Wasn't expecting much, but it turned out to be pretty good. Tom Cruise was pretty good in the lead role and Rosamund Pike is a babe. Very enjoyable. The Hobbit wasn't bad. But I prefered the LOTR series. Jack Reacher is fail because of Tom Cruise. Reacher in the Lee Child Book. Reachher is meant to be 6ft plus tall and absoloutly built. Who do they cast for the role? Tom Cruise. ](*,)

Really mixed reaction to Gangster Squad so far. Only 47% on RT with an average rating of 4.9/10.

The reviews I've read have said it's a bit over the top and the story is average- but nearly all the reviews have said Brolin, Gosling, Stone and Penn are all really good. Still keen to see it.

The core of it seems to be that it's a 21st century blockbuster rendition of The Untouchables.

The Hobbit is an awesome book without anything being added. I would add, that after studying story structure and creative writing for the best part of my life, there is no need to spend more than 4 hours telling that story. With Lord of The Rings he had to leave a lot out in order to get it into 3 very long movies, I can understand his frustration... Don't get me wrong - looking forward to it - just find it funny that he has opted to go out and find other material to stretch this one out to justify another trilogy. Finally got round to seeing it... As I suspected it would be - at least 60 minutes of unrequired material to fill it out. Knew I was in trouble the second Frodo showed up - absolutely no point in having his scene in there, we already know it's a prequel to LOTR, we've already linked Old Bilbo to Young Bilbo via the drawing in the front of the book. Should have jumped straight from the (added) prologue about Smaug's arrival to Young Bilbo meeting Gandalf. At other times, particularly the fight/chase with the Goblins, I felt like I was watching King Kong with action sequences that ran 5 minutes instead of 3. Even with all the added stuff there's not enough material there to warrant three three hour films. The only excuse is that the battle of the 5 armies and the battle for battle of Dol Guldur, which will no doubt be HUGE Helm's Deep style sequences in the other two films, probably need to be split up to do them justice, which would make for pacing problems in a single film or a two-parter. Also, and I don't mean to be petty (but I am) - (no spoiler here) - if you plan to use someone as a decoy, running in the same direction as he runs is never the best idea. While I agree that there is stuff in there that didn't need to be there you are right that it was put in there to help give the bigger sequences later more attention. I would of preferred that they tried to link some aspects of Tolkien's (son or otherwise) notes/other works into the tale as well. Still, all in all I love it and would gladly snap up more Middle Earth when it's on tap. Would love to see other back stories done as well one day, things like Children of Hurin etc. -PB

Tbh, I think both of those films were more down to stellar acting performances than any directorial work.
