Ballarat Red Devils celebrate another 4-0 win

13 Jul, 2010 09:45 AM

THE Ballarat Red Devils have enjoyed their second 4-0 victory in a row, thrashing Sydenham Park on Saturday.

With the wind and rain blowing towards the La Trobe

Street end, the Haymes Red Devils dominated play in the

Football Federation Victoria state league two match at

Trekardo Park.

As early as the fourth minute the Reds had the ball in the

back of the net but Simon Murphy was flagged offside.

At the other end, Reds keeper Aaron Romein made an

excellent save low down at his post and then saved very well from a free-kick from 25 metres out.

Ballarat finally got the first goal on 33 minutes when

Romein found Paul McClounan in the middle of the pitch and 35 yards out from goal. McClounan smashed a left foot rocket into the net for one of the goals of the season.

At the break, Ballarat coach Michael Leslie was pleased

with the overall performance but disappointed with the

score.

‘‘We were playing well and getting ourselves into good

scoring positions but then we were too eager to give the ball to someone else instead of shooting,’’ he said.

‘‘Sometimes you have to be greedy in front of goals.’’

Sydenham had five corners in the opening 10 minutes of

the second half to pin back Ballarat. The visitors came

close to levelling but Romein made an excellent fingertip

save to push the ball onto the crossbar.

The Red Devils got their second goal after Leigh Sissons

was tripped over in the box and Josh Romein slotted the

ball home.

With their tails up, the Red Devils’ third came soon after.

Sissons flicked the ball to Murphy, who saw his shot

saved, but the rebound fell to Leigh Swinton on the angle

and he thumped the ball home.

The fourth came when Sam Winch found Charlie King,

who had only been on the pitch for five minutes, for a

simple tap in at the back post.

‘‘We set ourselves a target of six points for the week and got them and knocked in eight goals as well, so I’m very happy,’’ Leslie said.
