Carney doesn't deserve such a low rating, while Bresciano was absolutely garbage. I can clearly see why Pim dropped him for the first game.

Neil Evans - you got no idea. Bresciano is a critcal and alwys contributes to the Socceroos success on the pithc. The goal wouldn't have happened with Bresch free-kick. And Carney did have an ordinary match.
Neill, Moore and Valeri all played well. And Wilkshire will be reliving that 2nd miss for years..

Before the world cup, I was laughed at on this site for suggesting that I wanted Holman to be in the starting XI.
I hope the majority of people who laughed can now see that he is a bloody good player and will possibly be one of our most important players at the next world cup.
Well played Brett.
Cmon Aussies, there is still a chance of progressing!!!!

Schwarzer - 7. Dominated the box and produced a great save down low in the first half. Would be slightly dissapointed with how quickly he went for the penalty.

Wilkshire - 6. Overall typically solid Wilkshire performance but let down by 2 of the 3 key moments, being the Ghanaian goal and the finish when put through by Chippers

Neill - 6.5. Solid and looked to turn defence into attack where possible. Lucas' staggering lack of pace an issue at times but generally made up for it with intellegent positioning.

Moore - 7.5. A Moore performance circe 2006. If this is to be his last game for the national side, I'm glad such a servant got to bow out with such a commanding display. Won just about every defensive header, made several key interceptions.

Carney - 6. Tried to get forward at every chance which exposed the left side in defence. Both you can't have both and he shouldn't be blamed for this.

Emerton - 7. The guy is a machine, would love to see how much distance he covered over the course of the game. Ran at the Ghanaians at every opportunity

Valeri - 8. Socceroo MoM for mine. Future captain.

Culina - 6. No questioning effort but gave away the ball too often in midfield and was pressured too easily by Ghana. Too many lateral and backward passes.

Bresciano 6.5. Can see the fitness returning but still faded, to be expected given his time out. Was great in the first 20 minss while we were on the front foot and great free kick to set up the first goal.

Holman 7 - No doubting his effort and a great 'on-the-spot' goal, but gave the ball away alot when little pressure seemed to be on him. Makes the difficult sometimes look easy and the easy look downright impossible.

Kewell - 3. Not enough time to make an impact. It was a Red card, albiet unfortunate.

---
Chippers - 7. Huge impact off the bench in a more advanced role.

Kennedy - 5. Worried the Ghanain defenders with his height, but sadly not his ability to actually play football.

Rukya - 4. Not enough time to make much of an impact.

Bresciano was fantastic in the first half. But was piss poor in the second. Although fairplay, the Arnold incident was hilarious.

Player ratings for Socceroos

By Guy Hand
07:21 AEST Sun Jun 20 2010

Player ratings for Socceroos' 1-1 World Cup draw with Ghana:

MARK SCHWARZER: Right back to his best as Australia's defence got its mojo back. One great first half save, two more in the second. Nothing he could do about penalty. Rating: 8.

LUKE WILKSHIRE: Mixed bag. Perhaps at fault for the goal in not dealing with threat on right which led to penalty. Worked guts out when reduced to 10 men, then squandered chance to net winner. Rating: 8.

CRAIG MOORE: Commanding at the back and fought off attack after attack as Australia battled a man down. Caught napping as Ghana launched attack which led to penalty. Rating: 7.

LUCAS NEILL: As brilliant as he was poor against Germany. Didn't put a foot wrong either repelling attacks or playing ball out of danger areas. A real captain's game. Rating: 9.

DAVID CARNEY: Surprise selection, and oh, what a pleasant surprise. Solid defensively and gave Ghana no change at all on his watch. Rating: 7.

JASON CULINA: Uncharacteristically coughed up possession a few times in first half, but solid when he needed to be in second. Rating: 6.

CARL VALERI: Didn't do anything wrong and held his own in a match where he was only really asked to play linkman with a feisty Socceroos attack. Rating: 6.

BRETT EMERTON: Bit of a nomad after team was reduced to 10 men, shuffled between right attacking midfield and right back. Okay without being outstanding. Rating: 6.

