre-finals, no AFL matches and 10 of the 18 teams' season is over. Play all the low drawing matches then, blow out the cobwebs and prepare for Asia. A few more Cup matches can be squeezed in before then too. It's decent money in Asia now, if we choose to take it seriously.
