Nowhere near enough international experience to start in a WC tbh.

By your reasoning the Worst keeper in the squad, James, starts by defauly because he has the most experience.

Hart should get the nod. He's a good keeper and had the best season of the three. Experience and reputation counts for little at a World Cup and Hart has been playing at the top level for a number of years now.

I'd say England 2-0 at most.

Green off Hart in for Algeria?

I wasn't sure whether it would be Dawson or Carragher there with him. I'm not saying King shouldn't be, just that I wasn't expecting him to be in th first game.

Crouchy is the super sub, he'll coem on after about 65 minutes.

King is a gun!
Would of preferred Crouchy in the starting line up somewhere.
Come on ENGLAND !!!
Thou if possible i would maybe prefer usa to top this group so that if Australia sneaks 2nd they wouldn't have to play each other =D

England crowd, media 'disrespect' us, say U.S. fans
Reuters - June 12, 2010, 9:56 pm

RUSTENBURG, June 12 (Reuters) - American fans arriving for Saturday's keenly anticipated World Cup Group C opening match between the United States and England complained that their opponents have shown them a lack of respect.

Not only do they feel they have made great progress with their world ranking -- the Americans are up to 14th while England are eighth -- thanks to improved international performances but that their soccer has developed enormously.

They feel these factors have been ignored by English supporters and the British media.

"Soccer is such a popular game now in the States," said Steve Heard, a native of San Francisco, currently living in Paris. "People outside America don't appreciate how much it has grown and how many people play it and follow it.

"I am not talking about women and kids -- lots of men play now and our leagues are growing everywhere. It is becoming a really big sport for us and you will see that here with the number of Americans at this game.

"I do think there is a lack of respect, yes. People don't know about American soccer and we are not a traditional soccer nation, but that is changing all the time.

"We love it and, for me, it is my absolute number one sport. That is why we are here to back our team. But I don't expect things to change much until all our best players are playing in our own league."

MORE TICKETS

FIFA officials confirmed on Friday that the organisers had sold more tickets for the game to American fans than English supporters.

"I think there will be a lot of fans, but not as many as some people said because it is so expensive to fly here," added Steve's partner Kristyn Falkenstern, from upper-state New York.

"I have heard of people buying their tickets first and then deciding not to come because they can't afford the travel costs and then travelling and staying here in South Africa."

They said they expected around 30,000 Americans to attend the World Cup.

Heard and Falkenstern went to Germany to support the U.S. team in 2006 and believe they have improved sufficiently to give England, and their fans, a sharp reminder not to sit on the laurels of their past.

"I don't know if we can win this game but I just hope we can give a good performance. England may not want to be reminded, but we have a 100 per cent record against them in the World Cup so we want to keep that going if we can!"
The U.S. famously beat England 1-0 in their only previous finals meeting in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, in 1950. (Editing by Jon Bramley)

What are the USA odds? I think the USA is a special for the game against England. Their strikers are too fast on the break for the England defence.

What do you guys reckon the score will be?

For me, 3-1 to England - Rooney with 2, Gerrard with 1 and Dempsey for the USA.

It will end in tears, it always does

* Mike Wood
* From: The Australian

The big kick-off is less than a week away and I've come over all Big Kev.

I know I've gone too soon in the excitement stakes but it's the World Cup for crying out loud and I'm hyped.

From here to the final on July 11 we're on the fever pitch express baby.

I'll nail my colours to the mast here - I'm English. Just an accident of birth but English nevertheless.

And when it comes to soccer, Englishmen are born to suffer for the national cause.

It must be a genetic flaw, because we never learn.

Every two years, when the World Cup or the European Championships come around, England doesn't just expect, it demands.

We yearn for success. Blissfully ignorant of some salient facts - that we're simply not good enough for example - we anticipate one tournament after the next, convinced that this is the one. That this is the year we get to lift another trophy.

And that will be the year we can finally stop banging on about 1966.

