Burns names O'Neill and McLaren as the stand outs... big of him seeing that O'Neill is really after his spot, rather than pinch hitting at centre back!

Quote:
Jacob Burns' South African Tour Diary - fourth and final entry

Final tour game - SuperSport United 2-0 Perth Glory

It was definitely our best performance of the tour against arguably our toughest opposition.

The team that started the game dominated for long periods, but unfortunately we copped a goal from a free kick which came very much against the run of play.

All in all we played well and although it wasn't the end result we were after, there were many positives to take out of it.

The fact that we created the majority of the scoring chances against a side of that strength speaks volumes about our performance and it was a good finish to the trip in that respect.

SuperSport are definitely a good side as they showed by beating Manchester City a few weeks ago, but we more than matched them for long periods of the game.

It was also great to see Steve Pantelidis get some game time for the first time on the trip, having recovered from his Achilles operation.

Overall assessment of the tour

The quality of the opposition that we played against and the minutes of football that we got into our legs will definitely steer us in the right direction as we continue to build towards the new A-League season.

These teams have great individual players, really strong, talented guys and they've certainly given us a great test both individually and as a team.

It's such a valuable experience to come over here and play these match-fit teams that are ready to go into their season which starts this weekend.

There's been a huge turnover in players at the club and we had a lot of young guys coming on their first overseas trip, so it's been an incredible experience for them.

Mixed in with that, to come away on a team trip like this and do all the community stuff in between the games is great for morale and has really brought us together as a group.

Along the way, we've played some really good football.

We're only four weeks into our pre-season and some people will just look at the results, but it's really all about the performances and we've played well and worked on aspects of our game that we need to build upon throughout the rest of pre-season and into the new campaign.

The more games you play as a team with so many new players, the better and you benefit even more from playing those games against quality, match-sharp opposition.

There's no doubt in my mind that we're going to benefit massively from this trip.

Stand-out performers
In terms of players who have stood out on the trip, I don't think you can go past Brandon O'Neill. He's just carried on from his outstanding performances in the two friendlies we had before we came to South Africa and he's more than held his own in central defence.Jamie Maclaren has also done very well. He's shown his pace, built up some good combinations and been very unlucky not to have scored a few goals. We've had some players out, so we've been sharing the load and (Head Coach) Alistair Edwards has been experimenting with different players in different positions to see where they fit best.Danny Vukovic had to come back a little bit early from his knee problem due to an injury to Jack Duncan and he did really well. The senior lads in the team have also played a really good mentoring role, using their experience to guide the younger guys around the pitch.

SuperSport United 2-0 Perth Glory

Sent an email to the membership team.

The membership teams current priority is relocating members who got moved because of the eastern stand upgrade, these members have a renewal rate of 98%.

The club has not really started renewing other members or offering memberships to the public.

Yeah, I renewed my membership yesterday. I was platinum last year due to the stadium redevelopment but now going back to the eastern side in gold. The process took a while though, the membership team is under the pump at the moment and they also said memberships are going crazy at the moment.

From the article above, didnt like that we needed Vukovic to come back early from a knee injury. Took a big risk there!

Well GloryB, seems like O'Neill COULD be the big mover this season. Going by these early pre-season reports. He's been with the senior squad a couple seasons now, having joined as a quite young lad! But finally he might get more of a look in, this season?!

And with upfront, no doubt PG's squad is still heavily reliant on Smeltz. He's the ONLY senior striker in the squad!

Goals in this early pre-season aren't so important, especially with standard opposition they're facing at the moment. It's as they say, performance, learning tasks, improving team play/gelling, fitness with the ball etc... that all the coaches talk about.

And it sounds as if, within that, MacLaren and co ARE creating some good chances. And THAT'S what you want to see. The more they do that, the more likely some will turn into goals. Smeltz will hopefully come in, in due time, though. The squad's resources, both depth and experience wise are limited with Smeltz out. That may leave too much, too soon, pressure on new signing MacLaren, Makeche and Harold too.

Ahhh this all makes sense. Glory certainly have 'special circumstances' I did not think of that!

BTW -=GLoRiOuS=- when they said 'memberships are going crazy' I presume they were referring to the 'membership renewals'? Because as Iridium1010 suggested they haven't opened up the wider process to the public or what not, yet?

And I guess this also explains WHY there is no info on the official website section for it, let alone any buzz surrounding it on their Social Media sites!

Hmm yeah! Don't PG have a third goalkeeper?! IF NOT - There are always some NYL Gkers you can try? Granted, I presume that the NYLers aren't with this tour squad? Devon Spence and Jordan Franken seem to be the NYL Goalkeepers, but I also gathered (Maybe incorrectly) that the likes of Spence may be 'too old' this NYL season, like how Quaqua (sp) and Roux would've been? The NYL squad aren't announced till a bit later, so the NYL squad listed on Wikipedia is out of date.

Vukovich coming back a week early is that big of a concern, he was always going to play against supersport. Alistair said it in many interviews that Panta and Vuka would be back for that match. We have Devon Spence, and Jordan Franken would could have filled in had it been a local game but those lads weren't in the squad that travelled to S.A.

Amen.

They are however improving every year I have noticed over the last few years.
What they really lack at the moment is social interaction and social media presence.

Someone said earlier that Scott Jamieson should run the twitter account. I would be for that 100% he is a quality twitterati.

Having done zero research into the matter, I was just in this thread and thought I'd ask, but is there a financial member system with the glory? Or something along the lines of being a member without having an allocated seat? Living Sydney makes it difficult to get to many games

Before I get corrected on my phrasing, by 'senior' striker, I meant 'experienced' striker. Smeltz brings experience in bags. Dodd is technically about, the change room/for advice, but out with injury, obviously.

