Australia will probably get the last laugh against Ghana. They really aren't that much chop.

It's amazing the perceived level of ignorance each of our sides have for each other! The phrase, "we don't know quite what to expect against them, but we know they are a good team" seems to come out often from near every player from Group D about another side.

Australia, Serbia and Ghana certainly ALL are unknowns, especially in relation to each other, in some way, especially compared to football power like Germany, who everyone knows, especially in this group where in each every team has some kind of connection, relationship with German football, pretty much. Players who play in the Bundesliga or have played in, some players of dual German nationality, coaches who may also have experience in Germany or from similar football cultures etc... Aswell as the general exposure of the Bundesliga, like Bayern Munich and notability of many of Germany's stars.

And it's interesting that Joachim Low made some pretty apt comments about Australia's playing style in another article, about our being soo organised defensively that we're essentially boring and many sides have trouble breaking us down. lol He's not wrong.

BTW Muntari has had some troubles in the Ghana camps of past, in regards to discipline, he was even omitted from a squad or two, or missed a squad or two, relating to that sort of behaviour? But it 'seems' they have sorted things out now, now the main event is here. Same goes for a few of the African teams and their 'troublesome stars.'

Ha, he didn't even mention us, top notch dismissal. Interestingly . . . the Roo's aren't really mentioning Ghana or Serbia too much at all, good focus.

BTW Who knows, Muntari might be in for some niggle, come when we play them?! Especially from the galling Grella of grim and ungainly consequence. :P

New Zealand dominated us at home. You can't read too much into any one friendly match. Ghana are a strong side and will be tough to beat, but don't get me wrong I think we have a good chance of winning, and can't wait to rub it into my ghanian mates \:d/ Might even watch the game with them :)

I happened to be in Germany at the time the WC draw was being done. I watched it on German TV. Immediately after the draw, the German sports program had mini documentaries all prepared for Ghana and Serbia, and so I was waiting to see what the mini documentary on Australia would look like but .. guess what .. no documentary on Australia. Not even worth a mention. Folks, that sums up where Australia is regarded by German sports TV.

I think it's brilliant, the more of this sort of stuff from our opposition the better. It will only help to fire our guys up and result in the other teams being complacent facing such a lowly side as Australia.

I am getting so pumped now, can't wait for it all to start.

everyone is getting stuck into the african sides as if they're shit, at best australia will draw with ghana and germany...but i have a feeling the socceroos will put one over the serbs if ghana put it over them. Yes i'm ghanaian but personally know a couple of the socceroos squad..all both the lesser rated squads in group D need is a bit of luck against the germans. First goal mid way through the first half, second goal at the end when they Ghana push forward. Just to display that I know nothing about football, Mr big shot, Ghana are a lot more organised, under their Serb coach, than they have previously been. But still not organised enough for international tournament football. They are mntally weak, and the fact that their "star" is out of the tournament, will be playing on their already weak mentality.

No, to be fair, Australia's preperation has not been the best either, but Australia have the mental resiliance, and team cohesion, to toughen it out. I am not sure that Ghana have the same mental strength. In fact, I am almost positive that they dont. Almost.... :)

Australia may have that mental strength, but under Verbeek they've lacked that cohesion, and I'm unconvinced whether it's going to be enough to counter a full-strength Ghana's athletic ability.

australia is handling the world cup the way teams are supposed to - i havent seen any of them make comments about serbia or ghana or making it to the second round. theyve only spoken about germany - theyre taking it one game at a time, which is what teams should be doing.

ghana is overconfident. that doesnt mean they will lose, but it means that australia have an advantage already. lets hope they can make the most of it.

They haven't commented about any of the other games because they haven't been asked about anything but the Germany game. Everyone wants to know how we're going to do against Germany.

i dont think any teams in this group have a garentee of making it through to the group stage germany have a very strong squad but lack a little bit of workman ship and serbia also have a very telented list of players but are very unconsitent and i'm not quite sure but i think ghana won the african cup of nations with pretty close to an under 23's squad, however australia can be very dangours side in attack ie. win over irland 3-0 and irland are no dud's. australia should not be taking lightly and i think they have a good chance of getting into the group stage :) GO SOCCEROOS :)

AfromanGT - That may be the case.... If Ghana were actually full strength. Its not just Essien missing. As with Australia, many of Ghana's leaders are seriously struggling.
And Australias cohesion on the pitch is not really what I was referring to. The Aussie squad has been predominatly the same for quite a while, and the players refer to themselves as a family. They will fight for each other even after the tank is empty.

