Real Madrid prepare £30m move for Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard

A report in the Daily Star this morning claims Real Madrid ’s shock Champions League exit to Lyon last week means the Spanish giants will try and secure Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard in the summer.

Paul Hetherington reports that Real Madrid believe they can complete the signing of Gerrard following a hugely disappointing season for Liverpool.

Real Madrid are also wary of Manchester City’s spending power if Gerrard does hint that he would be willing to leave Anfield. However, it is understood that the England midfielder would rather move abroad than join another Premier League team.

In a further twist, the Daily Star add that Gerrard could move to the Bernabeu alongside Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez whose future remains unclear and who has been linked with Real Madrid in recent days.

Steven Gerrard is contracted to Liverpool until the end of 2012/2013. This season he has scored seven goals and provided six assists in 32 appearances in the Premier League and Europe.
