Australia not to score 1 goal in the tournament Is it just me or are the A-League bashers from The Grass Roots forum also gunning for socceroos failure as well??? I'm a realist and am very nervous about our chances of progressing past the group but I take no joy from it as some seem to [-x Edited by davide82: 28/4/2010 03:53:17 PM

urrgghh, this new sub-forum's annoying, i keep clicking on Australian football rather than world football 'cos everything's gone down one ](*,)
on the other hand it's exciting 'cos you know the world cup is close when it's got it's own sub-forum on the 442 forums \:d/ we're gunna need a new match-day thread in here somewhere especially for the world cup (not yet obviously, it's too early for that), and maybe a mod should move the World Cup Kits thread from extra time into here.

It's quite difficult this year, no-one stands out. The African teams will be keen to put in a good performance in their own back-yard (if a country two thousand miles from their own can be called such) and I bet they'll be the beneficiaries of some very dodgy refereeing decisions.
Some of the usual suspects appear a little, well, suspect. Argentina made a bit of a bollix of qualifying, likewise France, Germany seem to be suffering a crisis of confidence and I just don't rate the current Brazil team though they do have a habit of turning it on when push comes to shove. England have one of the best managers but haven't played anyone half decent recently, I expect that they'll go out on penalties in the semis and moan about it for the next four years. Italy can't be ruled out although they lack the siege mentality they had last time around after the Moggi-gate affair broke, but they have the easiest group.
The only certainties are that the Kiwis will be branded "plucky losers" and Australia won't get within cooee.

Australia to be knocked out by Rd of 16? Here's hoping! (That they get that far!)
Winner - Umm ah, ummm, Brazil? (Swiss Rd of 16, Netherlands Quarters, England Semis) Second - Spain (Ivory Coast/Portugal Rd of 16, Italy/Slovakia Quarters, Argentina/Germany Semis) Third - England Fourth - Argentina
And it's hard to resist throwing out there that Germany and Netherlands will be up in there in the mix somewhere, but as likely Winners of Group D, Germany will face the Runner Up of Group C, who could well be Slovenia or USA, who they SHOULD overcome, to then face Argentina in the Quarters and I think by then, the 'Messi Factor' combined with Germany's weaknesses, could see Argentina come through that one. The Netherlands SHOULD make the Quarters on the back of their topping Group E, where they will, unfortunately, run into Brazil, who should be well steeled after topping their tough group.
France have the kind of group where it COULD set them up well for a good tournament, but their 'Irish Demons,' 'Domenech' and their record in past, recent, Non-Euro World Cups (Korea/Japan) don't fill with alot of confidence. And given all that - their group is also such, that Mexico could top it, with a South Africa, rampaging on a wave of euphoria, could sneak in for second place. And I think the poor recent history in 'Away/Non-Euro' World Cups, is a reason, partially, why Italy may not do so well this time, including that they may top their group, but the Runners Up of Group E who they'd face in the Rd of 16, could well trip them up, much like how South Korea did in 02 especially as the potential Runners Up of that group could be either Denmark or Cameroon.
Golden Boot - Tough, well going by what I predict above, Luis Fabiano? With David Villa and Messi up there aswell perhaps.
Player of the Tournament - Kaka or Xavi? Or even Rooney or Messi? :o lol
