I find it quite interesting to see how 'attacking' play has evolved over time. The modern game has become quite about turning defence into offence as quickly as possible, which in turn forces defenders to take their posiioning and man marking to a whole new level, which forces attackers to be more than just pace, etc etc
In doing some research over the history of the game and it's formations I used an American article which I think was originally designed for aspiring coaches - it talked of the strengths and weaknesses of various formations, and the incredible tactical battles that resulted when a new formation was developed - Hungary v Germany was a particular highlight.
