full strength ghana team or experimenting? What do you think about the FourFourTwo article Holland Hammer Ghana? LIVERPOOL'S Dirk Kuyt sent Holland on their way to a crushing friendly 4-1 victory over disappointing Ghana in Rotterdam overnight.Have your say.

They are The Netherlands, not Holland.
Holland is in the North of the country and to call the whole country Holland would be like referring to Australia as Queensland. Go Queensland in the World Cup!
As you can tell, my family comes from the South.

He, you learn something new every day, and I've learned something new before breakfast. :) To think that when the Dutch named Australia 'New Holland,' they were really calling it, 'new Upper Netherlands.' :p Anyway, as for the Ghana result, I've only got one thing to say:

As you can tell, my family comes from the South. Actually Holland is in the West, not the North. I also don't know anyone who cares if you call it Holland, despite the fact that all my family are Gelderlanders.

tomw, well it is actually North-West but my family is from Limburg so its north for me. Also, my Dad didn't like the country being called Holland because of the various connotations that it implied.
As I understand it, the issue with calling the country Holland is a North/South thing so I'm not sure where Gelderland fits into it.
I don't know much about it to be honest but I believe the issue comes from the divide of the country between the prosperous protestant north and the poorer catholic south and the sentiments that go along with such a divide.

All my Dutch family call it "Holland" when speaking English. I thought "Holland" meant the whole main European section of the "Kingdom of the Netherlands" (and wiki seems to agree). Anyway I'd be very curious to see the line-up of Ghana for the match, in fact a replay would be nice. edit: Hmm actually seems I'm wrong: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netherlands_(terminology) for info Edited by phreeky: 2/6/2010 05:25:49 PM
