South Coast Wolves broke a 385 day NSW Premier League drought with a 3-2 win over Bankstown last night.
The triumph was the Wollongong-based outfit's first league victory since they finished with the same scoreline against Bonnyrigg in March last year.
The club was then known as Wollongong Community Football Club and two-goal hero Mark Piccolini was plying his trade for Port Kembla. Last night at Jensen Park, Piccolini scored in the 46th and 58th minutes to give the Wolves the lead after they went behind through Richard Luksic's header on the half-hour.
Andres Gomez tapped in midway through the second period for 3-1, before Almir Dizdaric forced a nervous finish with an 88th-minute strike that made it 3-2.
South Coast coach Trevor Morgan revealed last year's horror campaign, which finished with the Wolves at the bottom of the ladder, was a taboo subject in 2010.
"I made a decision a month ago that we weren't even going to talk about last year - it's basically a new squad and we're focused on this season," Morgan said.
"Now that we've won one, we need to know how to control games once we are in front."
Morgan said the conquest was just reward for the Wolves after a series of gallant efforts in the first month of the season.
"We have been working towards a result like this," he said.
"Some of the stuff we played was lovely, we played some very clever football.
"We were down 1-0 at half-time, but to be fair we should have been up 4-1."
Morgan believes the win - which took the Wolves from 10th to eighth - could be the start of a giant-killing run, starting with Blacktown next Saturday.
"We have beaten a team that won 5-1 last week - if we get a little better each week, there's no reason why we can't win a lot of games," he said. "If we can improve our finishing, why can't we beat a lot more teams?"