As far as I can see, the other options are MacLaren (Leading alternative), Makeche, Harold (He can be utilised wide too) and even Sidnei (More likely to be utilised wide or behind?)?

I guess even Sidnei COULD be used up there IF a change up was needed. That MAY not be at the expense of where else he may play, depending on form of others? We have plenty more players capable of playing wide attacking midfield/wing in this squad (Includ Harold, De Silva, Zahra etc MacLaren played wide in a front three with the Young Socceroos)!

Though Edwards seems to, quite rightly, have a bit of faith in MacLaren's talents . I would not be soo worried if MacLaren sees a bit of opportunity, especially as the season progresses. Gun young talent, scored alot of goals with Blackburn Reserves over the seasons as an old Aussie Abroad! Very promising and we saw insights into his finishing ability via his Young Socceroos appearances (Good finishes/goals v NZ and Turkey!).

Just can't be too sure where Edwards will utilise them, not at the moment anyway? Does he intend for Sidnei to play LW, RW, AM, upfront, all/some of the above? And I'm fairly sure, when Glory had an upturn in fortunes, it was when McGarry was shifted up the field in the role behind the striker. Miller and Burns were the DM partnership and later Cordoba-Burns. That's why I'm unsure if McGarry will continue up there where he saw some success or drop back?

You're missing the point. McGarry can play DM, therefore he is depth at DM.

I'd be surprised if McGarry was used anywhere but a holding / link man role this season. I don't think we'll see him behind the striker at all, that will be a job for De Silva or one of the other young attackers.

On the striker depth front, we could do worse than sign/loan Gus Maralunda from Bayswater City - providing all the visa stuff is ok.

Plenty of amateur video of him on Youtube - search Gustavo Giron Maralunda.

He's got decent footskills and a bit of pace, I'm going to watch Bayswater in the state league today so I'll see how he goes again if he's out there. Leading goalscorer two seasons running from memory.

What should be the number one objective for PGFC for Season 2013/14?

26% - Play Finals Football

18% - The development of exciting youth for the future

40% - Win the Hyundai A-League title

16% - Play entertaining football

I think playing entertaining football and development of youth should be our objectives for this season, the others are bonuses imo.

Thoughts?

Fergie utilised McGarry behind the striker didn't he? Just trying to get it straight. I remember him being shifted forward and that co-incided with the team's change in fortunes. But that was a while ago. You may have to enlighten me, but I don't know/recall exactly 'where' Edwards played him, when he came in late this past season?

He played him in both positions I think. There was a lot of switching going on because of Miller/Cordoba/Burns being unavailable at various times too and DdS getting a run. I agree with Dave and that's what it looks like coming out of the South African Tour.

Gus has been touted for awhile. Not sure I'd waste the remaining squad spot (with 4 players that can play there, with Nagai/Sidnei covering if needed) on him but prehaps give him a chance taking up the IR spot for Dodd. Would at least give him a chance to put his foot in the door which is more than he's had before, and we have the VISA spot to allow it.

The people who voted on the website poll (that is what you were talking about?) are delusional. The aim is clearly to develop the youngsters and target 5/6th spot, ergo "play finals". I think 40% of fans are going to be in for a rude shock come season time

I'm inclined to think you're right.

Gus today scored 2 goals, but he's the poaching fox-in-the-box type who hangs on the last defender and then uses an explosive sprint and good footskills to his advantage. Not sure that fits the 'every player works the field' methods the Glory have used under Edwards.

Thanks for that and if I understand correctly, ANYBODY can vote on those polls on the official website. So I doubt ALL of the voters were 'Glory fans' - For instance I've visited just about every one of the A-League clubs' official web pages. Haven't voted on any of the polls, but it doesn't stop others doing so!

Hence might even be some fans from overseas and even non-A-League fans voting - both who may be relatively ignorant and have a distorted view based on that ignorance.

Same can be said for most voters in MOST polls - Including Election-related ones. ;) ;) :(

[quote=GloryB]Burns names O'Neill and McLaren as the stand outs... big of him seeing that O'Neill is really after his spot, rather than pinch hitting at centre back!

From what I have heard is the Edwards sees his future at CB.

He has been alot stronger and confident at CB then expected and he has played alot of minutes in that position preseason.

He is 179cm and still young enough at 19 (yes he is still only 19 crazy) to learn the position this season, plus he has great foot skills something that sets him apart from Panta.

Maybe Im the only one but I shit myself with fear every single time he tries to dribble out of traffic.

Interesting info about Smeltz and his injury. So he's not going to be available for at least the first 3 matches and the in week 6 is off with the All Whites.

Will be an early test of how good the back up forwards are.

great....we saw the impact of the kiwi games on him last season, he always came back injured. Fingers crossed he has a consistent season.

From the pre season games so far, it looks like Maclaren is the next in line, naturally a striker, followed by Makeche. We dont have much natural striker depth, although probably Sciola can play up there if need be.

Yeah opportunity abounds. We have a flexible rotation of players in that front half and with the tactical approach of Edwards. Youth, energy and dynamism tends to be employed anyway, to press teams and keep moving I guess.

MacLaren seems a favourite. One wonders where Makeche figures in the equation? But his prospects naturally bump up in the rotation. Harold could be utilised too, aswell as wide.

Hopefully more goals can come from the imports like Nagai and Sidnei. Sidnei especially seems a finisher, so he too could be a source of goals. McGarry got forward and scored some, last couple seasons or so too. De Silva may sneak in some too, as he did against Columbia at the U20 World Cup?

The way the side operates, either possession wise or even on the counter, it 'may' not be soo reliant on the one individual to score anyway?
