THE Marconi Stallions were the big winners in the weekend’s NSW Premier League, extending their competition lead with a 2-1 win over the West Sydney Berries.

Goals from Alex Canak and Tim McGowan helped Marconi over the line in the round 12 clash at Sydney Olympic Park.

Marconi coach Lee Sterrey said his side was lucky to win on Sunday.

“We stopped playing for the first 20 minutes of the second-half,” he said.

“After they scored I took a punt and replaced a defender to chase the game and it paid off for us.

“In that period, they could have come up with one or two goals but we were happy that we came away with the one that counts.”

Fairfield’s NSW Premier League sides remain in the top three spots on the competition ladder, with the Bonnyrigg White Eagles below the Stallions in second place.

Bonnyrigg jumped from third to second spot after a 3-1 win over the South Coast Wolves at WIN stadium on Sunday.

Also on Sunday, Sydney United dropped one place to third after a 1-all draw with the Rockdale City Suns at Bicentennial Park South.

Despite holding the lead for most of the match, a late goal from Rockdale’s Peter Apolevski tied the scores.

Sydney United player-coach David Zdrilic was disappointed with the result.

“We have dropped points on too many occasions this season where we have been ahead and dominating matches, and we have done the same thing tonight,” he said after the game.

“I was happy enough with the first-half considering we took the lead, though really we had chances to kill off the match in the second-half and failed to do so.”