In some ways, you were right and Cahill probably is going to have a hard time but Ghana are left wanting when it comes to width and Wilkshire, Kewell and co are going to be able to take advantage of that bringing the ball forward out wide.

I don't like our chances of beating Ghana not because I don't know where our goals are going to come from, but because their midfield is incredibly athletic.

Alot of the Australian boys, aswell as the Australian media (Craig Foster article on it) and even us, heck even those who hardly follow our game (Bandwagoners you might say - though some of these I would more call 'well wishers'), have all often commentated on Australia's strong fighting spirit. It's that kind of 'battler mentality,' 'backs to the wall,' 'underdog,' 'love a challenge,' 'cut down those tall poppies,' 'we're inferior to nobody,' 'shove it up 'em,' 'determined to earn their respect,' 'respect nobody/reputations mean nothing,' 'fight to the end,' 'never give up,' 'we're always a chance,' 'cup is MORE than half full, it's overflowing!' all that kind of stuff.

All this stuff does is further fuels that. Let's just hope Grella doesn't get too carried away, when Muntari 'the red flag' appears before his fired up studs!

Incidently, as we well know, our Kiwi bros also feed on this, and may surprise some, with their potential to trip up some of their group opponents, though unfortunately for them they don't have the base skill level in their squad's talent pool, sufficient enough to truly challenge (To progress from their group), despite the influx of a former Danish Under 21 player in the very Kiwi Winston Reid, a former English youth international (Tommy Smith) and former Scottish youth international (Michael McGlinchey).

they have been asked, because ive read several articles where they touch on serbia and ghana but very briefly, but never comment on the actual games approaching. it shows a good focus and determination.

Ghana will not beat Australia my head tells both teams wont make it out of the group. Serbia are going to beat Ghana Germany are probably going to smash us.

The English podcast commentariat don't seem to have written off Australia mostly saying that Group D is the toughest to pick first and second with some saying that Serbia have a good chance of finishing in first place. If that were the case you'd have to say that second place is anybodies.

They tend to discount non-European sides and Sth American sides outside of BRA and ARG

this guys a joke. the majority of their team is from the ghanian league and sure there isn't too much to go on as to whether australia, ghana or serbia will be the best of the 3 (germany will take first of course) other than that australia has beaten ghana, which in my mind makes us at least a prediction of 3rd in the group, if not 2nd.

The truth of the matter is Ghana is a top quality side and this game could act as the banana skin for the socceroos. One slip up and its over against them. I also see this similar to Japan vs Socceroos in Germany, if Australia gets one goal we can run away with it. Ghana are known at time not always to become complacent after conceeding and start making errors.

Mental strength is where this group will be either won or lost.

the guy didnt even mention aust. maybe his comments are designed purely to build motivation ahead of their crucial first game against serbia. lets face it, as annoying as it is to face germany first up, whoever loses out of serbia ghna face a massive uphill battle.

In this group, anyone can beat anyone. germany are favourites based on history, but predictions will just be the luck of the draw. A missed chance, bad tackle, offside or wonder strike is likely to decide the group.

I actually think it's great to have Germany first up. If we lose, it's not really a big deal because they're expected to win, and will likely beat Serbia and Ghana as well. If we get a point, then it gives us a small advantage, and if we somehow pull off a win, then it's a huge boost going into the other two games.

Very cocky, but I think these comments from Ghana and Germany will come back to bite them i defenatly think we will beat ghana they arnt that crash hot!

They touch on it because they players have addressed it. But generally people aren't asking about Ghana and Serbia. The media are more interested in Germany's reputation for success.

I dont' know about a point being mandatory. But if we can keep it to a one goal loss, that's a great result for us because chances are it will come down to GD to get out of this kind of group.
