He scored the first goal of 2006, a screamer against Costa Rica IIRC. It's a shame that he has to play on the left for the national team, would be good to see how he would do if he played at RB as he does for Bayern. Not that he's bad on the left of course...
Afro, I agree that no Australian would get into the first XI but in regards to the squad (which Schmich said), what about
Wilkshire over Aogo? Neill over Badstuber? Schwarzer over Wiese/Butt? Cahill over Traesch?
But maybe I'm wearing green and gold glasses aswell. :?

Yup - I though he just took 2006 by the scruff of the neck and was one of the main driving forces in getting to the final 4

Lahm has probably been the best fullback in the world over the last five or six years. Anybody watching Bundesliga and the german side knows this.

Agree with Afro. Maybe a little cruel on Schwarzer and a little kind to Kennedy with how small the gap but on the whole, you're right. Think most people here, myself included are wearing green and gold glasses. And possibly green and gold classes too.

If you really think a single australian would make it into their squad except perhaps Cahill you're dreaming. They're superior in every area.
Schweinsteiger > Kewell Mertesacker >>>>>> Neill Lahm >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Chipperfield Rolfes>>>>>>>> Wilkshire (even if he isn't in the squad, swap Rolfes with Hitzelsperger) Ballack>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Bresciano Muller>>>>>>>>>>>>> McDonald Klose>>>>> Kennedy Neuer>>>>>>Schwarzer (And yes, I know Schwarzer is in the fucking europa league final, ok?)
Take your bloody green and gold classes off.

Hey Schimch Schwarzer, Cahill, Neal, Wilkshire for sure and maybe at least one more of our goalies and others might make the squad. Dont underestimate the socceroos as the Cro's and Japan and for that matter the cheating Italians did in the last world cup!! Cop that!!

"IF" we do play moore in central defense, Neil better be ready to cover his ariel assignments as Lahm will drop crosses on his head all game. Ballack is a master of getting his head onto the ball and scoring, and Moore will prob be the slowest player on the pitch.
I am not confident, but crossing everything for an upset (that means a draw at least :d )

A formidable foe but a very average German team and at least one of there goalkeepers is a complete clown and poor in many areas. None are in the same class as Schwarzer.Sorry Eurosnobs ths is a weak German team in comparison with the past. Upsets on the cards!!

Heres hoping for a Klose - Podolski partnership up front. Schwarzer wont even have to put his gloves on. Low has let his own personal agenda come infront of the German cause and they will be punished as a result.

It's germany's first game of the tournament. They'll score one in the first half and sit back, get a feel for things and score the winner after about 75 mins.

My prediction: It will similar to Confederations cup 05, Germany 4 - Australia 2. Craig Moore training in the State League is no good. I'd rather put in Milligan or Spira in there. We will concede at least 2 goals without a doubt.

Quote:The main positive I see from this is that I'd rather be facing *this* German side than the one from the previous 3 World Cups. Tbh, I think this one is stronger. They've finally found some consistency at Center back and they've got some very prolific strikers there, they've got keepers out the wazoo and a midfield with Ballack, Schweinsteiger, Trochowski, Kroos, Ozil and Khedira is very, very strong. That said, Klose is only there on reputation alone and I don't know why Hitzelsperger isn't in the squad.

Test out their second-string keepers... Culina, Bresciano, Carney, Oar... plenty of shots from distance. Even at sea-level I'm expecting this ball to fly like never before. Hope for a fumble, Timmy Cahill or even Scotty McDonald streaming into the box, lash it into the back of the net. Quite frankly I think it's our best chance for a goal.
Schwarzer's gonna have to have a blinder at the other end, but he usually does. Gonna have to hope that Lukas Podolski and Miroslav Klose fail to fire. If that happens then Germany will struggle for goals.
I really like the look of Philipp Lahm. He's been fantastic for Bayern, those runs into the box are exhilarating. I hope Chippers and Carney are paying close attention because they're gonna have their work cut out for them.

The main positive I see from this is that I'd rather be facing *this* German side than the one from the previous 3 World Cups.
That said those previous 3 World Cups saw them make a Quarter Final, a Final and a Semi Final so the hopes will be equally high for this lot.
I think we can snatch a result of Germany, but the more important thing is that even if the boys can't they don't let it affect them when we come up against Ghana.

Lots of young guys, will be interesting if they can step up to the plate. Think no Hitzlsperger is a blessing for us. Like the OP says, it's not the scariest German team I've seen - probably weaker across all positions than they have been for a long while.

It is a fairly descent squad and although Klose and and Podolski have had less than memorable seasons, the German Squad plays well together and I will not be suprised to see them both scoring well. as for Arial attack, there are few in the world no matter how tall that can out Jump our Timmy. The man is a freak.

Zee Germans!
Agreed a formidable lineup, perhaps not as many household names as '06 but strong none the less. We've got our work cut out...

Still very strong. With all the young talent like Badstuber, Muller, Kroos, Beck, Khedira and Marin the future is bright for Germany
