AGITATED Miners mentor Troy Mundy labelled his team “lethargic” after they were held to a 2-all draw by cellar-dwellers Bundaberg Spirit at Martens Oval on Saturday.

The Miners needed an 87th-minute goal to draw level with the bottom-placed Queensland State League side and Mundy described his team’s performance as

unacceptable.

“I thought we played very

poorly,” he said after the round 13 encounter, in which key man

Graham Harvey suffered a chipped bone in his ankle.

“We seemed to always be a step behind the ball. We were very lethargic.

“Complacency would be one way to describe it.”

After stretching top team Sunshine Coast a week earlier, sixth-placed Whitsunday was generally expected to come away from the Burnett with a trio of competition points.

But a rejuvenated Spirit side, bolstered by recent recruits from the Central Coast, proved a match for the Miners.

“They’ve got a different team from when we played them here in Mackay (a 4-1 win early in round six),” Mundy said.

“They have added speed to their flanks and we struggled to deal with it.”

The Miners failed to mark two men when the Spirit scored first.

After making a break down the right side, their attempt on goal was stopped by keeper Brad Moss, but he was unable to control it and Corey Haack pounced.

The Miners hit back before half- time when Ryan Evetts made a break of his down the right side, crossing to striker Tyson Masters, who found the back of the net with a header from 12 yards out.

The Miners failed to mark their opponents again after the interval and Laurie Stephenson capitalised to put his team in front.

But the visitors salvaged a point when Kyle McBurney’s through-ball found Daniel Scotton in the shadows of full-time.

He turned and thumped the ball low to the right side of the keeper.

Ben Schaper and Masters had late opportunities to snatch

victory.

Mundy said the Miners had “more chances”, but their

resistance proved fragile.

He said his troops will be working hard to shore up their defence and to renew their commitment during the week.

“The team will be getting a bit of a flogging at training this week,” he said.

Desperate for competition points, the Miners will host fifth-placed Far North Queensland this weekend.
