World Cup 2010: Dutch tactics upset Johan Cruyff

Dutch football legend Johan Cruyff has launched a scathing attack on Netherlands' display in the World Cup final, deriding it as "anti-football".

The Dutch received nine yellow cards, and a red card for Johnny Heitinga, as they lost 1-0 to Spain in South Africa.

"Sadly, they played very dirty," Cruyff told Spanish newspaper El Periodico.

"This ugly, vulgar, hard, hermetic, hardly eye-catching, hardly football style... If with this they got satisfaction, fine, but they lost."

Cruyff was the symbol of 'Total Football', which earned the Dutch successive World Cup final appearances in 1974 and 1978.

Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk appeared to opt for pragmatism over style as he led the Oranje to a third final in South Africa, but the result was the same, as Andres Iniesta scored an extra-time winner for Spain.

There was a definite niggle between the two sets of players - and plenty of theatrics

But Sunday's game was also notable for Netherlands' surprisingly aggressive approach.

Cruyff, along with many others, believed Mark van Bommel and Nigel de Jong were lucky not to be sent off before half-time, Van Bommel for a tackle from behind on Iniesta and De Jong for kicking Xabi Alonso in the chest.

"They should have been down to nine immediately, then they made two [such] ugly and hard tackles that even I felt the damage," said the 63-year-old Cruyff.

"It hurts me that Holland chose an ugly path to aim for the title."

Cruyff brought his footballing philosophy to Barcelona in an eight-year spell as manager, and he is widely credited with the one-touch passing style still employed by the Catalan club, who provided the backbone of Spain's World Cup-winning squad.

However, in the Champions League semi-final last season, Pep Guardiola's side were upset by a defence-minded Inter Milan, coached by Jose Mourinho - a fact not lost on Cruyff.

"On Thursday they asked me from Holland 'Can we play like Inter? Can we stop Spain in the same way Mourinho eliminated Barca?'

"I said no, no way at all. I said no, not because I hate this style, I said no because I thought that my country wouldn't dare to and would never renounce their style. I said no because, without having great players like those of the past, the team has its own style.

"I was wrong. Of course I'm not hanging all 11 of them by the same rope, but almost. They didn't want the ball."

Cruyff also joined in the criticism of English referee Howard Webb, accusing him of being too soft with the players.

"A World Cup final deserves great refereeing and, above all, deserves a referee who dares to do everything it means to be a judge," he said.

=d> You cant argue with Cruyff!

This coming from the Dutchman who before the final said he wanted Spain to win. If he could choose he'd probably choose to be Catalan over Dutch.

No it didn't. The Dutch haven't played Total Football since 1974.

IF any team can be accused of playing boring football it's the Dutch and almost every other team that played against Spain in this WC. They forced Spain back and Spain had to pick their passes more precisley. You can only play as well as the other team lets you. The Dutch came into this game frightened and it showed in their negative tactics, this is what created a boring spectacle.

You know that you, sydcro & I have probably posted more about this final than anyone else - and we barely disagree with each other

Cruyff needs to shut the hell up. Van Marwijk got an unrated Dutch squad to the final and did what he had to do. And to say he doesn't want the dutch side to win the final is just fucking retarded. The shit he has come out with in the last few years he pisses me off more than Sepp Blatter.

As much as I like free flowing football, not every team can just go out and do it like it's second nature. One-touch football purists shit me to tears.

While I find it deplorable that he cant keep his opinion to himself for the good of his home nation, I still think his right and nobody here has the credentials to argue with him.

If every team played 'free flowing' football I think it would probably bore us to tears as well. The idea of the World Cup is that it's a clash of styles.

To be honest, If there's ANYONE in world football who knows that grinding out results beats beautiful football, it's Cruyff. Or has the senile old codger forgotten 1974 already?

Not really - while I will agree with you sometimes afro and you may have legend status on 442 - he has legend status around the world. So his opinion would have a lot more weight then yours or mine or any other forumer.

While people may listen to what he says, that doesn't make him right. Personally I think it's a load of crap that he's paying out on this dutch side and Van Marwijk that's achieved just as much as he did with the national team.

Johan Cruyff with his oppinion chose interest of football over his contry of origin.
Franz Beckenbauer said that Germany played good football and deserved to win the world cup? Platini is doing Schulz "see nothing" over Frances display v Ireland and at the WC.

With a statement like this one Cruyff has now become a Statesmen of the world football family. Legend above other football legends and maybe he did his country a big favour by telling them the thruth.

They made their first WC Final in 32 years, what favour do they need. They got further with this type of football than they did in the last 32 years with any other type of football.

Play nice football and win the WC final?
It is not in the Dutch nature to play football like this, just like the German football style did not change over the years they play and always expect them to win or come back from behind (Spain v Germany), Germans did not play dirty.

Johan Cruyff obviously wants to win in style and with his status in his country this will be a wake up call for the national team, good thing is we do not have to wait long to find out with Euro 2012 coming up.

The Dutch public didn't seem to mind when they were celebrating their loss in the final when the team came home.

The public in the end doesn't care how you win the World Cup just as long as you win.

couldn't have said it better myself.

the problem i have with Johan Cruyff is that he didnt win the world cup with total football and the dutch have still yet to do it. it took them bloody long enough to reach the wc final and they played it not to his liking. big deal. Playing like spain needs players that can play like that.

Seeing spain pass the ball is beautiful but seeing but passing it a billion times without the opposition doing anything is just as boring.

I just want goals k.
