I think Ice Hockeys alright over here. I used to know a guy who played for Canterbury. Played out at Canterbury Ice rink next to the swimming pool. I saw a game of his once, he wasn't bad.

Luge-Georgian dies in horrific training crashWHISTLER, Feb 12 (Reuters) - A huge black cloud descended over the Vancouver Olympics on Friday after 21-year-old Georgian luge competitor Nodar Kumaritashvili was killed in a horrific training crash at the Whistler Sliding Centre. Kumaritashvili was making his final practice slide before Saturday's competition when he lost control at 90mph on the exit of the 16th corner and was launched over the rim of the track before crumpling into an unpadded pillar. His sledge and smashed visor continued down the ice towards the finish line which was just metres away. Medics performed emergency resuscitation at the scene before he was flown down the mountain by helicopter where he died in hospital. Ashen-faced course officials walked around in stunned silence as they waited for news. "Unfortunately, he died," Georgian Olympic delegation head Irakly Japaridze told Reuters by telephone. "We are all in deep shock, we don't know what to do. We don't know whether to take part in (today's) opening ceremony or even the Olympic Games themselves." The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and International Luge Federation (FIL) issued a joint statement confirming Kumaritashvili's death, the first during the Olympics since Swiss skier Nicholas Bochatay crashed into a snow-grooming machine at the Albertville Games in 1992. "Our first thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues of the athlete. The whole Olympic Family is struck by this tragedy which clearly casts a shadow over these Games," IOC president Jacques Rogge said in the statement. "This is a terrible accident," added FIL president Josef Fendt. "This is the gravest thing that can happen in sport, and our thoughts and those of the luge family are naturally with those touched by the event." 'ALL HEARTBROKEN' Vancouver organising committee (VANOC) head John Furlong said he was stunned by the fatality on what should have been a joyous day for his staff. "Nodar came to Canada with hopes and dreams that it would be a great moment in his life," he told a news conference. "He came to feel what it is like to be an Olympian. We are all heartbroken." Luge training was immediately suspended and there were doubts over whether the first two runs of the men's singles scheduled for Saturday would take place. The IOC said investigations would be carried out into the circumstances of the crash while a teams' meeting was due to be held later on Friday. Kumaritashvili, the son of Selix, the head of the Georgian Luge Federation, was competing at his first Olympics after racing in five World Cup events this year with little success. LUGE FATALITY His death was the first luge fatality in the Olympic Games since Briton Kazimierz Kay-Skrzypeski died during a training run in Innsbruck, Austria in 1964, the debut year for the sport in which athletes hurtle down the track feet first. An FIL spokesman said that at a recent international training week at Whistler Sliding Centre, acknowledged as the fastest in the world, there had been 2,500 runs with only a three percent crash rate. However, athletes have been remarking all week on the speed and technical difficulty of the 1,400 metre track which features corners nicknamed 50-50 and Shiver. FIL spokesman Wolfgang Harder said on Thursday that future tracks would need to be slowed down to protect the safety of athletes. "We are going to have to put speed limits in the next track which will be built for the Olympics," he said after Manuel Phister set the fastest recorded luge speed of 154kmh. Friday's fatal accident occurred on the 16th corner, the final curve of a high-speed labyrinth that has proved treacherous even for the world's top lugers. Earlier on Friday, double Olympic champion and gold medal favourite Armin Zoeggeler of Italy was caught out at the 11th corner and was flipped off his sled. A Romanian woman competitor was briefly knocked unconscious on Thursday. Just a short while before Kumaritashvili's crash American Bengt Walden said even the FIL thought the track was too fast. "I don't think they are going to build any more faster than this and I think the FIL were unhappy with how fast the track was allowed to be," he said. http://au.sports.yahoo.com/olympics/news/article/-/6798445/lugegeorgian-dies-horrific-training-crash

Inexplicable "punk" fiddlers and Irish dancers? Slam poetry? Mechanical failure of their torch? KD Lang murdering "Hallelujah"?

Great game indeed Funky. Was hoping for a Slovak equaliser to push it into OT. Sets up a great final vs the USA. It's a shame Finland didn't turn up in the first period of their match this morning.

Epic match. Expected Canada to breeze this match given how many stars they have. But the US did beat them earlier in the tournament. In the end, it was left up to Crosby, and the man delivered. Best player in the world.
BTW, who does everyone support in the NHL? I'm (unfortunatly) a Maple Leafs man.

