I wish our players hailed from those kind of teams. Ah well I think were in with a shot. As long as Tosic doesn't get away with any crazy antic. on there names. They have a Mrdja a Rukavina a pantelic a lekic Only a few letters away from being a few A-league players in that squad. What do you think about the FourFourTwo article Antic Names Serbia Squad? SERBIA coach Radomir Antic included six England-based players in his provisional 30-man World Cup squad.Have your say.

@tommycash: not surprising on both accounts (Serb influence on Aussie football is well documented and I think you'll find as the Socceroos profile grows, more of our players will be based at big clubs. We are still a relatively unknown quantity outside of England.

I am about as scared of them as I am of Heineken!! Not!! Big reputations and hostile press count for nothing in a one off elimination. Nothing to fear but fear itself!!

These guys only beat Faro Islands and Lithuania by one goal during their WC qualification. We should be respectful, but nothing to fear, as we better on our day.

Raddy Antic = Luton Town Legend, Maine Road May 1983
I just hope Raddy doesn't do to the Socceroos what he did to Man City 27 years ago!

We can beat Serbia however it's unlikely lets be honest Australia would kill to have players at Inter, Man U and Chelsea...

It's a 27-man provisional squad not a 30-man provisional squad. Isailovic, Sulejmani, Lekic & Mrda should be cut from that list. Also, Kevin M08 get your facts straight, Serbia beat Lithuania 3-0 and beat the Faroes 2-0 on both ocassions, the French beat the Faroes by a goal. Stojkovic didn't play against Chelsea, but did play against Hull last monday and was catastrophic (Biggest weakiness in Serbia squad). Bad luck to former Glory keeper Milan Jovancic who narrowly missed out after debuting against Japan in April.

i think the key to the serbians will be their defence with the likes of subotic, vidic and ivanovic surely closing down a lot of our attacks with ease, but on the other front they arent that well regarded for their attacking prowess, and dont have any top top strikers like they do defenders. so long as we keep them out of our own net we are in with a chance.

Over the last 5-6 years Australia has consistently overachieved on the world stage against teams comprising better individual players. Our boys play as a real team and will do anything and play any position for the greater good of the team. Games are not played on paper and our boys will not give a toss about reputations. I'm tipping the Serbs to implode again on the world stage. Edited by KevinM08: 12/5/2010 04:58:05 PM

thank you Sydney Croatia 58 for showing our mate Kevin M08 the fact that we already qualified when losing to Lithuania who were given 2 dodgy penalties in a match that was later reviewed by UEFA for match-fixing allegations. Kevin M08 besides the fact that you beat a strong Uruguay team in 05 and the a ten man dutch team, missing the likes of Sneijder, Robben and Van Persie who else have u beaten thats got a better squad on paper to you.

As a Serb, I must say that Australia does not scare me at all. Technically, Australia is the least technically skilled squad in the group, but one thing Australia has more so than any other team is the fighting spirit.

On paper they are a better side than us but putting good players together doesn't alway equal good team. Read Madrid proved that. Plus Australia lost to/struggled against lower ranked Asian teams.
Anything can happen in football

Australia has balls and there big as the serbs will find out. Vidic is a butcher and has often been sent off for rash tackles my prediction is he will implode at some time in the world cup. Could be against Australia bringing down Cahill or Kewell in the box!! Remember the serb that laughs at us first may not get the last laugh!!

Jagos Vukovic (PSV), Slobodan Rajkovic (Twente) and Nemanja Tomic (PArtizan) have been added to the squad so its now a 30 man squad! And I have gotta say these lads that keep saying Australia will defeat Serbia and that Vidic is a butcher must not forget how strong your team is ROFL I mean Craig Moore, Jade North and who ever plays at the back, Come on you have to joking ay? No offence but this aussie squad is probably one of the weakest in history tbh. The team that lost out to Iran in 98 was stronger. If PvB was at all ambitious and smart the bloke would have called up Ognjeovski who is a physical rock ion the defence.
3:0 Serbia

lunartemis i think Serbia proved that they are a team, they played well together the whole qualifying campaign. I honestly think the whole group will be close, anything can happen.
Ognjeovski definetly should have been brought into the squad, same as Joel Griffiths!

Ok seriously guys I am not beign arrogant but I believe that Australia has more of a chance of imploding than Serbia. In the first game you'll a similar game you played against the Dutch last year, but the only diffrence will be is that the Germans will be two gears more than the dutch were that night.

At a guess I'd say it will be Wilkshire, Neill, Williams and Emerton across the back for Australia. The aussies have a decent side there. The thing is, Verbeek doesn't know how to use them. 3:0 Serbia Who and who? Serbia have a good team there, but outside of their main players they have as much skill as Australia.

Well, looking at the Serbian squad on paper, I'm not that worried. However, when I saw Serbia's B-Team up close and personal smashing Japan in Osaka, I gotta say, I was sweating bullets. I was thinking, "my god, if this is the Serbia's SECOND team, how can Australia compete with the first team?" However, it was indeed a friendly against Japan and Japan had nothing to gain and the players playing for Serbia had everything to gain (World Cup consideration selection). Also, a few of Japan's best players were out and/or overseas. I will reserve my judgement on the Serbian National team until the stakes are higher. It amazes me that even though Serbia is fielding a team full of really good players playing for big teams (Chelsea, Valencia, Liverpool, Lazio etc), they still don't have a world class goalkeeper. Now, admittedly, I don't have much knowledge of Vladimir Stojković, but surely all the loans he's been given to other clubs is an indication that he isn't a very good player? Interesting that Serbia's weak spot (Goalkeepers) is an area where Australia is probably at its strongest. Australia always has a tendency to produce really good goalkeepers which is something I find baffling. I just wish Australia could produce some nice, selfish forwards as good as we produce goalkeepers. Piksi_10 wrote:As a Serb, I must say that Australia does not scare me at all. I'm sure most people from other countries probably dismiss Australia's tendency to punch above our weight as 'luck.' We do have a knack and hunger to kill giants, that's for sure. Australia's tall poppy syndrome going into overdrive. I guess it must be our convict origins or something to 'stick it to the man.' I for one hope the Serbian team don't realize this and underestimate us. We can then most likely fly under the radar and poach a few goals or two. Never give up, never surrender. :)
