I guess the bandwagon isn't so bad. What do you think about the FourFourTwo article World Cup $800m Oz Pay Day? AUSTRALIANS will splurge more than $800 million into the national economy during the World Cup, regardless of whether the Socceroos qualify for the Round of 16.Have your say.

And hosting the WC in this country is bad how?
Imagine those figures PLUS all the tourists and overseas fans that make the trek here.

i wish we could get a a match of the day on sbs or something for the a-league. I don't have foxtel anymore and it makes it harder for me to watch a-league games across australia.
Are sydney pubs likely to show these foxtel only games? because i'll be in need of some glory fix over here.
Otherwise, I like the fact we're benefitting from the hype of the world cup and i'm sure clubs will take full advantage of it this time round with the experience of the last world cup gone by.
It'll be a very good year for soccer in australia esp if we do well against the likes of germany, ghana and serbia.

melbvictory87 To claim that AFL is a nothing ganme is outrageous. These type of emotional responses are just plain stupid and show a Heineken like ignorance of anything that can't be understood. AFL may not be a World Game but in Australia it is king if revenue and attendances are anything to go by. It will be King and remain so for a long time yet and no amount of lambasting it will solve the problem. This only serves to satisfy your personal psycho/social/sexual needs nothing else.

Who needs fiscal stimulus packages when all you have to do is have a world cup? And as for scars look up the multiplier effect. That will probably help explain somewhat how this is good for the average joe.

Ha ha funny shit . . . Freud! Based on your previous comments on this site, such as "postmodernist relativism" , "perspective", "morals", continuously commenting/bagging Heinekin and others, you obviously have some psychology knowledge. Wow dude. Many of us have Psych degree's dude . . . you obviously lack the perspective you need to be useful. What are you 1st, 2nd year, avid reader? Complain about "these type of emotion responses", then write this? Seems like someone else is trying to get those same personal psycho/social/sexual needs satisfied. Fuck knows how that is realistically obtained? ? Any ways, letting go of the shit/bagging you continually paste, your right in regards to AFL. AFL is not a nothing game, it's by far the best attended/supported game in this country. I support it and League, bitchin about what's the best game is just a waste of time and arrogant. They are totally different, and classing those who play/follow each is fucked. This story just highlights how far football has come in this country. It'll keep growing . . . from there who knows? Good stuff. Edited by joeb76: 9/6/2010 07:30:01 PM

AFL fans are not used to the slower scoring pace of football. they like non-stop action and scoring. for (the majority) of them, nothing else beats AFL, and for them, the other sports can suck a dick.
I got a mate of mine who always gives me shit about "soccer", and in turn i just give him shit about "AFL".
but this is what the AFL wants, a retailiation from football fans, so they can make us look like the bad guys. don't fall for it.
know what would be killer? before the start of the germany match, the socceroos go out and warm up with a footy and stark taking marks :P thtat would make the germans go "WTF?"

As someone who follows both AFL and Football quite closely these sort of responses just prove to me that plenty of idiots follow both sports.
Football doesn't need to be "better" than AFL. It doesn't even need to be more popular. So long as it's popular and accessible and is good to watch then that's all that matters.
After all I wouldn't be surprised if plenty of AFL players have an interest in Football, and Aussie Football players have an interest in AFL. When I was playing Australian Rules regularly we'd sometimes warm up kicking the round variety around.
