There's an article in the West today about Todd etc and it mentions that Sterjovski was the one who pointed out Todd to Mitch. I guess they still have a pretty good relationship. Hopefully that turns into a signature.

This online article is different. It has a bit more info on Jelic, and Tony says he will have a full squad by the end of this month:

Yeah The West actually sent two people down to the press conference yesterday. One, I understand use to blog for 442 (I think?) is Shayne Hope and the other, of course is Jonathan Cook. Both good journos, especially Cook who seems to be the best Football journalist in the state...

I hope that doesn't mean they stop recruiting at Mile.

i dont think dave mitch will stop trying for mile, we certainly wont a marquee and he is an option. The only question is wether dave mitchell thinks he can get a higher quality player then mile, or just go for mile. Like for example when alvaro recoba was interested, i think dave mitchell totally forgot about sterjovski then lol.

Guys, just something in regards to the EPL games.

Me and my mate are members, so all together we got 12 people going for each of the 3 games as you can get 6 tickets per member.

So do the same people, try to take as many as u can and try to get the full 6 tickets per membership so we can sell out and pack MES out!

Sagey deserves a sell out crowd for what he has done for us! Lets continue to keep the good vibe around the club going! ;)

Not until Friday the 29th May.

I thoroughly encourage everyone to become a member - general admin is only $260, or $143 for concession. Even cheaper at $130 if you're under 16...

I was set on getting a membership this season, but due to the game times I'll only be able to make 7 of the 13 home matches. I'll be at all of those games, but I can't justify the extra money for a membership (37 per game instead of 25).

I considered doing it anyway so that I could reserve a seat, but my friends (who also can only make the 7 games) weren't keen and I'd rather sit with them.

Both games only, they did go to the trouble of organising two teams after all. If they don't sell out by the time July comes around they'll probably release single tickets though

Glory scores Serbian striker
Monday, 18 May 2009

Perth Glory has added plenty of bite to its attack with proven goal scorer Branko Jelic signing a three year deal with the club.

Glory coach Dave Mitchell has been determined to add extra potency up front following Nikita Rukavytsya’s moved to Holland at the end of last season and is confident he has secured a player capable of scoring regularly and creating goals for team mates.

“With Nikita gone we needed to bolster our options up front and by securing Branko we feel that with have like for like in terms of quality,” Mitchell said.

“Branko is excellent in and around the box, he scores goals, makes great position and can also set things up for other players as well.”

The Serbian striker recently agreed to a mutual termination with his Bundesliga club FC Energie Cottbus after which Perth was able to discuss the possibility of a move to WA.

“Branko was player that we understood to be interested in coming to Australia but he was contracted so we didn’t think there was much hope of bringing him out here this season,” Mitchell said.

“However things can change quickly in football and after he became available we tabled an offer and explained what we’ve set out to do at the club and to our delight he was very keen to be part of that.”

The 32 year old has played for Serbian powerhouse side Red Star Belgrade and has experience in Asia where he claimed the Golden Boot award in the Chinese Super League with 21 goals for Beijing Guoan in 2005.

“He has proven himself to be a dangerous player in front of goal throughout his career and I’m sure he’ll be able to continue to do that for Perth Glory,” Mitchell said.

“Things have fallen into place nicely and we’re now in the process of securing working visas and the like to get him to Perth as soon as possible.”

Perth Glory has 19 contracted players for the Hyundai A-League 2009/10 season and is continuing discussions with a number of other prospects to fill the remaining spots including the marquee position.

Full name: Branko Jelic (Pron: Yell-itch)
Date of birth: May 5, 1977 (age 32)
Place of birth: Cacak, SFR Yugoslavia
Height: 1.83m
Position: Striker

Previous Clubs: 1995-2000 Borac Cacak (Serbia); 2000-2003 Red Star Belgrade (Serbia); 2003 FK Vojvodina (Serbia); 2004-2005 Beijing Guoan (China); 2006-2007 Xiamen Lanshi (China); 2008-2009 Energie Cottbus (Germany)

heres an article on the Jelic signing.

Dogfight continues over rectangular stadium
Tim Clarke
May 19, 2009 - 7:28AM
Perth Glory owner Tony Sage has vowed to fight any push to have his club leave Member's Equity Stadium - despite suggestions the FFA believes the former Perth Oval will be unsuitable to be any part of a bid to host the soccer World Cup.

Glory, the Western Force and WA's rugby league fraternities have been pushing the State Government hard in recent months to give the green light to a $73 million upgrade of Perth's premier rectangular stadium.

