Jesus Christ, it's hilarious the eternal optimism that some of you posters show on this forum. As soon as anyone dares to criticise the national team, it's full steam ahead in the defensive boat, labelling them defeatist and all that nonsense.

If we know where we lack, then we know where to work. No point in trying to paint a rosey picture if there are no roses. It's better that we sit down and analyse our weakenesses than the opposition. And, as stefcep has already pointed out, one of our major weakenesses is our inability to hold onto the ball and pass it to a team mate. If we can fix that, then we'll be well on the way to improving the Socceroos exponentially.

I was there as a kid watching Gary Cole fail against the Kiwis for '82, there again when we failed against the Scots, watched Yankos and Olver have a collective brain fade against Israel, as we true to form pumped long ball after long ball to Mitchell and Krncevic, later watched as Muscat's penalty left me with false hope, and was there devastated after the Iran disaster.

Yet some arse-wipe post-2006 blow-ins will claim themselves as "real socceroo supporters" because they sleep draped in an Aussie flag and have a toilet roll dispenser that plays waltzing matilda, but are too stupid to see the failings of our players and therefore what must be done to change the errors of the past.

Its interesting: on TWGF, there are many who are unfairly critical of the Socceroos. Here there are too many unrealistically-positive about their capabilities. They think that helps the game. In fact it hinders it: if you can't see what's wrong, you can't begin to fix it.

I've watched us play with all the heart in the world. ITS NOT ENOUGH. To blame the (foreign) coach and ignore the limitations of the players would be a mistake. We couldn't put one past 10 man Italy. Good teams put 4 goals past 10-man opponents. The second is what we should be aiming to be, not forever stuck on how good an effort the first was. But we're not. We need to ask: "why".

When was the last time the Socceroos got beaten 4-0 and by a team that lost to Serbia and struggled to beat Ghana? Facing our fears my ass.

We are not dirty because we are beyond criticism. We are dirty (or we should be) because what happened in that game against Germany proves Pim Verbeek is out of his depth and not fit to criticise anyone.

Analyse & identify our team's weaknesses, work on improving in those areas & then play to our strengths.

It is not Pim's fault that the players can't pass the ball 20 metres to a team mate. That skill is learnt when you're 5, not 25. Pim can't all of a sudden make the player's have the skills of Lionel Messi. Yes, maybe Pim went in with a defeatist attitude against Germany, but that still doesn't excuse the technical inadequacies that have plagued the Socceroo's for generations. There is a reason why the Viduka's and Kewell's of this world are lauded as heroes, it is because they possess what very few Socceroo's do, and that is a technical ability.

Until this national curriculum is sorted out and we get the right coaching at all levels, we'll never be more than a team that gives a lot of heart. Unfortunately, you need more than that to cut it at international level, and Australian players just do not have it. To lay the blame squarely at Pim's feet is wholly irresponsible when it is the amateur coaches that moulded them you should be criticising.

Guus Hiddink is a great motivator. It is that sort of coach that will get the best out of our limited skill set. The likes of Mourinho or Wenger wouldn't work with the Socceroo's simply because only a handful of the current squad would be able to understand what they want on the pitch. If the FFA wants to keep the Socceroo's chugging along, then they need to hire a motivator, not a coach. The coaches are currently required at junior level.

walnuts, you don't need a national coach to teach the players how to pass, but introducing the correct system and the players can adapt to it and play to their strengths. Look at Guus, we had an average side but looked the goods.

Can even go as far as saying Lavicka did the same at SFC. They looked a rabble with Kosmina, Lavicka comes in and suddenly they can play football.

A great coach can make a bunch of average players into a solid unit. Thats what we need in our next national coach.

Imagine paying a national coach millions to teach the players how to pass the ball to each other. I think we have gone past that stage as a footballing nation walnuts.

the Socceroos need players that are willing to dabble in the flair department... a few Nicky Carle's wouldn't go astray.... we need a South American or Spanish style of play now...

What games did you negative pooters watch? I saw 2 games with 10 men played out of position in the wrong formation against very strong teams. I saw our two best players off the pitch, out of a squad with no quality in depth. I saw us hold a team that is through the round of 16 - and almost qualify if our right fullback was a slightly better striker. I saw a team that doesn't play together as often as most NTs and when they do, have over 48 hours on planes. I watched us beat a fancied european team that topped their qualifying group. Considering all the handicaps, I think the Socceroos have done really well and with a coach and captain who do not write the team off ahead of the first match I see no reason why the same players cannot beat the excellent teams of countries like Japan, South Korea, Iran and Saudi Arabia to win the Asian Cup next year. Also I am positive about the new blood coming through. A few players such as Kisnorbo, Federici and Wilskhire are already good to step up to senior leadership and we may see some developments from players like Oar, Rukavytsya and Djite. I'm proud as hell of the boys, and excited about the future; but you go ahead and wallow in your bitter misery.
