England goalkeeper David James is confident that the Three Lions can beat Germany in Sunday's second round clash, with or without the need for penalties.

Speaking to the press, the Portsmouth shot-stopper revealed his belief that Fabio Capello's side have the ability to beat their opponents, as they showed last time the two countries met.

"The intention is to win it in 90 minutes and I'm confident we will do what's needed," James told reporters.

"Germany are a decent outfit but we have got the confidence of having gone to Berlin a couple of years ago and beaten them 2-1.

"For us as a squad it is about 23 men and their strengths and weaknesses. If it goes to penalties there's an opportunity for Germany to miss. The key issue is homework."

The Germans have never been beaten in a World Cup penalty shoot-out, whereas England were beaten in such a manner both in Germany four years ago against Portugal, 12 years ago against Argentina in France, and also at Italia '90 by West Germany.

But James, who has kept two clean sheets since coming in for Rob Green following the opening game against the United States, is confident that should the need for spot-kicks arise, he will be thoroughly prepared.

"We've had videos on penalty takers from the three sides we've played already," continued James, who is playing at his first World Cup finals at the age of 39.

"We'll do our homework on as many of the penalty takers as we can.

"At Euro 2004 in Portugal, I think it has been documented we did not have access to as much information as we could have done, so it is a homework issue and I'm confident we have got that right this time."

The experienced goalkeeper was also keen to play down the social and historical links between the two nations, insisting that the England players would only be focused on the match at hand.

"It's another football match," explained James.

"Obviously there will be a lot of external and historic references. For us, if we get carried away with the fact that it is Germany and the historic aspect, that might be detrimental to our performance."