BRETT HOLMAN: Socceroos' equivalent of a couple of caffeine-laced energy drinks. Scored goal, worked hard in No.10's role, then put in double-shift as lone striker. Surely time for the Brett Holman Is A Joke Facebook page to disappear. Now. Rating: 8.

MARK BRESCIANO: Took clever free-kick which led to goal and buzzed around busily throughout - with mixed impact - to give Holman the support he needed. Rating: 7.

HARRY KEWELL: Just 25 minutes, little impact, and a red card - probably harsh. So much drama, so little recent football. Rating: 5.

Substitutes:

SCOTT CHIPPERFIELD: Excellent when brought on in attacking role - the position he actually made his name. Added energy, created some good chances. Verbeek's best tactical move. Rating: 8.

JOSH KENNEDY: Put himself about when coming on for Holman, reinforcing that perhaps his best work for his country is as an impact player. Rating: 6.

NIKITA RUKAVYTSYA: Late replacement for Wilkshire. No rating.

Kennedy is house if anyother player got the follow striker of Whilkshires shot they would have put that away. Deserved no higher then a 5' Culina should have been subed off Breciano was one of Aus better players Verbeek is shocking coach. Why take whilkshire off?

I thought Bresc was very active and made some good runs, one in particular where he tried to link up with Holman, unfortunately Holman turned it over.
Bresc 7.5 for me.
Schwarzer 8
Kewell was lively, would have got better.
Culina was poor I thought, lost the ball on several occasions, some poor passing 4.5
Emerton 7.5
I thought Carney was a weak point in the first half, had a better second half 5.5
Holman, good goal, very busy, some poor link play and passing 6.5
Suprised with Moore, thought he played very well 7
Neill 6
Wilkshire, should have scored 6
Ruka, not enough time. Should have come on with Josh
Kennedy, good to throw on the last 20 minutes, however lacks ability and definitely not a starter at this level.
Chippers was excellent when he came on, great ball to Wilkshire. Lively header.
Valeri, best performer 7.5

Fairly accurate ratings. Although I would upgrade Valeri to an 8 and downgrade Culina to a 3. Culina was alright in the second half but was pathetic in the first.

^ I agree. I thought Culina was by far our worst performer. He turned the ball over far too often and far too cheaply.

9 out of 10 for the ref, minus 1 for not giving Ghana the win. I thought he was the best contributor to Ghana's attack.

Very big positive to come out of this match imo is Valeri and Holman. Tbh hated both over the last few years but at this world cup they have won me over, top players. Valeri will become a future socceroo captain

Holman was not an 8, sorry but no way. He was back to his usual hard working and poor passing last night which put us under a lot of pressure in the first half. Valeri was the key player for 60-70minutes at which he was then exhausted.

IF Valeri can play 90 minutes he will be a key DM for the future.

In general what frustrated me generally was the lack of pressure on the ghananians. We did the same with the Germans as well and got punished. I would like to see us put more pressure on the opposition players and not allow them to look for the best pass.

We still have a chance but I would concentrate on beating serbia by 3 if possible.

What it means is we will get and attacking Australia? A first.

Would agree with that - with one minor amendment, splitting Craig Moore's performance in two halves... 1st half - 5/10, 2nd half - 9/10. Don't know what happened, perhaps he realised that this was 'the final round' and gave it everything, but first half he was off the pace and slow to everything, second half he was a rock.

Valeri MoM.
Tiredless effort by Holman but again lacked quality on the ball.
I think the Marco and GA incident clearly suggests the rumours of tension weren't far off.

cant believe carney was given a 7 by ninemsn. his pace was good down the flanks but defensively looked risky and gave the ball away a few times. really not sure what to do there chippers gets exposed for pace and carney isnt really up to it.

Bresh one of the few players who can hold the ball. You have to have one in the team at least - eg Bresh, Carle. Emmo okay at it.

Valeri MoM and Holman was fantastic as well. Both have had good World Cups and have been two of our better players. We'll be seeing a lot more of these two in the national side in the years ahead. And hopefully Valeri will get picked up by a Serie A side and Holman will consolidate his position in his Dutch side's starting line-up.
