Last 2 games have failed to impress me, especially against Welly. Let's hope we see improvement this week

Hating the log jam on the table leading into the final week for the season
4 does not go into 2
My guess is Brisbane and Scum FC will take the 2 spots available

Resenting our lapse against Wellington. Had we won that we would have already qualified for the finals by now (barring a 10 goal turnaround on GD and Jets beating WSW)
Oh well, finals start early. Nervous but have belief in our ability to knock off Adelaide in Perth.

That Wellington game was a terrible day, it seemed like the players didnt want it(something we generally don't suffer from), preety shite atmosphere too.
Let's hope we can impress the crowd and get a win on Saturday.

Farrand93 wrote:Lads, how's the squad shaping up for next year? Anyone know who's coming off contract and who we are linked with?
I called us signing Jammo last year, but i'm all out of ideas this time around  This question needs bumping, now Glory's season is over, and I'll 'attempt' to answer it, via Official/FFA Sites and articles: Contracts expiring end of season/still to be negotiated: CM - Liam Miller Glory signs Liam Miller - 3/6/2011 - VISA DF - Steve Pantelidis Perth Glory re-sign key duo - 4/5/2012FB/M - Dean Heffernan Perth Glory re-sign key duo - 4/5/2012W/FB - Evan Berger Berger To Beef Up Glory Stocks - 18/12/2010W - Adrian Zahra PG Snap Up Starlets - 30/4/2012CM - Steve McGarry PG resign Steve McGarry - 9/5/2012 - VISA CM - Matias Cordoba Matias Cordoba joins PG - 6/2/2013 - VISA CM - Nick Ward Nick Ward return home - 27/4/2012W - Ryo Nagai - Season long loan - Hopefully we can re-sign on loan or even permanently, though latter would be unlikely you'd think? Takes a VISA spot. LB - S. Jamieson (12/13) PG adds former Sydney defender Scott Jamieson to squad - 17/5/2012 - Odd, For some reason I thought he was on 2 season deal, but unless Glory I missed an anouncement of Glory re-signing him, it seems he's still to re-negotiate for next season? Players with contracts continuing into next season (13/14) atleast: AM - T.Dodd (Till end of this season - Option for 1 season extension) Glory finally nabs Dodd - 1/3/2011DM - J. Burns (13/14) Jacob Burns and Billy Mehmet sign new two-year deals to stay in A-League with Perth Glory - 27/2/2012GK - D. Vukovic (13/14) Vukovic joined PG on 3 season deal - 14/12/2010ST - S. Smeltz (13/14) Glory days ahead for Smeltz - 20/3/2011CB - M. Thwaite (13/14) Sydney target Perth Glory defender Michael Thwaite, sign Sheffield Wednesday junior Jarrod Kyle - 13/2/2013W - C. Harold (13/14) PG Snap Up Starlets - 30/4/2012CB - J. Clisby (13/14) Clisby Elevated - 22/1/2013CM - B. O'Neill (13/14) Glory rewards young duo - 2/5/2012ST - N. Makeche (13/14) Glory rewards young duo - 2/5/2012GK - N. Young (13/14) Perth snaps up Young - 28/2/2011AM - D. De Silva (14/15) De Silva signs for PG - 21/2/2013FB - M. Davies (15/16) Glory Legend Welcomes Young Stars - 6/3/2013FB - R. Woodcock (15/16) Glory Legend Welcomes Young Stars - 6/3/2013FB - J. Risdon (15/16) Risdon signs long term deal - 3/4/2013I hope I have all of the above correct. Others about the senior squad are NYL players on NYL deals, including Roux, Italiano, Quaqua and Higgins. I listed them by contract expiry date. Listed the positions so people know where our squad will be short if some of those off-contracts don't re-sign - which positions Glory will need to strengthen.

