If there was nothing to be gained there was no reason to have done it.

They were after an unfair advantage and they got taught what cheats get in the Olympic code.

Hard for the team to cop that given they would have had nothing to do with it - but it does send a very strong message. Unfortunately the message may not reach the ears of the nations who still endorse systemic cheating.

Now - how do we get the Olympics officials to recognise diving in football as cheating...

It's an extreme penalty, but I guess if you don't come down hard, every team will have drones flying over every opposition training session. They would have known it's illegal when they did it. They will surely appeal the severity, which will mean no one will know what's needed to go through in any group until the appeal gets heard. 

Really making an example of them. 6 points kills them. What ‘secret’ info could they possibly discover from drone footage anyway
