Strachan seems a dick, but why Pim picked Williams in the squad in the 1st place, knowing he was an outside chance of even being able to be fit to sit on the bench, is pretty bad. He's one for the future, but there were others who could have played a part, or been fit enough to do so if needed.

Yes, it's very poor that Strachan kept playing him, but although a young man he is still just that, a man, and therefore he must accept some responsibility for the outcome of all this himself.
