Away win a knockout for Mushies
03 May, 2010 04:00 AM
TAMWORTH FC bowed out of Solo Cup contention but reigning premiers Oxley Vale Attunga Mushrooms will continue on in the statewide knockout tournament after beating Sawtell Scorpions at Toormina on Saturday.

The Mushies beat the home side 2-1 to earn a third round match against an, as yet, unknown side, said OVA skipper Ben Davis.

Goals from Mitch O’Keefe and Ben Genardini earned OVA a third round KO berth.

“We dominated the first 45 minutes,” Davis said after the KO success.

“We had heaps of opportunities but their goalkeeper was superb and saved so many shots. We went to the break 1-all after Mitch O’Keefe scored a good goal.

“Then Ben (Genardini) scored the winner with about 10 to go, a really good goal.”

While Sawtell’s goalkeeper earned plenty of plaudits Davis thought Brendan Fergie and O’Keefe were his best in a good team effort.

Tamworth FC coach Wayne May thought his side played “really well” despite losing 5-1 to Byron Bay Rams.

“They are a quality side but the score line wasn’t a true reflection of the game” May said.

“They scored two early, soft goals before we came back with a good strike down the right from Michael Foster. Scott May set it up with some good lead up work. We were back in the game and putting it to them. But about 20 minutes into the second half they scored from a corner and then we (Jarryd May) missed a penalty that might have got us back into it. We then pushed three up front and that left a few holes up the back and they capitalised with two soft goals.

“But if we can replicate that game in the PL we’ll go all right this season.

“I was pretty happy with that performance.”

Brent May was FC’s man of the match playing in front of defender Robert Jeffery, who also impressed along with midfielder Scott May.

“Everyone put in though,” May said.

“I thought it was a great team effort.”

He also congratulated OVA on its win and hopes they can reap more success in the Solo Cup as the final PL representative.
