Everyone will probably disagree with me but I think in order for Australia to progress as a footballing nation we must not progress any further. There are numerous reasons why I believe this, but basically after this World Cup its the end of an era in Australian Football.
If we get through to the round of 16 then it will only create delusion. Quiet frankly we don't deserve to progress. The team is diabolical. I can't fathom how a team can be trailing in a WC lose a man and put there forth defensive midfielder on. I can't understand how Richard Garcia can play up front when half of his caps for his country have come in our last three games and he's been injured all season. I have no fucking clue while Craig Moore gets to play over the other defenders Australia have. I think Colosimo, Ognovski or even some younger CB would have been more beneficial. I don't understand how our game play consisted of crossing but our big target man is on the bench, why is Cahill, a player notorious for feeding off crumbs the one that has to play as target man? This is just the tip of the iceberg, and we can't fix any of it until Pim is replaced.
To be fair to the boys, Germany played the best performance of any team in the WC so far, they were really well drilled.
Pim is just too one dimensional and everything he has done has been poor and has cost us this chance. His choice in players, formation, tactics is all rubbish.
I think the WC is a wasted chance not for us to do well but to give our youth some vital experience. Instead we have sent out a bunch of hacks that have had there time and we will achieve nothing.
I can't wait for the WC to be over (for Australia) as the winds of change (Pim fucking off) hopfully will lift us in the right direction, and guide the new generation to even better feats than the last.

Very Nietzsche like interpretation of the current situation.
Would a complete failure generate enough drive by the FFA to fast track necessary player development and coaching reforms?

This is exactly what I was thinking, on one hand you naturally want them to do well and progress, but if they do(which I cant see them doing) by some miracle, it's hard to say they will have deserved to be there over Ghana or Serbia. If in fact they do go on to round of 16 it will not only vindicate the awful picks, squad, tactics, culture etc. of the current squad but again give the Australian public the guise of a successful, forward thinking footballing nation, which after last night's performance we can see that it isn't. A final 16 birth would also allow the FFA to continue their fascination with Dutch coaches, and perhaps give them the idea that 2nd string coaches can and will get the job done, free of criticism. It could also delay any reform the game needs at grassroots and developmental levels. Perhaps if we're thrashed it'll give birth to another shakeup like the crawford report, but obviously on a smaller scale.

Edited by Dogsdogsdogs: 14/6/2010 11:17:03 PM Reforms have been made at youth/grassroots level, but they will take time to start producing talent. Our current senior crop can only play to tactics setup by the manager whether there dutch etc. So to be honest i dont think having our ass raped during the Cup will do anything positive here, it will just give rival codes another cheap shot at Football.

As Dan the Red said alot of changes have been made but a complete reworking of the entire system takes time. Edited by tyson_85: 14/6/2010 11:49:29 PM

I disagree with most of what you said and the question posed by arthur but yes a new coach will breath new life into the team but.... We've had tonnes of failures!?! Were you even old enough to know about 1993? 97? 2001? I swear Japan didn't learn anything new after its 'failure in 2006'. why stop there, we should have failed to make this world cup! Most of the problems you have with the team is due to Pim and his coaching style and shouldn't be pointed at the socceroos team who on their best day can still put on a performance.
To an extent, the failure to sign a top class coach has caused concern for the FFA and as such have released more money but I don't believe failure in the group is going make them realise anything new.
Most people know that the next few years will be different in that our 'golden generation' will be all but gone and that a new breed will step in over the next few years - keep in mind that the FFA is only a few years old. There's no way sending in youth that aren't any better than the older much experience players would have done any better against germany with the coach you despise. SO much alarmist talk over the last few hours! lol
As far as I'm concerned the national team needs to win games to get the support that we need, its the a-league, asian cup and the asian champions league that we need to do more experimenting in and getting the support at grass roots level!
There are new rules coming in for youth development, youth teams at a-league levels and we have youth championships to contend with. I believe we need more money for that but that will only come through more sponsorship (and sponsors demand success, they demand exposure) and community support. If you want to support up and coming lads and the players of tomorrow, go to a bloody local game or something?
Failure here at the world cup isn't going to be the end all but its not going to bring about drastic change. the change has already begun and as far as I'm concerned patience is a virtue, so bloody wait and you'll see in a few years time whether or not the a-league, its youth teams, its procedures that they have put in place will work... I feel they are, its a marked improvement over the NSL (though I want glory to be the powerhouse that they once were, haha) and the exposure of the socceroos has been second to none.
Maybe we should have totally failed in 2006? ;)
I was at darling harbour and I heard people chanting "we're going to win the cup". People love winners - enough said.

This is ture, we need to have a failure so we can stop using success as an excuse for resistance to change. The only risk is we may lose some support for the sport

I'm inclined to agree with this, particularly since Pim's tactics will most likely see us perform disgracefully in the other two games.
