Most fans who backed Edwards vision didn't expect results this year. just wanted to find out which kids had potential, which didn't and to set in place some good team structure.
I would agree that Edwards was a bit overconfident with what the kids (not just his) could do, but he did try to play to a structure which involved some passing.
If he'd been backed to get rid of Burns and then was backed with money like Lowe was in the Jan transfer window, then I'd reckon we'd be doing better than we are now.
Still, its all a bit theoretical, as Edwards wasn't backed (by Sage or by many of the players) and we are where we are. What I'd like to see is a coach with some vision. Hopefully Lowe has that, but from what I've seen so far, I am still not sure.

Giving Edwards backing to implement a youth policy and control it going forward, whilst flawed in hindsight, was still the bravest thing that the club has done for a long time.
As much as I like Kenny, welcome back to safety, short-termism, and blinkers on for future planning.

To be fair, Cernak can probably be a better player than what we saw. He had no pre-season and came into what can only be described as a midfield that is very disfunctional in attack....

It also doesn't change the fact he signed several young WA players in the form of Davies, Woodcock, Da Silva and Duncan, as well as re-signing Brandon O'Neill. Considering all the good young WA players we missed out on in the past, it was a step in the right direction. In the past, we would've just singed some eastern states hacks. Your anti-Edwards agenda is really getting tiresome. I can accept you don't like him, but in the time he was here, he made a lot of moves in the right direction. Had there not been the fallout over him signing his sons, i'm confident he would be doing a much better job than Lowe.

Mate just as he has an agenda against Edwards Snr it's fair to say you and others have an agenda against anyone who criticizes his tenure. You are right in that fact that Begbie forgot some obvious young WA talent but you are completely wrong about the fall out being over the signing of his sons because it was actually over a whole heap of reasons stemming from the signing of his sons to his lack of tactical skills to his reputed poor training sessions to his poor man management skills so on and so forth. Like I have said in other posts, only here on this forum have I found some support for Alistair Edwards whilst amongst all the Glory supporters I know, both members and nonmembers noone really gave a fuck when he was moved on. We're more perturbed that once again the clubs a laughing stock and appears to be heading nowhere. Thats reality.

I think we are ALL peturbed that once again the clubs a laughing stock and appears to be heading nowhere.
We probably have different views as to why that is, but again, I am sure some of the reasons we all can agree on.
Most fans on here are dying to see a bit of vision, long term thinking and sophistication from the coaching staff and something which actually was focused on applying the recommendations in the Charlesworth report. Most of us on here thought we had a lot more of that under Edwards than we've seen before.
Some of us on here look at who has been around through all the failed past seasons, and the approach that they have taken, and don't have much faith in them (or their philosophies) to lead us out.

Easiest answer to give I think. Also Ali's tactical "ineptitude" managed to get the team into the finals last season.

Ali Edwards had a lot of positives associated with his plans for the club... but ultimately he had 2 massive failings that mean I'm glad we saw the back of him:
1) Clearly didn't have the experience or nous to coach grown men and have the squad on his side. Any manager in any industry needs to be able to do this to be successful, or they shouldn't be a manager. 2) Tactically he was playing a style that basically required the wingers to be absolute superstars to generate any scoring opportunities. Glory either scored 0 or 1 goal every game under him this season, except the 3-0 win over Wellington when Sidnei was unstoppable. There was no play through the middle because of the Burns-McGarry-Edwards trio who were all there to lock up the opposition
Unfortunately, Lowe hasn't fixed the central midfield problem. Marinkovic for me looks too much in a Tim Cahill sort of role looking to get behind the forwards and do his best work in and around the box. That'd be fine if he had Miller and Cordoba behind him, but when he's got Burns and McGarry we're basically playing a 6-0-4 formation and every single attack involves an overlapping full-back and a winger trying to isolate his full-back.
We looked best when Sernas first came on because he was playing much narrower than Zahra or Harold, effectively giving us an extra central midfielder... as Melbourne adjusted to that though we were pushed out of the game again.
Glory are such a mish-mash of styles and strategies, but we don't have the players to make any of them work. If we had a someone up front who could win and hold up the long-balls we could probably keep playing as we are. If we replaced Burns with a proper central (rather than defensive) midfielder alongside McGarry we would instantly look better. If we had Bale and Ronaldo running down each flank then we could afford 3 lock-down central midfielders and still generate scoring chances.
Unfortunately we don't have any of those things. Therefore we're never going to look dangerous with the current squad.

I think it speaks volumes about Perth Glory's management history if our, objectively, most tactically astute manager of the HAL era is considered tactically inept by some supporters.

Fergie was critisied for signing players and not playing them but Edwards was no different. He would tell us the DDS was injured and can't play but he'd be in the Youth team the next day. He signed a 36 year old injury prone CH instead of playing Clisby. so don't give us that crap. Have you ever wondered why nobody followed Edwards out the door? no assistant coach or player decided to walk in support of Ali, now that speaks volumes. He only got a go when Neville did his knee. It was forced upon him. Edwards had a long term vision. I was happy to wait out this season and the next to see the long term youth development bare fruit. Unfortunately he had his shortcoming of not being able to manage full grown sooks and was blind sided by his sons. Glory are right back to square one. An interim coach getting players in at the January transfer window to make a late run for the finals. So sick of this shit. He will get appointed for next year, see that some imports and older minds can do the trick and head down that path. No vision, just short sightedness playing for finals football. Glory badly needs a manager who has a long term view to squad development and playing a brand of football that is at least on par with some of the top 2/4 clubs. Glory each season has an interim coach patching together a squad based on the previous coach's sloppy seconds, trying to play a brand of football that a simpleton could put together with crayons and scrap paper with jonny-come-lately squad members. Sadly, coaches will resort to the easy path of short term results to save their job. Look at Gombau. Adelaide were losing until they finally clicked and are quite formidable at times. Stick with a strategy and it will start to work. I'm just rambling now, but as a long time Glory supporter I have disengaged with the club and no longer go to games as family matters make it an easy excuse. There's little pull for me back to the games with the current mish-mash of ideas, players, coaches, philosophies etc. I hope in the future (maybe post Sage) the club will get its management structure in place and then allow that to flow through to coaching staff and player roster. ATM all this rubbish appears to me to be from the top all the way through to the players. Like a cancerous tumour, Glory need to go under the knife, have chaemo and come out stronger the other side. All that has been done for the past 9 seasons is treatment with alternative medicines and ignoring warning signs hoping they'll go away. Here endeth the rant.

Begbie, while you obsess over the mystical idea that some of us are joined at the hip to Edwards, you miss the elephant that is the club's continual ineptitude and short-term thinking. It's never their fault, always somebody else's, and just plain bad luck that we have the A-League record that we do. I'm not crying tears over Edwards being shifted on. I thought it was the wrong call at the time, learned that clearly there was more to it, but at the end of the day it doesn't stop the entire situation being a schmozzle of the club's own making, conveniently excused by them by the fact that this big bad man had all the control and was running the whole shadowy situation like a Bond villain. I think most supporters are past it one way or another - but I would like to think that they're not just going to lap up all the short-term crap that the club will go through yet again if Lowe is appointed after an 'executive search'.