So every two years, for 30 days or so, we live life in a soccer bubble, struck by this debilitating disease that leaves us chairbound for inordinately long periods, swaying ever so slightly, eyes fixed on the TV, muttering a variety phrases likely to include: “Pass it. Square ball. Go left. Hit it! Useless wanker...”

It's bad when England doesn't qualify. Then we have to fill a month-long tournament following a surrogate team - maybe the Netherlands because they play “sexy football” or Trinidad & Tobago because everyone loves an underdog - but never the Germans.

Nor Argentina.

But when England does qualify we get swept along on a wave of national optimism.

The further the team progresses, and sometimes we do go quite a long way, the more the expectation builds.

Which just makes the pain of the inevitable defeat all the harder to bear.

And it is a pain which scars.

Say “Italia 90” to any Englishman of a certain age and he will fire back with: “Semi-final; Germany; Gazza in tears; penalty shootout; Psycho misses; shit.”

But that was a mere flesh wound compared to Euro 96.

That one was surely our destiny, played in our own backyard.

The country went bonkers. Flags were out. Kids were kitted up in the George Cross as opposed to hoodies and the streets hummed to the tune of “Football's Coming Home”.

We beat Scotland.

Murdered the Netherlands.

Then Germany in the semi-final again.

Another penalty shootout and yes, lightning can strike the same place twice.

This time it was Gareth Southgate's wobbly effort that brought the England express to a shuddering halt and a nation fell eerily silent as 50 million people realised at the very same moment that the party was over.

A striker called Kuntz scored for Germany that day, and his name never fails to be mentioned when that game comes up in conversation.

Here in Australia, I'm happy to report the country is relatively disease-free. Must be the quarantine laws.

But the symptoms are certainly there.

Is it really four years since the Socceroos skipped joyously through the group stage in Germany, only to be cruelly halted by a belly-flopping Italian throwing himself over a prostrate Lucas Neill to win a last-minute penalty?

That hurt.

And if it feels like it was just yesterday and it still hurts then you're sick, my friend. Soccer fever has its claws in you, too.

Over the next few weeks, South Africa 2010 will bring us the best of times and the worst of times.

Heart-lifting victories and gut-wrenching defeats.

It's madness to get sucked into it again and again but that's what happens. You'll see.

So for me, my new lucky t-shirt has arrived in the post.

The fridge is stocked, the wall chart is up and the HD recorder primed.

I'm excited.

Bring it on.

Bit of a bump but Capello has released his squad numbers and perhaps a bit of a surprise is David James at no.1, indicating that he might start against the USA.

Also Peter Crouch is no.9 also indicating he might start against the US.

Apart from that no real surprises.

The squad numbers are as follows.

Goalkeepers: 1 D James, 12 R Green, 23 J Hart.

Defenders: 2 G Johnson, 3 A Cole, 5 R Ferdinand, 6 J Terry, 13 S Warnock, 15 M Upson, 18 J Carragher, 20 L King.

Midfielders: 4 S Gerrard, 7 A Lennon, 8 F Lampard, 11 J Cole, 14 G Barry, 16 J Milner, 17 S Wright-Phillips, 22 M Carrick.

Forwards: 9 P Crouch, 10 W Rooney, 19 J Defoe, 21 E Heskey.

i dont want david james or heskey to be picked. i think that they could be more of a problem than an asset. the reason for this is they both inconsistent and at times very dodgy.

i think hargreaves wouldnt be a bad inclusion. he was our best in 06 and despite not having much 1st class action, he can deliver when called upon at any time.

Goal.com UK team pick their final England Word Cup squad

The 23 footballers whom Fabio Capello must take to South Africa

10 May 2010 10:24:00

As England manager Fabio Capello prepares to name his 30-man provisional World Cup squad, speculation is rife concerning the footballers the nation will be pinning our hopes on this summer.

From calls to pick in-form strikers Bobby Zamora and Darren Bent to rumours of a return to the international fold of Jamie Carragher, Capello has had plenty to mull over before naming his list on Tuesday.

Seven of those 30 will then face the heartbreak of being told by the Italian tactician that they have not made the final cut when he names his final 23 in June.