Now into the nitty gritty of who to re-sign or let go: Hopefully re-sign Nagai - guy is a gun and fits in well with Edwards' approach and philosophy, including being a young, energetic player of strong technique who can create. If Glory can't hang on, then they need to utilise that VISA spot on another Winger of similar ilk. Seeing Nagai in action reminds how Glory have missed that kind of speed and quality on the wing, especially with the likes of Heffernan out there. Re-sign: Miller - 1 season, Jamieson - 1/2 seasons, Zahra - 1 season, Cordoba - 1 season and Re-sign Ward - club veteran, good for squad depth rotation. flexable player, can be used across the midfield and even as striker. And with Glory's history of injuries, such players are needed. The Nick Ward of these days can't be too expensive either, one should think. Depart: Despite saying the above of Ward - Let Heffernan go - He'd be relatively expensive, especially for just a squad player and his contribution has been decidedly mixed. He only features more recently due to injuries to Dodd, Zahra and others. Glory need space in the cap and squad for better defensive cover too - as was again reflected this season. Panta gone - been a fillin CB too long and time and time again exposed as such, including the penalty against Victory. Being a recruit from over east, and his age range, Glory could do a bit better, with an out and out CB from elsewhere. Glory have been slumming it in their defensive stocks far too long (Since Todd and then C.Coyne absent/left). Berger can go too, to make way for another young local to bolster the squad in an area of need. ?: McGarry is a tricky one - I thought Glory could do better than McGarry, VISA spot wise, for quite a while, but he's consistently been one of Glory's better players especially this season, even when times are tough, and I've discovered that IF Glory re-sign him for next season, then entering into 2014 he will be eligible for Aussie Citizenship. Given his form and perhaps the consideration that he may be on the cheaper side, especially with his age now and leadership and experience he brings - Why not re-sign him for that 1 more year? Then have him as an Aussie that 1 more season after, especially if/when the experience of Dodd, Burns and co inevitable leave/retire as I believe they will, end of their contracts next season. Then again he'll be pushing into mid 30s by then aswell! What do you guys reckon, on McGarry? Edited by Gloryperth: 6/4/2013 04:48:31 AM

Wow didn't realise McGarry was close to citizenship. Worth keeping then IMO. I'd give him Cordobas spot (despite Mattias being the better of the two at the end of the season) if he is to continue on as an Aussie from 2014. Age would be a factor but unlike Dodd (for instance) McGarry still plays a complete game and runs hard. Probably one of the few lucky enough to age well.

Let Heffernan and Ward go, try and sell Smeltz. I'm still debating about Pantelidis
Really hope we can keep Nagai. We've seen Edwards is a good tactician but how good is he at signing the right players, so far he has had Fergies squad, who was a shit tactician but good at signing players.

Contracts expiring end of season/still to be negotiated:
CM - Liam Miller VISA --- hasn't he turned down a contract already? (out) DF - Steve Pantelidis --- Superb squadie (keep) FB/M - Dean Heffernan --- (out) W/FB - Evan Berger --- (out) W - Adrian Zahra (keep) CM - Steve McGarry VISA --- In the end, if we keep Cordoba, we cannot keep McGarry (Out) CM - Matias Cordoba VISA --- (keep) CM - Nick Ward --- (keep) LB - Scott Jamieson --- (keep)
W - Ryo Nagai VISA --- he won't stay (out)
I thought Dodd was on a 2 year deal with an options third? That would mean his deal is up, and vote him OUT
A new CB -Mullen, Kisnorbo, Ljubo New CM - musialik, Barry Robson, New LW -Nagai, Kewell, New RM -Suree Sukha New ST -Brent McGrath, Gamerio, Matt Simon
I'd be very happy with:
-----------------Vuka Ris---Thwaite--Ljubo--Jammo --------Burns------Musialik Sukha------Robson----Kewell ---------------Simon

CM - Liam Miller VISA --- would want to keep if they can agree to terms (keep) DF - Steve Pantelidis --- Superb squadie (keep) FB/M - Dean Heffernan --- Keep as a utility player. Who else can play as ST/LM/RB/CB?? Useful backup deep into a season (keep) W/FB - Evan Berger --- (out) W - Adrian Zahra (keep) CM - Steve McGarry VISA --- In the end, if we keep Cordoba, we cannot keep McGarry??? Why not, we have both now, plus he'll get citizenship midway through 2014 (keep) CM - Matias Cordoba VISA --- (keep) CM - Nick Ward --- (out) Tries his hardest but fucks up. LB - Scott Jamieson --- (keep) W - Ryo Nagai VISA --- he might stay and he seems to be enjoying playing under Edwards (keep) LM/ST - Dodd --- sorry, but his injury has ended his career. His salary will be covered by insurance, so Glory can afford a high priced Aust player

@Hotrod, right now we have 3 visa players in CM and a high salary non-VISA player there as well (burns). Then you also have Ward and O'Neill
My thoughts are that Cordoba or McGarry should go to free up a spot, and keep ward to plug an gaps.
Check out Barry Robson on YouTube, I reckon he'd be an awesome pick up! When I lived in Vancouver he was great for them! Really takes the game by the scruff of the neck, and caused problems for every team we played.

