fact is doesn't matter who writes a great perspective article and not. Results matter right and then IF your employer decides/decided long ago it seems not to re sign your contract thats it....what other storey is there to read. All I see is a spiralling aging Lioness pit lacking alot in defense and heads in the sky of their fame due to the press and yes sell out crowd fandom. I look forward whats to become in the after wash and ahead + murdoch joey lynch and rugari spin added for the hoot...... Big problem when a team is lost due to 1player but I think thats where the W game is atm espcially ours, a MIA Kerr.

+xSaid it before and I'll say it until the cows come home. We did well at the WC in spite of Gustavsson and not because of him. I posted an article from the Australian about his departure. It's in the Matildas thread if anyone wants to read it. +xSaid it before and I'll say it until the cows come home. We did well at the WC in spite of Gustavsson and not because of him. I would far rather read Joey Lynch’s take on it all, at least he’s rational.

Missing one of the world's best strikers was probably a bigger problem than we thought or was acknowledged.

His contract finished with that game so saying he was sacked is rubbish.Fair enough results under him were up and down but as Davstar pointed out a 4th at the WC and at the previous Olympics.Without Kerr the team at times looked lost.
Tony's biggest problem was that he was not able to overcome the power of the sisterhood hence he picked Van Egmond and Polkinghorne who were well past it

+x+xI wish him well overall he did good job it is a results business and deserved the axe after this but he had a good WC and gave the nation some good moments we won't forget Australian fans are harsh critics but he gets credit for me I wish him well Sorry mate, can’t agree really. He went to the Olympics and parked the bus against USA from the kickoff !! Once we were 2-0 down we had a go and nearly got a draw. All his dribble about playing through the press was a dream of some sort to tell us what we wanted to hear as was his press conferences, And his dribble about never say die had nothing to do with him. Good riddance Tony, you destroyed our dreams and the girls dreams well before this Olympics, that is because your emotional facts are we came 4th last Olympics and 4th in the WWC these are national team bests Someone else 'might' do better but chances are they will do worse a lot worse We are not as good as we think we are, can almost garentee if we have a bad run with the next coach questions will be raised over why we sacked Tony so quickly I understand why he was sacked but the players coming out moaning about him now prior to that they moaned about Alan need to have a look at themselves they ultimately didnt turn up

+xTo quote from the article "Gustavsson deserves credit for turning Clare Hunt, Cortnee Vine and Kyra Cooney-Cross into mainstays of the Matildas set-up and backing Mackenzie Arnold as his first-choice goalkeeper." Certainly Hunt and KCC are now an integral part of the national team, and deservedly so. Vine is not yet there as an international player, and I'm not sure bringing in your second choice keeper (Arnold) to replace an ageing and not-so-great keeper (Williams) can be considered a coaching masterstroke. So Gustavsson really has only developed two starting level players over his four year tenure. Not a pass mark in my book. Add to that his continual apparent belief that van Egmond is a solution to a problem, rather than seeing what she actually is (a problem looking for a solution, where the solution is an easy one, i.e., don't select her), and my assessment is that Gustavsson as Matilda's coach has not been a success. The relative success of 4th placings at the last Olympics and the World Cup has been much more due to the players efforts with some one-off good performances, and a fair sprinkling of good fortune, rather than his coaching prowess. Could not of said it better!! And many of my coaching friends see it the same. Hopefully a new coach will shed the Egg completely and one or two others…..and Ellie needs to time on the bench to bring in Torpey or Grant. Ellie has never been a great passer and is a poor crosser. If she can’t cross by now ??

Time for a new approach, the style of play isn’t as conductive for success at international level with the amount of running they do. Need to take the next step in an ever growing and competitive women’s game.