With that in mind, members of the Goal.com UK team decided to draw up our preferred 23-man squad - and to ask you which list you think is the best.

(Rules of Engagement:We have picked from all eligible English players, including those 'ignored' by Capello in past squads. Jamie Carragher has been excluded as he is still officially 'retired' from international football - for now)

BREAKDOWN

There is consensus over what seems to be an 'untouchable' core to the squad with David James, Joe Hart, John Terry, Ashley Cole, Rio Ferdinand, Steven Gerrard, James Milner, Gareth Barry, Frank Lampard, Aaron Lennon, Wayne Rooney and Peter Crouch named in EVERY squad.

Robert Green, who looks set to be handed the No.1 jersey despite an indifferent season for West Ham, is ommitted from three out of eleven squads - replaced by Paul Robinson (twice) and Chris Kirkland (once).

Six squads include Sunderland hitman Darren Bent, whose 24 goals this season make him the highest English goal scorer behind Wayne Rooney - whilst Fulham's Bobby Zamora is named thrice.

Scott Parker, whose all-action displays in the heart of midfield have sparked a debate over whether he has earned a return to the national set-up, is named three times, whilst seven squads include Chelsea's Joe Cole.

Gabriel Agbonlahor, Owen Hargreaves, Wes Brown, Stephen Warnock and Phil Neville are all named just once respectively. And despite Shaun Wright-Phillips' dazzling performance against Egypt in England's last friendly, the shared belief that Tottenham's Aaron Lennon is a key member of the squad means the diminutive Manchester City winger is named just once too.

Adam Johnson won't go he left his run for the squad to late and his form still is a bit sketchy tbh. Ledley King won't go. right, you can be President of the Sol Campbell for England and i'll do the same with Johnson... Central Defenders are Terry, Rio, and Upson (he's stuck with him right through the qualifiers even if he's playing shite at the moment) which leaves you with probably 2 more spots to fill because Wes Brown will get the back up right back spot out of lack of competition (and no if Gary Neville goes i will refuse to go for England so he won't go) and you'll either get Warnock/Baines go if Bridge still refuses to join the squad. I'm sure one of those spurs defenders will atleast go if not both (Dawson over King because Capello has regularly said form is the deciding factor [but experience definitely plays a part])

where are you getting those stats from?

it's 20 goals in 37 games for England with Crouch

http://www.thefa.com/England/All-Teams/Players/C/Peter-Couch

He's got a far superior scoring rate than Defore (11 in 39) and Heskey (7 in 57) and arguably better than Rooney (25 in 58). Crouch gives you something different, an added dimension that you can bring on with half hour or so to go, the lad finds the net reguarly even if half the time it isn't totally fashionabley but the other half can be spectacular. Also if the defence is rather short it's something you can quite easily expose when you've got a player like Crouch

the 4 spots are locked in for the strikers.... although Capello could take a 5th, but i wouldn't if you take Walcott in the squad he can be your 5th striker if needed

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/football_focus/8641742.stm
Football Focus gets BBC pundits Alan Hansen, Mark Lawrenson, Alan Shearer and Lee Dixon to select their England squad for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The squad that the BBC boys pick are pretty close to the mark... James will be in the squad because who else are you going to take Kirkland? Robinson?... the thing with Hart is he's never played with the england back four before, while James and Green have played numerous times with the Terry Ferdinand/Upson pairing, Alan Hansen makes a good point, does John Terry and Rio trust a 22 year old in the sticks in a world cup semi-final? With the FF squad i only disagree with Ledley King going and Adam Johnson not (It's offical i am the president of the Adam Johnson fan club)

Rooney and Defoe are locks

Crouch is virtually a lock as well, goal scoring record is impeccable and it'd be pretty silly not to take him. Capello knows this

Last spot goes to Heskey unfortunately, although i would love to see Gabby or Carlton Cole go though

I think crouch will go aswell, however he record of 12 goals in 44apps scares me... as its not the best strike rate our there, however his experience is what i think will get him there... Bent is a big boy though and can certainly hold his own, however he know for the odd holwer or Penaly miss lol....