Agreed Scoll, with sentiments on Pantelidis - even though I may've put it a little more gently. :P Glory are decidedly second best in this area and those who have been fans of the game a while, like most of us I presume, can EASILY tell that Panta is NOT a natural CB and is often caught out, exposed for this, INCLUDING the recent final where he gave away the penalty due to a needless/clumsy foul. Guy does that often anyway, but he has a tactical naivity at CB and in that regard he suffers the same syndrome that most midfielders do when they 'fill-in' at CB - See Jacob Burns as his failure back there, having to cover for injuries/absences at the back - no surprise. Glory MUST strengthen to a sufficient level of depth at the back, and ALL that requires is bringing in more more exp CB, be he an exp Aussie or even a VISA spot utilised on him - ala like Bas Van Den Brink and Andy Todd before. Because we've seen - when a Thwaite is absent, Glory's stuffed. Can't afford to have a Jacob Burns, Heffernan or the like at CB, it's a joke and reflects the imbalance in the squad. Farrand93 wrote:@Hotrod, right now we have 3 visa players in CM and a high salary non-VISA player there as well (burns). Then you also have Ward and O'Neill

Agreed Farrand93 over CM VISA player thing and this is part of the thing that contributes to that squad imbalance. We have so many, perhaps too many centre and attacking mids, yet are so thin on recognised CBs. Edwards needs to address this and I'm sure he will re-balance. Signing 2 young fullbacks in Davies and Woodcock I think, in part, recognises the need to strengthen back there infact. Farrand93 - Nice pick up on Barry Robson - he's a well regarded player from SPL and even 'borough days. Scotland International too. But I hate to say, but AGE is a massive issue there, unfortunately - 34 going 35 and his recent club history suggests injuries have played their part too. As you appreciate Glory is trying to reverse the trend of an aging squad and many of our posts also reflect this desire. Farrand93 wrote:I thought Dodd was on a 2 year deal with an options third? We can let the expensive and aging Dodd go - We're better off giving more opportunity to the likes of Harold, Nagai (IF he stays), Zahra, Da Silva and any other young blokes Edwards may bring through. Da Silva is clearly quite the promising young star so if Dodd leaving means more game time opportunity for Da Silva, then all the better. Aussie4ever4 wrote:Any web designers here? Should read the end of this this but it's due to Ange post match comments and Harper always underrating Alistair/Glorys performance since Fergie got sacked. I'll prob have to remove 2 parts of the pics:) According to this thread it looks like Ward and Berger are gone and Pants red was for dissent. Edited by aussie4ever4: 7/4/2013 01:43:23 AM

But I really think the MLS is a good place for us to start looking for players. A faster paced league where some players are earning very little and would love a decent contract out here!

In terms of the redevelopment of NIB Stadium, will they be modernising the shed end?
The shed can all stay standing, but will they put in the green seats (colour coded to match NIB)?

Perth Glory wrote: Four players released Thursday, 11 April 2013 4:01 PM Perth Glory coach Alistair Edwards says it was an extremely tough decision to release four players as the club continues to regenerate it’s squad for the future.Out of contract at the end of this month, Nick Ward, Dean Heffernan, Evan Berger and Lewis Italiano have not been offered new deals for next season. “I’d really like to thank all four players for their services to Perth Glory,” Edwards said. “It was a tough decision because all four players are quality people and good professionals. “Unfortunately though, we need to make the necessary changes as we continue to implement our long term plan. “I wish Nick, Dean, Evan and Lewis all the best for their future endeavours and again thank them for their contribution.” Perth Glory is currently in discussions with Liam Miller, Steven McGarry, Ryo Nagai and Matias Cordoba who also come out of contract at the end of this month. A decision on their future will be made in due course. Interesting that Italiano is gone? Wouldn't he be cheap as a young keeper who never gets on the park anyway? Maybe Edwards knows of a better young keeper coming through, or wants to find competition for Vuka. Zero mention of Pantaledis in the article at all, I thought his contract was expiring too? Got dispirited when he wasn't in the four cut then confused when he wasn't in the renegotiation group. I hope the Nagai negotiations are successful but if they fall through Glory don't use it as an excuse to sign both McGarry and Cordoba. Two VISA spots for players that will rarely play together and aren't exactly stellar is a waste IMO. Keep one, preferably McGarry if he is to become Australian next year.

McGarry is a tireless worker and has played the No 10 role well when needed. Cordoba is under rated and having watched him off the ball (where gets into oodles of space) and his passes (very incisive through balls) he is needed. Glory need to let Miller go and get a true No. 10 from either OS or is there some Aussie player possibly floating around with the initials HK? Final piece in the puzzle needs to be a good CB to partner Thwaite. Shame to see Heff go. He can play various positions as a utility player and does allow flexibility off the bench.
