Soccer wins his heart

by Olga Gerloff

MERRYLANDS’ Hussein Elrich may be a swimming and athletics champion but it’s soccer that has won his heart.

The year 6 Villawood North Public School student was named last year’s Senior Boys Soccer Player of the Year for his exceptional skills.

This week’s Junior Sports Star nominee and school captain also plays for the Auburn Junior District Soccer Club.

``I love a variety of sports, but soccer is the one I really want to focus on,’’ Hussein said.

The multi-talented sportsman was also crowned Junior Boys Swimming, Athletics and Cross-Country Champion in 2009.

``I’m looking forward to trying out for Westfield Sports High School in May,’’ Hussein said.

``Next year is going to be all about combining sports with my studies.’’

* How you can nominate

Athletes aged 10-16 are invited to enter the 2010 Cumberland-Courier Junior Sports Star Awards, sponsored by Rebel Sport.

Local clubs, coaches, parents, friends and family members can all nominate youngsters for the awards.

Nomination forms can be found in your Parramatta Advertiser or at parramattaadvertiser.com.au.

Dedicated athletes from across Sydney and the Central Coast are in the running to win a $2000 cash prize.

The winner of the 2010 Parramatta Advertiser Junior Sports Star will receive $1000 and a medal.

Our winner will then be in the running for the Cumberland-Courier Medal, the recipient of which will receive another $1000.

The 2010 awards will again include the Young Achiever Award, with youngsters vying to win $500.

The third categorywill be the Contribution to Sport Medal which is open to adult volunteers who have made a significant contribution to sport behind the scenes.
