this my be a bit random, but since we are talking about hotels,
when i went to Sydney we stayed in a hotel/apartment in North Sydney, with a view of the city, harbour brifge, back of Luna Park but the Opera House was just cut out of sight.
I think the place was called 'harbourview' or something like that?

The Victoria Hotel isn't too bad, cheap rooms in a pretty good location with plenty of food & shops nearby. I've lumped up at 2am and managed to get a room, so booking shouldn't be a problem http://www.victoriahotel.com.au/
