JUNIOR soccer players are staying active in Mackay this week with the start yesterday of the carnivals at Barbour Park in South Mackay.

JUNIOR soccer players are staying active in Mackay this week with the start yesterday of the under-12 Rod Legge and under-13 and 14 carnivals at Barbour Park in South Mackay.

The carnivals follow on from a North Queensland JPL carnivals for under-12, under-14 and under-16 girls that finished on Tuesday.

Wide Bay proved dominant, topping the points table and winning each age group.

Mackay did not enter a team in under-12s, but finished fourth in both under-14 and 16.

It was the second JPL carnival this year, after the opening event in April.

Mackay boys' teams are competing in a similar event in Townsville this week.

Teams from Townsville, Mackay, Burdekin River, Johnson River and Whitsunday are competing in this week's carnivals, which are set to conclude tomorrow.

JPL carnival results, U12: Wide Bay 1, NQ 2, CQ 3, FNQ 4; U14: Wide Bay 1, NQ 2, FNQ 3, Mackay 4, CQ 5; U16: Wide Bay 1, NQ 2, FNQ 3, Mackay 4, CQ 5.