Sage admitted he was stunned over the weekend at reports that talks between the FFA and government officials last week centred on other potential sites as possible soccer venues - including the old East Perth power station

"There has been a spanner in the works, the FFA have come out to the west and put another proposal forward which has surprised everybody," Sage said.

"It certainly took us by surprise at Perth Glory, so we wait and see.

"We think that there will be a solution to MES within the next two months, it has to happen, everyone knows about the facilities.

"The Force are moving here next season and the government will act, I think, in the next couple of months."

The FFA's bid to host a soccer World Cup would currently not include Perth, with Subiaco Oval considered unsuitable for rectangular sports after the growing discontent of Force fans.

A long time critic of the FFA, Sage said any push to move Perth Glory from its current home would be resisted.

"This has come out of left field, and needs to be digested by everyone. That (move) would be extremely bizarre and I don’t think it would happen," Sage said.

I can see why the FFA don't like us!

So Branko Jelic is a like-for-like with Nikita, but doesn't have the pace...

In that case, do you think Mitch will play him with Dadi? Will two slow strikers work if we have quick attacking midfielders?

Can't see why not - our playing style last year consisted of through balls to Nikita to create a chance or a corner, a product of Niki's pace and lack of technical ability in the squad.

This season should be a more measured approach, Mitch is certainly bringing in better technical players to allow that. Burns, Sikora, Shroj, Jelic, Dadi should all be capable of maintaining possession. It won't be anything to rival Arsenal but you'll hopefully see some good link up play putting Sikora/Pelle down the wings to cutback or building up from the back and sending crosses into the box once Dadi and Jelic get in there.

Sage's stadium comments. He's come out in the media again - obviously with his 'their way or the highway' comments last time (About the kits) he feel the best way to approach this IS publicly, instead of behind closed doors.

With the stadium issue, surely Glory and the FFA should sit down and come to an understanding. Glory are in a difficult position - every man and his dog knows that MES is not suitable for WC matches, even with the currently proposed upgrades. The facilities would still not be up to scratch and the capacity way too small. But the thing is, this is Perth's rectangular home, it's Glory's home and soon to be the Force's.

Now, both of our teams would love some brand spanking new, state of the art, rectangle stadium to play in, thanks to the WC, but at the moment we have MES and the Force onboard with us, which includes some short term, but very necessary, stadium upgrades. And we don't want to jeopardise these things, especially in terms of Govt. support, by throwing up proposals for new stadiums which might divert funds from improving their current home, especially to draw a co-tenant who may be very valuable when it comes to future pushes to build a bigger, purpose built stadium.

Hmm the problem is, while actually building some of these stadiums may still be atleast 7-8 years away, the FFA need to lock in our plans in order to present it to FIFA, later this year. So this in line with Glory and Force's short term goals and suddenly there is some conflict - despite the WC thing being for the greater good, longer term.

A new say, 30k rectangular stadium, with all the facilities, and expandable to 40-45k with temporary seats, would be perfect. But at this rate, Kitchenor's multi-use 60k stadium, which is currently on hold, may end up being the go, once it's resumed. And can't be that bad a compromise, especially as it will have all the facilities, that huge capacity and the seats can be brought in, so viewing should not be soo bad. But yeah, legacy wise, its really a stadium for the AFL, and only the AFL would really benefit from that stadium. The Force's move to our ground, changes the politics and unites us in our goals for better facilities, a better stadium.

It's tough, but MES, in it's current form, it's far from WC capable. It would require to pretty much demolish the current stands and rebuild new, bigger ones, equalling a few hundred million dollars of upgrades/renovation, atleast. And in the end any permanent capacity over 30-35k = white elephant-ish so to reach WC capacity, this new stadium with have to be able to accomodate significant temporary seating, lifting it over that 40k mark, atleast. But with Perth's population and the WC visitors we'll draw, 50k capacity would not even be sufficient for the games.

Gosh it really is tough to work out - especially as we need to make a quick decision. We can't just throw away MES, unless unless there were a really solid proposal and the Force backed it. But Force have just moved into MES, very complicated. But it is possible I guess, as we'd all be keen on a classy new rectangle stadium and would certainly solve Force's worries, as too ours. But ofc it would require govt. money/support. And this this economic climate. :(

The thing is, with the Force, suddenly a longer term WC stadium legacy is very feasible. Rectangle sports here COULD regularly fill a Post-WC stadium that is 30k in size. Where as Glory alone, such a stadium, at present, would seem to be asking a bit much. But for Force, its perfect. So Force are perfect companions in this cause, in terms of mid-longer term. But shorter term, their demands for a better stadium (a better MES), might impede/obstruct any slightly longer term, new stadium ideas, in terms of govt. interest?