Am I the only one confused as to how the WINTER Olympics entails more lycra-clad events than the Summer Olympics?

For what its worth There has never been a winter Olympics held in the southern hemisphere
But if I was going to romanticise the olympics I would nominate Antarctica to hold a winter olympics - in summer, to accomodate the eurocentric audience the winter olympics does have
And why not? No nation of state affiliated with the most southerly land mass on earth

Quote:Australia's best chances for gold in Sochi
Australia will take a record 60 athletes to the Sochi Winter Olympic Games as they look to build on their record success from Vancouver four years ago.
But who among them are the best chances of winning a medal? Take a look at the top contenders.
Torah Bright (Halfpipe, Slopestyle and Snowboard Cross) Australia's golden girl of the Vancouver Olympics looks set to cover herself in glory once again in Sochi.
Bright is a raging favourite to defend her title in the snowboard Halfpipe and she is also a good chance for a medal in the Slopestyle event.
A greater workload and the weight of expectation are added burdens for Bright this year, but gold-medal winning run four years ago after she crashed out at the first attempt shows she can handle the pressure.
Success in Sochi would see Bright confirm her status as Australia's greatest-ever Winter Olympian, and she's still only 27-years-old.
Alex Pullin (Snowboard Cross) The 2012-2013 season was a golden won for 'Chumpy' Pullin, who became the first Australian to defend a winter World Championship.
He also took overall honours in the World Cup last season after finishing on the podium four times out of seven races, which is a remarkable achievement in an unpredictable sport like Snowboard Cross.
Despite a heavy crash during a race in December, Pullin is hopeful his relaxed preparation in Australia will see him peak in Sochi.
He has a score to settle as well; he crashed out four years ago in Vancouver while comfortably leading eventual champion Seth Wescott in his heat.
Russ Henshaw (Ski Slopestyle) Henshaw has had to overcome several horrific injuries just to be in Sochi for his first Olympics.
The Sydney-born skier tore his anterior cruciate ligament in 2011, before unfortunately tearing it against last year.
With the Olympics just around the corner, Henshaw decided against a second round of surgery and spent most of 2013 rehabilitating.
Henshaw's injury means he has only just returned to competitive action, but early signs are he will be well in contention for a medal in Sochi.
Lydia Lassila (Aerials) The reigning Olympic champion, Lassila will again face a tough test from a host of Chinese athletes if she wants to defend her crown in Sochi.
Having taken a break after the Vancouver Games to start a family, Lasilla returned to competition with a bang in 2012.
She finished third overall in the 2012-2013 World Cup season and also grabbed fifth place at the World Championships.
She has one gold and one silver from five World Cup events this season and should be right in contention for a medal in Sochi.
Anna Segal (Ski Slopestyle) Segal's preparation for Sochi, like a lot of her career, has been hampered by injury.
The 27-year-old missed a big chunk of last season after undergoing knee surgery and she has struggled to regain full fitness heading into the Games.
But the former moguls skier is a class act in the Slopestyle event, as shown by her World Championship title in 2011.
She's also enjoyed past success at the Winter X Games and if she can get over her injury problems, she will be in with a good chance of a medal.
Other medal chances
Dale Begg-Smith (Moguls) An international man of mystery, Canadian-born Begg-Smith is Australia's most decorated Winter Olympian. Having won gold at the 2006 Games, Begg-Smith came agonisingly short of defending his title in Vancouver. He has only just returned to competitive action after a long absence, recording a best finish of fifth from five World Cup events this season. Just how Begg-Smith will go in Sochi is, much like the man himself, a mystery.
Jarryd Hughes (Snowboard Cross) Just 18-years-old, Hughes stunned competitors at the World Cup event in Lake Louise this season, winning gold in his first World Cup final. He enjoys the role of the 'outsider' and is always in with a chance in such an unpredictable sport like Snowboard Cross.
Scotty James (Halfpipe and Slopestyle) James made history at the Vancouver Games as a 15-year-old when he became the youngest male winter Olympian in 50 years. Having grown an incredible 23cms in four years, James has plenty of confidence to go with his bigger frame having been crowned overall World Cup champion this season.
David Morris (Aerials) A 29-year-old from Melbourne, Morris was the first Australian male to win a World Cup aerials event, which he did in the Ukraine in February last year. He finished the 2012-2013 season ranked No.2 in the world and while his World Cup performances this season haven't been as impressive, he can't be counted out.
Laura Peel (Aerials) A 24-year-old former gymnast from Canberra, Peel did her chances of an Olympic medal no harm when she finished second in a test event at Sochi last year. While not a household name, Peel's knowledge of the venue means she could upstage her more fancied rivals.

