Australia's Kennedy blames coach after exit

SYDNEY (Reuters) -- Australia striker Josh Kennedy said their Dutch coach Pim Verbeek had got his tactics wrong at the World Cup as they arrived back home after their exit.

He added that he was shocked at being left out of the team for the 4-0 defeat by Germany in their Group D opener.

"Definitely I expected to play but it didn't turn out that way," Kennedy told reporters at Sydney Airport on Friday.

"We lost 4-0 so obviously those tactics for that game plan didn't work."

The Socceroos went out of the World Cup on goal difference despite a subsequent 1-1 draw with Ghana and a creditable 2-1 win over Serbia.

Kennedy came off the bench against Ghana and started in the surprise victory over Serbia.

"Me up front with Timmy (Cahill) behind, it's always worked," the Japan-based forward said. "He's always scored or I've always scored goals when we've played together.

"At times it's not the prettiest football but it works. We showed it worked against Serbia."

Cahill insisted Australia could holds their heads high after Germany and Ghana advanced from their group to the last 16.

"People see it as somewhat of a failure but I look at it as we've achieved something, because it was a bad start but we picked it up and did really well," said the attacking midfielder who helped Australia reach the knockout stages in 2006.

"I'm definitely gutted but, the thing is, it is what it is and you've got to get on with it.

"It's probably one of the weirdest experiences for me as a footballer, having such a weird start in the World Cup and nearly being over, to finishing on a high.

"I think there are so many positives, the young guys that came through. Yes, we might have a few older players retiring, but I'm positive for Australian football.

Cahill added: "It's not going to be easy but, the thing is, we've got potential."

Josh wouldnt dare say a word against Pim the brilliant dutch mastermind, if he was still going to be the coach for the asian cup. Dont know if we needed him up front but its fair to say Pim screwed up big time against the Germans.

Its interesting that Cannavaro thinks that the Italian squad lacked quality players, and he doesn't blame Lippi. The Italians earned less points than Australia in a weaker group.

Well of course Josh would say that, he was left off the team in two games in which we lost and drew.

I think if Josh would have played in these two games, the result would have been different.

Joshua Kennedy is an extremely underrated player and it pisses me off that he was left out of the side in those two games.

+1.

The fists of fury are coming out to play, I don't think it's gonna be too long before we start hearing things from the likes of Harry Kewell now that Pim Verbeek is gone. Can see it all coming out in another 60 minutes exclusive.

I think Kennedy clearly showed over the last 6 months that he is not international standard. He is best suited as an impact player. The problem is that we don't have any strikers of international standard though so unfortunately Kennedy gets a guernsey.

yeah Pim got it wrong but i'm not surprised with Kennedy being one of the first to tell it how he saw it.

After all, Pim did drop him after some dreadful performances prior to the world cup opener.
Kennedy did show that when he did eventually came on that his impact off the bench was good and earned himself a spot for the final game. Sure, kennedy has done well over in japan and was warranted a call up but like a few have said previously, Pim obviously got it wrong in the attacking apartment and at times you felt we were missing macca.

Bring on the asian cup. Love to see cahill and kewell on the pitch together ;) (if they are even allowed to get time off from their club)
