Football Federation Victoria walked away with the honors today following two fast paced and entertaining matches to mark 125 Years of football in both Victoria and Northern NSW.

The matches between a Northern NSW men’s and women’s representative side were organized to mark the 125 years of football celebrations currently underway in each State.

In the first match, Northern NSW fielded a female squad coached by former Matilda Joey Peters and made up of a selection of players from the Herald Women’s Premier League and the Jet’s Westfield W-League squad.

A Northern NSW goal by Wauchope’s Rhali Dobson was not enough to overcome the Victorian side who took the match 2-1. Northern NSW had several shots on goal and dominated the majority of the match against their younger opponents but luck did not fall the home teams way and only Dobson managed to find the back of the net.

In the men’s match, former Socceroo Troy Halpin led his side in an intriguing encounter against the Victorian’s.

Peter Haynes opened the scoring for the home side with a penalty, making no mistake driving the ball into the back of the net.

In a seesawing match, Victoria countered with a goal to tie the match up 1-1 before NBN State League leading goal scorer and Player of The Year John Majurovski put Northern in front 2-1.

A second goal from Victoria tied up the match again and this looked like being the final score before Victoria, in the final minute of the match, caught the Northern defence napping and following an intense goal mouth tussle Victoria scored to close out the match 3-2.
