Maradona -One of the greatest players ever to walk the planet. As a manager, he scrapes what on paper looks like a great side into the World Cup and then they crash out to the Germans.

Apart from Pep, Cruyff, and maybe a couple of others, can you think of any other players who have been top managers?

Well Kaiser won the World Cup as a captain and manager. So I'd put him in your list based on that.

Maradona's has done well with Agrentina - especially in the world cup and i don't think they deserved the 4-0 thrashing they got at the hands of ze germans, however i think he still has a lot to learn, and he needs to put his massive ego aside while he's in a coaching role.

Huh? Do you players or am i reading it wrong. Each coach needs to be judged on results and performance. If he was a good player there is no reason why he can not become a good coach.

Woops... Yeah, I meant that the best players rarely make the best coaches. Coaching is a different beast entirely to playing.

I've had great coaches that have only played the game at local levels, and I've also had coaches who have played for this country that couldn't run a bath.

I would say, and generally of course, that being a great player doesn't give you the right to being a great coach...

Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Rijkard, Clough, Trapattoni, Del Bosque all had pretty good club careers but lets not forget The King, Eric Cantona, champion footballer and current manager of the French Beach Football team.

I don't think that it matters about how talented a footballer they were I mean Mourinho is one of the best managers in the world hands down but was a very average footballer.

I think the better coachs are the ones as highlighted above. These people end up being better readers of the game from the sideline than on, hence make changes or see they need to make a change to stifle the oppositions momentum etc....

Hence Maradona - armed with one of the better talented squads in the cup.....
Why a ex player of the highest talent not plug up the massive hole in their midfield very early in their 2nd half ? in fact do the change at halftime.
The game was slipping away and he was praying for the miracle goal to lift his team it just wasn't going to happen - so he puts on 2 attacking midfielders, why not 1 and the other defensive stick on Schwenstieger ! Oh well doesn't matter his cross to bear now.

I think we have to remember to give a player who goes into coaching the right to get his managerial career going. We all say, that being a good player doesnt mean you will be a good manager. I couldnt agree more, but on the other hand a good player can also become a very good manager. So these young managers need a chance. Look at the majority of the top managers around the world. A lot of them have been around a while and earned respect. They are not young anymore.

To be old and wise, one has to be young and stupid.

I think you're confusing threads mate.
This one is called; Do the best players always make the best coaches? And the general answer is no... Of course there are exceptions to the rule, but by and large they don't...

If everyone read the title as it is, we would have 50 pages of one word answers. NO.

Just a slightly different angle (still the same topic) to actual discuss it rather than just saying no.

Need I say more lol. Anyway, back on topic. Ryan Giggs is completing his badges at the moment. Does anyone think he will make a decent manager. Personally I think he will. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has done very well the last few years with United. I think Giggs will do the same if at United or somewhere else.
