Mystery surrounds Australia squad for World Cup 2010 as deadline passes

Mystery surrounds Australia's final 23-man squad for the World Cup after coach Pim Verbeek held back making any public announcement about which players he is cutting from his line-up.

The deadline for the final squad lists to be submitted to Fifa has now passed, with Australia the only nation still outstanding.

It remains unclear whether Verbeek did submit his final list to Fifa before the deadline, and is talking to the players cut before making the news public, or whether he is waiting for medical reports on any injuries arising from their 1-0 friendly win over Denmark before finalising his squad.

With Eugene Galekovic, Tommy Oar and James Holland already told they will not be in South Africa, Verbeek has to cut two more players. The other nations in Group D have all confirmed their 23-man squads.

I don't think there's much of an alternative is there?

meh, stupid UK press. He submitted the list to FIFA but said he wouldn't go public till he'd had a chance to talk to the players who will miss out.

Oar, Rhys Williams, Shane Lowry, James Holland and Eugene Galekovic were the players downsized.

Bad luck for Rhys and Lowry.

i had to find out from brisbanetimes of all places.

I didn't think garcia was going to get cut. It seemed to me that Pim was giving garcia all the time in the world to get back into the team with his injuries etc.

We didnt see williams take part in the last two friendlies. something you'd probably would have expected considering Pim had gone out of his way to get the player into the green and gold but at least now we can go forward and support the final 23 into making pass the group stages :D

so it seems it was due to injuries that he is no longer part of the 23. I wonder if he was injury free would he still have made the 23? Not that it matters anymore!

Sucks. I was looking forward to seeing how Lowry went. Ah well. Guess he's been untested at a national level. Hopefully I'll get to see him at the Asian Cup. :)

Garcia is almost a second striker don't be surprised if he isn't the man to alternate with Cahill...I think Garcia will see game time.
