Missed opportunities lead to Lady Devils' first defeat

BALLARAT Lady Devils have tasted defeat for the first time this season, with a 4-2 loss at the hands of University of Melbourne in Football Federation Victoria women's state league one at Princes Park on Sunday.

Two goals behind within the first 15 minutes of the match, Ballarat managed to rally before half-time with a goal to Jaz Emselle, who scored from a Beth Taylor corner.

A pair of Melbourne goals in the second half put the result beyond doubt.

The visitors played the match out to the end, however, earning a consolation goal through Tessa Curtain.

Lady Devils coach David Broadbent said the difference between the teams was University's ability to make the most of its chances.

"We were competitive for the entire game but at this level we have to make much better use of scoring opportunities," said David Broadbent.

"We were often slow to react when they shifted their point of attack, which created more pressure than we would have liked.

"At the other end we created enough chances to take the game but failed to convert them.

"The girls played well, though, and if things went our way, we could have been 3-0 up in the first 10 minutes. I think University played a similar game to us but were a bit quicker to execute and took their chances."

Ballarat had no shortage of shots on goal, with Simone Boorn-Wells and Taylor unlucky on a number of occasions.

Two shots by Boorn-Wells beat the University keeper but were cleared off the line by the defence.

The Lady Devils did not help their own cause with a number of poorly directed crosses and misdirected shots on goal.

In the back half, Lisa Dejong and Millie Williams were particularly busy.

"Overall the team played creative, positive football but we need to improve the speed of our decision-making and reduce our errors at crucial times in the game," Broadbent said.

"I am confident the team will bounce back next week at home against South Yarra." http://www.thecourier.com.au/news/local/sport/general/missed-opportunities-lead-to-lady-devils-first-defeat/1819649.aspx
