Mark Schwarzer reckons Australia’s reputation as an emerging football nation is on the line at the World Cup.

The Aussies stunned everybody four years ago in Germany by making it to the knockout stages, losing to eventual winners Italy in the round of 16.


Australia face Germany tonight – and Fulham keeper Schwarzer, 37, says nothing less than a repeat in South Africa will do.


The Aussie No.1 said: “Reaching the last World Cup and the way we then performed there helped us get the recognition we probably deserved.


“But you are only rated as good as your last performances.


“We can’t live on our success in Germany – we have to build upon it.


“We have done part of that job by qualifying for South Africa but it is by no means finished.


“In fact, it is only just beginning. We are ranked among the world’s top 25 countries and have to make sure that we are still in there after the finals.”
