Hospitals 'fleeced $3m to fund soccer club'

A MAN defrauded two Sydney private hospitals of more than $3 million and used the money to fund a suburban soccer club, police allege.


Raheed Khan, 35, an employee of a hospital at Liverpool, faced court over the allegations today.

He was arrested today and charged with two counts of fraud after detectives were alerted to "financial irregularities'' involving a series of invoices sent to hospitals at Liverpool and Darlinghurst.

It is alleged the invoices were issued for goods that were not supplied.

Refused bail when arrested, Khan was granted his liberty by a magistrate at Liverpool Local Court today.

He is due to appear in the same court on November 10.

"Police allege the stolen $3.1 million was used to fund interstate trips, uniforms and registration expenses for a suburban soccer club,'' police said.