Quote:Jamaicans call for halt to Sochi donations
Jamaica's Olympic bobsleigh team on Thursday pleaded with their adoring fans to stop sending money to fund their Sochi fairytale while also dreaming of converting Usain Bolt from sprint to snow.
Pilot Winston Watts admitted that the Internet campaign to fund their trip had been such a success that he and brakeman Marvin Dixon feared they would be damned as greedy opportunists if they didn't call a halt.
"The donations were just coming on and on. We had to stop them. We've called a press conference to do it," said Watts after almost $80,000 poured into the empty Jamaica coffers.
"We just didn't want them to think that we're greedy people."
Watts said that despite being the Games underdogs, his country had the world's fastest guy and he was dreaming of having Bolt on his team some day in the future.
"We are underdogs here," he said. "But we (Jamaicans) have the fastest guy in the world -- Usain Bolt.
"He (Bolt) is with us all the time, he's standing behind us just like the rest of the world is standing behind us. He could be a very good pusher but there's one thing about him -- he doesn't like cold.
"But he said once -- maybe next time I'll try myself as a Jamaican bobsleigh team member. And it would be awesome to have him on my team. It would be a terrific combination of a strong guy like me and the fast guy like him."
Watts and Dixon finally got on the bobsleigh track on Thursday after being reunited with their lost luggage that had kept them idle since their arrival.
Other bobsleigh teams in Sochi said the presence of the Jamaicans could only be good for the sport.
"I know those guys, they did work hard and it's not easy to qualify for the Games. I mean they tried in 2006 and they missed, they tried in 2010 and they missed. They tried again and they made it and it is good (for the sport) to have that exposure," said US competitor Steven Holcomb.
"They have a great story and I know those guys and they are great guys," he added. http://wwos.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=8794860Today is the day.

Begun already. Quote: Official: Plane lands in Turkey after passenger makes bomb threat, asks plane to land in Sochi
(CNN) -- A Pegasus Airlines plane landed at an Istanbul airport on Friday after a passenger "said that there was a bomb on board" and wanted the plane to land in Sochi, Russia, officials with Turkey's Transportation Ministry said.
"While the plane was in the air, one of the passengers said that there was a bomb on board and asked the plane to not land in Sabiha Gokcen (in Turkey) but rather to land in Sochi," Transportation Ministry official Habip Soluk said Friday on CNNTurk.
The Winter Olympic Games began Thursday in Sochi amid intense security against potential terror attacks. Official opening ceremonies were being held Friday.
The plane sent a hijacking signal, and after landing it was being held in a safe zone at Istanbul's Sabiha Gokcen Airport, Turkish state media outlet TRT reported.
The plane had been flying a route between Istanbul and Kharhov, Ukraine, the Transportation Ministry representative said. It wasn't clear in which city the flight started.

Good thing Australia is not really a factor in winter olympics
The coverage is unbiased and unparochial as a result. Its horrible and brainwashing in both olympics if youre an American
Basically its America vs the world on the nbc when the Olympics are on

These are "The Worst Games Ever!" in what respect are they the worst games ever? Sydney had all kinds of problems it was riddled and rife with undetected doping that came out years later the opening ceremony had all kinds of technical issues... the ratings in the USA were extremely poor, the vault was set at the wrong height costing the favourite a gold medal... the list goes on

As much as Im a fan of the paralympic movement, I am not a fan of the winter paralympics, winter sports are extremely dangerous - even for able bodied athletes, but the death toll for the winter paralympics is more than it needs to be - ie more than zero!
There was a reason why there wasnt women's ski jumping - ie its glorified "playing chicken with death", just because they want equality in the world doesnt mean everyone should do it!
In most cases in the Winter paralympics there is 1 participant for events like the 1 competitor in the quad snowboarding :x and he or she could die doing it
